Default Total rookie buys Supermiata

Hey all,

My name is CJ and I have a Miata problem. Say hello to my newly acquired Miata, 10AE #1126, the brainchild of @EErockMiata (see build thread here https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...d-80068/page4/):

TLDR: it's a Supermiata S2 car with a 6 speed and no cage.

I come from the Mazdaspeed 3/6 platform and actually bought my first Miata, like many in that community, as a fun daily driver while the Mazdaspeed is under the knife. Driving my Miata around on local backgrounds, I found myself enjoying the raw, nimble, and analog feel of my trusty daily more than I enjoyed the power of my fully built PTE6266 Mazdaspeed3 (can talk about this build ad nauseam with anyone interested). Living around ~20min away from Summit Point Motorsports Park, I began to plan out how I might prepare my NB2 to go to the occasional track day, but unfortunately found significant frame rail rust shortly thereafter and deemed it not worth the effort. So naturally, I had to have this car when I saw it for sale.

10AE with the old NB2 daily

Mazdaspeed needs more intercooler

Initial plans: I have already polished up the tune, addressed some weird electrical gremlins, and made a 949 style coldside intake (for the scene points). This winter I will be refreshing everything -- new gaskets, hardware, sending the coilovers off for a rebuild, etc. It will also be getting frame rail braces and perhaps the butterfly, as one of the frame rails is pretty dinged up and it's bothering me. This car will see HPDE days and maybe TT stuff eventually, but I have a lot of learning to do beforehand. Hoping I can keep myself from changing too much because my skill level is far beneath this car's potential as it sits, but I keep getting bad ideas about a head shave, E85, and maybe ITB's...

I'll eventually start a build thread tracking my HPDE days and other driving events, and my eventual continued development of this car. Hoping to take some lap records soon, but seat time first:

I think I received more point-bys than I gave this day, a win in my book

Thanks for checking out my thread,

CJ

very very relieved to see my old flame in the hands of some one that will love it. It was a LOT of car for the gentlemen you bought it from. I tried to sorta warn him that if he wasn't the type that wasn't going to spin his own wrenches, that my car was maybe not the best choice. Interesting to hear about electrical grelmins, we should get on the phone and talk about some of the things that were done to the car to give some context. About the frame rail... that one comes with a story. My dad is a vette guy, asked him to get the car off the jack stands at an event... assumed he would make good life choices when taking the car off the jacks... I was wrong. As bummed as you are about it, I was crushed. the car ended up in my hands with immaculate frame rails, I made it through countless track days and offs with no issues... Took my dad about 15 seconds to toast all of that. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS DAD!

Funny that you're an MS3 owner. For much of this cars life, it shared a garage with my wife's 2010 ms3 that was a DD and also autoX car. Interestingly enough, that car was sold to the owner of blackbird fabworx and he had it until recently.

Let's get on the phone and shoot the ****. I'd love to hear where you're at with the car, what questions you have and what your plan are.

Hey man! Happy to see you're still doing the forum thing, and sorry I didn't see your response earlier.

Regarding the frame rail story -- that's totally tragic, but to be fair I could see a Corvette guy making that mistake. I think it's a dad thing to damage their son's cars anyhow; I could show you a good handful of blemishes, dings, and broken bolts from my old man on the MS3. Countless times he's ripped the side skirts off pulling out of the garage lol.

I'd love to get on the phone and chat -- I can shoot you another email with my number if you want and we can arrange from there. I've got a few questions and a handful of (probably bad/unnecessary) ideas for further development that could use some feedback.

Welcome! I went the opposite route and bought a Speed3 for a daily alongside my less daily friendly Miata. Both cars compliment each other well I feel!
