Howde from UK

Hi There,

Names Matt, we currently campaign several miatas over here in the UK. 7 in total to be precise. Both in the Ma5da champs, and BRSCC Champs, aswell as some throttle bodies cars in a few other championships.

Have a few SC cars, and currently building an FM Ubercharger car...

Now, I am a business, and will be respecting the rules so no advertising, in fact I am here to pick your brains, with something I am sure you will all enjoy :D

Welcome to the board.
There is lots of good racing tech here, Im sure youll like it.

ttr_matt 09-22-2013 03:30 PM

is it acceptable to just drop a new post requesting help with a new build we are embarking on?

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-22-2013 03:39 PM

It depends.
Check out the stickies, and use the search feature, you may find some answers. From there if you still need help, feel free to ask.
If you make a build thread and ask stuff in there, that would be better than just asking questions. Seeing pics of what your doing gives posters incentive to contribute.

This forum has a reputation of being pretty harsh, but its mostly just quality control. We dont spoonfeed information, and we like to joke around a lot. Those two things scare off quite new users.

If you have a technical problem, ask away, there is no better place than this site.

If you want to know if the turbo your friend gave you is OK, or what we think of this Ebay turbo kit, you'll want to read up first.

ttr_matt 09-22-2013 04:13 PM

no, nothing quite like that thankfully...

We ran two cars this year, and next year we are looking to up the power.

We have to stick with 1.6 engine for the classes, we are allowed to run turbo's as the BBR 1.6T is considered a standard model - so all good there.

I'll give you a current spec - most of which needs to go in the bin.

1.6 - Car weights 815kg empty.

11:1 Comp Ratio
Custom long duration cams, not a massive lift (didnt want peaky power)
Jenvey throttle bodies, with ITG panel filter and Reverie carbon airbox
Racing beat full race system inc header, wrapped
Adjustable cam pulleys
DTA S60 Pro ECU with twin map and pit lane speed limiter - 330cc Weber Injectors, big fuel pump, VFPR.
Coolant reroute kit
949 twin plate clutch kit
MazdaSpeed clutched diff
PST Carbon Driveshaft
Full Race Technology Logging, Dash and CAN interface
ATL Drybreak Fuelling (think Nascar)

I am sure there are more bits - we have two identical cars of that spec making 173 and 175bhp respectively.

So...

Next year - reliabilty is key.

250bhp at the wheels - sticking with 1.6.

Yes we could go to more power - but we just simply dont need to, we are also changing all the panels we can for carbon.

So I thought I'd ask the question here, as I am sure you are all more experience with the turbo side of things.

Guessing we'll start with a different engine, and keep this short one for NA replacement in the other race cars, or for switching back into this one for different events.

So - ground up rebuild, thinking rods and pistons should do it for this small power, change injectors, I'll check the cam spec, but they **may** be ok for a turbo app, cam pulleys, clutch, FPR etc will all swap over. I'll keep the exhaust (its big enough) and just fab a new decat to mate the new downpipe to the rest of the system...

So there you go - a brief...

Is it worth me starting a build thread??

Can you run E85? Do you have it there in the UK? You could run that 11:1 bottom end on E85.

ttr_matt 09-22-2013 04:50 PM

sadly no, pump fuel only, so max 99 RON

sixshooter 09-22-2013 09:34 PM

I would go with low compression forged pistons, forged rods, a fabricated ramhorn exhaust manifold, a Borg Warner EFR turbo, and a 3 inch exhaust.

Braineack 09-23-2013 06:26 AM

Welcome to the site ttr_matt, thanks for joining up!

ttr_matt 09-23-2013 03:38 PM

So far - looking like the shopping list is including:

Wiseco -13cc pistons
Eagle H beam rods

sixshooter 09-23-2013 04:54 PM

The rods are available on ebay for cheap, or you can get them from 949Racing with the good ARP 2000 bolts and other upgrades for $359.

ttr_matt 09-23-2013 05:14 PM

Good to know, have someone in NYC that can order for me...

ttr_matt 09-30-2013 02:54 PM

So Far -

Wiseco pistons ordered.
Eagle H Beam rods ordered.

Now for manifold.

See if Abe @ ARTech will ship to the UK.

Welcome to the site

oooh they are nice...

I'll need to suss what turbo first I am guessing...

ttr_matt 10-02-2013 08:02 AM

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the following...

Given that we want reliability, and need 250bhp, with an upper limit of 300bhp.
We will intercool the setup
We need to source a manifold / downpipe
We need to source a Garrett turbo
We wont be going external WG

Here is the biggy - we'd rather map and build for torque - we are not after huge power figures here, this is for a race car, so we dont want a peaky power delivery, as long as we have good power, and a wallop of torque between 3700 and 6800 rpm, we'll be laughing.

So, any thoughts and suggestions... all appreciated of course. Happy to get stuff from the states :D

sixshooter 10-02-2013 08:11 AM

EFR if that's in the budget. Or a gt2560r.

ttr_matt 10-02-2013 08:31 AM

GT2560R it is then - we have to use garrett. Just need to find all the associated parts (inlets outlets etc etc) full set of hard lines...

I wonder if FM will sell a kit without the turbo and IC...

EO2K 10-02-2013 11:27 AM

FM will sell you anything you want, just give them a call. Check out the FMII "No Electronics" kit and have them delete the parts you don't want/need.
