So this is my first post on MiataTurbo, which is fitting because last night I ordered a Shanghai-S kit for my 99. So I'm pretty stoked to finally have a Turbocharged Miata, haha.

Ive had my 99 for about 3 years now, and have yet to d any serious modifications to it, just exhaust, intake, some weight reduction, and appearance mods. oh, and up until very recently I was running 100-shot Direct port nitrous, but thats mostly sold now to fund the turbo XD

Here's so pics for those that are interested:

Awesome - welcome! I'll be curious to see how your install goes with the Shanghai kit and how you like it once it is up and running.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 05-29-2009 04:10 PM

Yah, I got the very basic kit with the addition of a bypass valve, a wideband bung, and the FMU system.
I was considering using a Vortec FMU with an inline fuel pump, and essentially making a knock-off version of the BEGi fuel system, but in the end I decided I wanted the fully adjustable FMU.
Im hoping I can run 5-6 PSI non-intercooled on 93 octane wthout retarding the ignition. If it cant be done then Ill figure out an intercooler and take it to 8, then maybe even higher with boost-timing retard.

sixshooter 05-29-2009 04:18 PM

I'm pretty sure you will need some retard at six elbows with or without the intercooler.

Agree - bipes, mds or the like to pull timing. Used ones pop up all the time and are reasonably priced.

Money saved there can go towards braided stainless lines.

my 2 cents

OP - nice car and I like the seats.

I was under the impression that I could get away with 5-6psi, but maybe Im wrong.
I never had any detonation with a 100 shot of nitrous on the stock timing.

Also, what boost retard units can be used with my 99? I know bipes and the MSD are for 90-97 because they work with the normal optical CAS, while the 99 has that goofy hall sensor.
I dont like the idea of the adjustable crank trigger wheel because then out of boost power suffers dramatically.

And it begins...

I was there, too.

What if I...

Can't I...

Just buy an Adaptronic and you are golden for whatever you want to throw at it.

BTW, love the car, love the seats.

cjernigan 05-30-2009 12:51 AM

+1 for adaptronic. Do it once, do it right.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 05-30-2009 12:51 AM

Yah, that is another grand I don't wanna spend, I suppose if I really have to I'll run an adjustable trigger wheel
:/

cjernigan 05-30-2009 12:59 AM

what does the shanghai come with for fuel management?

tyson87 05-30-2009 09:27 AM

where in FL are u at?

The BEGi "Fuel system", which consists of a the adjustable RRFPR and the Peidburg fuel pump.

So just to clarify, I absolutly have to retard the stock 99 ignition timing with this kit, non-intercooled, on 93 octane, at 5 psi?

tyson87 05-30-2009 09:35 PM

Did you read the instructions. I think it outlines everything for you.

Ah, you are correct.
It appears that it may or may not need the base timing retarded, he basically says to go and drive it on stock timing and listen for knock, and if there is any knock, retard the ignition by 2 degrees.

I guess Ill have to get me an adjustable timing wheel.

Just get a Megasquirt2 and you are golden for whatever you want to throw at it.

After investing the other $$$ you already have, don't cut corners on your engine management just so you can post thrown rod pics later...

BTW - Nice car...

Yah, Im looking at MS-II now. Most of the information I'm finding is either for NA's or its MS-I on an NB, so its all a bit confusing.

Its the compressor housing off of a K03 from a 1.8L VW

The fundamentals are the same.

However, https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t35601/

FYI- you don't have to go full-tilt-boogie on a standalone (thus requiring alternator control and such.) If you want, you can do a parallel install, with the MS driving only the injectors and ignition, while the stock ECU runs the idle, alternator, VICS, etc.

Ah okay, So essentially I would be tapping the MS into all the sensors I need and having it control only fuel and spark.

What makes it even better is I already have a Boomslang Patch harness, and I have a friend who makes a profession of making custom harnesses and and tuning, so hopefully we can make it work.
XD

i has no moneys

well I have more money to spend, but Im assuming that Ill run into a few things here and there, plus I gonna want to run an intercooler prretty soon.

Im thinking eventually Im going to get a Garrett gt2860rs or a gt2871r, and some sort of serious ECU... and a clutch...
