Hey everyone, im new to every aspect of the miata and the forum thing. i got my hands on a balck 1993 LE and im looking into the turbo route. i have heard some great things about this forum so i thought i would trust you guys to abuse and harass me about being a newb.

my goal is around 200whp, and from what i have been reading it sounds like it will be easier then i thought. right now im debating between getting a greddy or a garrett but have been scared to ask peoples opinions in fear of getting massacred. it sounds like the garrett GT2554h is the better turbo with more potential but that also comes with a larger price tag. is it worth spending the money? or will the greddy be adequate?

i know this is the meet and greet but i figured i would throw that out there. i live in california, in the bay area. im just doing my research and trying to figure out whats the best route to take right now, so it will be a while before it becomes a turbo.

Welcome. It sure looks like you have a lot of reading in front of you. Read braineack's sticky on DIY. You'll find plenty of answers there.

About whether to go the Greddy or a Garrett; that just shows you haven't read enough! (Greddy is a kit and Garrett is a turbo ). I'm going to assume you mean Greddy or a Begi kit. If that's the case; it's a no brainer: the answer would be a Begi S kit. The Greddy had a reputation for a weak manifold. You don't want to be constantly fixing the mani.

Since you're in CA, I assume that CARB matters.

The Greddy kit has a CARB number, though the P/N on the sticker has been incorrect for years. It also comes with the world's worst FPR.

Bell's kits also have CARB certification, though I'm not sure if the -S model qualifies. I believe it may if you order it with the full "BEGi Fuel System" (which adds an aux fuel pump) but be sure to call them and check first.

I used to have a 93 LE black with red interior. I always wanted to add a super or turbocharger to it but never did. I sold it to help pay for the Mazdaspeed mx5 turbo I now have.

thank you, and you were right, i do have a lot to learn. ive seen pictures of the greddy manifold cracking but if i cut the manifold to allow for flex and expansion from the heat does it still crack?

Thank you for the advice. ill look into it, but im leaning a bit towards the greddy kit because of the price difference, and it doesn't seem like it would be overly difficult to switch the FPR that comes with the kit to a BEGI. that would at least solve the worlds worst FPR problem.

and another NEWB question.. where is the best place to make a post about trying to meet people in my area that have a turbo miata? i would like to see a few setups and if possilbe get a ride to understand a bit more about what im getting myself into.

haha ill just make sure to do my research so that after i make the lame post ill sound like i know what im talking about when i have to defend it, but ive made the decision to hold off on boosting my car for a couple months. so ill be reading more then posting

So you're doing a kit just like me. My old sig used to say no turbo until 2011, but check the for sale forums and a badass deal will come up. My set-up comes today!

thanks for the advice. ill def. keep an eye out, but i want to build my set up piece by piece so that i understand how it works a little better. i think that if i bought everything and installed it at once i would not know where to look if something happened. by starting with the basic kit and slowly adding other parts to increase the power will give me a better understanding of how my setup works, and what each part does. reading is a great tool to help but actually doing and experiencing it has no substitute.

Welcome to the forums! I have a 93 LE with the greddy kit and it works fine, although, ive replaced everything except the turbo and the manifold. TBH the greddy kit does its job. But im not sure if you have heard this but... Boost is ADDICTIVE. If i were you the Begi-s kit is around 1800$ and the greddy kit is 1500$. For 300$ you get a faster spooling turbo, More efficient downpipe (more power than the greddy), Pretty much bullet proof manifold (although i have seen some crack), and one of the most friendly customer service staff. You will get approx 10 more HP (very approximate measures) than the greddy. Keep in mind that that is what BEGI dynos with like 5psi. Do yourself a favor and ditch the greddy idea and go with the GT2560. The 2554 is a great turbo but if i was to redo my setup (which i might) i would go with the 2560 because it has great spooling and more power potential. Read up youll be a subscriber in no time
