It's not about lap times. You want to install ABS, that won't be cheap. The 5 speed is not as strong. And the brakes are smaller on the NB8A.
Also the NB8B looks better.

If your happy to keep it, then that's fine. Just pointing things out so you know.

A good friend of mine bought an NB8A after I told him to buy an NB8B. He sold it less than a year later and bought an NB8B after he realised it was false economy.

Alright, progress.

Meet Taylor.

Installed Tein Flex Z's.

Still settling them and working out what ride height i want to sit on. I have a 600m dirt driveway so she needs to have fairly decent clearance.
Sitting on 7/7 setting at the moment which feels perfect. Tried it a bit higher but have not had the time to try any lower (Except factory 1/1 stiffness)

Picked up a used TD04. Unfortunately they are not as cheap as the ones in the state. Wreckers had them for $250 however i found one with a few missing copper shims and wastegate hose for $140 - 93k km. (~60k miles?)

Currently looking at buying this intercooler... thoughts, fitment issues? EDIT: or this?
Anywho next step is install the intercooler and plan routes while i work on fabbing my own manifold / DP / Exhaust. If i **** it up i know someone who will fix it for fun.
Will fit in a cam mod to 14d when i can find a decent priced cam light around me.

Completely happy with my NB8A purchase. Love the 5 speed.

Ebay Intercooler arrived - turns out to be CX racing. Will be installing it this weekend hopefully. Came with 2 random metal rectangles that i assume are brackets..... except they dont fit the screw holes... Will probably fab my own.

Been a lousy 3 weeks.

Installed the IC. Simple + no issues. Its sitting at the front with inlets taped.

Rev's ECU arrived. Installed with no issues into the passenger footwell (Australian ECU location).
Now the problems started! Had issues where the car wouldn't start at hot temps. Ended up being both coils turning off when hot, or one triggering the other to shutdown as well.

This ended up being a brilliantly tuned idle with every other fuel cell being rubbish. As i had to be towed home whenever i left the driveway.

Anywho. Installed cops as per below. Roofing screws are the perfect distance to hold down the aluminum angle.

Took 2 weeks to receive some COPs + pigtails from USA. Aust 2nd hand Denso's were $45 each at the local wreckers... I bought 4 for $22USD.

Car drove brillantly. Was up around 7000rpm hitting the high cells in and tick tick tick. Car was missing triggers and died to a halt. Considering i was out of phone reception in the middle of nowhere - luckily a pint of water on the CAS got her going again.

Installed the new CAS and shes running well again.

Have a CLT and IAT to install next. Other than that ill be tuning until i route the cold air intercooler in and build a manifold.

Fuels dialed in for now on 98... (93 USA?) - she drives great.
Based on Braineack's timings and target afr's.
No knocks across the whole rpm range.

Having a ton of fun with it naturally aspirated.
Ordered some 15x9 advanti storms.
Found some 316 seamless 2" balustrade in the work shed. So it was go time.

Trimmed the headlight plastic and went all in the old girl.
Should be able to fit a straight length of 2" stainless from the intercooler to the turbo.

Also worked on my cold side intake today. Bits of pie with shitty welding.

Evening.
Turbo kitty is getting closer!

Had the manifold gasket and td04 gaskets laser cut. Ended up with 3 slightly different td04, 3 hole flanges through machine malfunctions. All are usable... That's a bonus!
Bought the weld els, 6m length of 3" stainless pipe. What nots and more stuff.

After a long days work I spent an hour tonight in the shed and turned 4 beers and 3 x 4" cutting discs into:

Oil pan drilled, I went with front corner due to clearance on Ac unit.
Turbo oil and water lines are in. Running off sandwich plate and standard water locations.

Hotside intake tubing complete - and ran out of welding wire finishing the droppipe.
O2 sensor is between transmission and chassis rails at bottom of droppipe.

Should be drivable tonight hopefully. Fingers crossed.

And we have lift off! Taylor is officially Swift.

Works like a charm, due to wet weather and tuning fuel I only hit 4k last night at 48% throttle but she is definitely hauling ***.
At 4k I was at 5.8psi. This will be fiddled with later when my ev14 640cc injectors show up.

Otherwise I'm extremely happy that she all works well.

Everything from turbo forwards is working as desired. After that she howls like a demon and needs some TLC. But that stuffs not as important.

On the list:

- Solder the IAT wires
- Install GM water sensor
- Sand the flanges flat - DP mainly
- Leak test DP and Re-weld leaks
- Build 3" exhaust. Flex pipe and cat are ready for pickup at post
- Install 640cc ev14
- Storm 15x9 when they arrive
- New number plates
- Heatshields
- Intercooler cowling
- Install new 2 row intercooler when it arrives
- Weld up catch can (2" tube in a 3")
- Waste gate bracket
- Fix down COPS with real bolts

Very happy with how clean the install was and how the engine bay turned out.

So i came to a conclusion. Straight through 3" pipe is way to loud for daily driving. I was nearly convinced i had a few leaks + the burble and drone were intolerable in gears 1-4.
I was unsure of what it would be like so i only built it to the diff. This was a great decision.

In a moment of beer fueled geniousnessness i decided to weld the 2" stock muffler flange to the 3" exhaust, then whack on the stock muffler.
With the roof down, music on lightly. wind in your hair.... The engine is nearly dead silent at 7000 revs. It flutters quite loud, but the actual exhaust sound is non-existent. Its quieter than stock at all rev ranges. And the pod filter roar is gone. Its very strange to have a tonne of power with no sound.

Have not really noticed a performance hit. Kind of loving it as a sleeper build.

Will throw some pictures up later when i take a few photos.

Alrighty.

Taylor is still running brilliantly. However the clutch has started slipping around 5000/6000 rpm in first at 7.2psi. So that's next on the list.
Installed a new boost gauge while 700km interstate. So at 7am and sleepy I was under the dash and managed to cut the innovate O2 sensor harness instead of the ecu vacuum line. ****.
30 minutes with a soldering iron and she's good to go. All values displaying correctly etc.

610 ev14 injectors installed. I actually didn't expect them to make this much difference to the idle etc. Dead times and requires fuel set. Still need to tune fuel. They seem to need 3-4 less fuel per resolution on the table so that's easy enough.

Nearly lost a plate in the middle. Of no where. So many potholes.

And the exhaust I welded up a blue moon or two ago.
Pretty much 3 inch from **** to *** before it transitions into 2.5 muffler after diff. 3" x 8" flex with hi flow 200 cell cat - essentially a magnaflow copy at half the price. (magnaflow I ordered was sold out)

As some of you know I nuked my 1st cylinder.
https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...g-knock-89859/

New vvt upgrade. 128k (km) with no history.
Car looked scrappy. Engine looks scrappy.
Filthy. ******* filthy.

Its like someone has coated the engine in petrol and threw a match on it.
But wreckers guaranteed a 193 compression across all 4.

Inside cam cover was cleaner than my 135k (km) engine that's been garaged.

Let get back to filthy. Black down one side. Upon tear down it seems the black soft flexible plastic parts have disintegrated.
The knock sensor that's a plug sealed with goop? It's now exposed. Good disintegrated. Leaking from either this. Or the banjo below it.

Only other issue is about 1mm solid carbon around edges of cylinders, over the pistons and all the valves....

So sugar soap and a toothbrush...

Esky is sugar soap + head...

Tomorrow I'm dropping the block in.

Other than that it's business as usual.
Throwing in an exedy HD organic clutch that will be modified by one of Australia's leading clutch builders. Should have extra clamping force and able to handle 240 ponies in heat.

Will also do a complete gasket job as this disintegrated plastic **** doesn't inspire confidence.

Motors coming along.
Today I received a cometic hg, so she's nearly assembled... Until I realised I need to make the block off plate for the coolant reroute. Unfortunately my tools are onsite.

Anywho that will be tomorrow's project then final assembly can commence.

Picked up a 1000kg exedy pressure plate with a HD organic clutch. Should be fine for 240hp.

Colant reroute is interesting. Using the unused screw slot on rear of head for the water temp. Plugged the stock front neck on the rear with no spacer. And on the left side of where the neck joins the motor is a decent 30x30 mm area.

Question : any reason I cant tap a 14mm barb into this location? Why not? It looks feasible...

Apart from that she's clean as a button and ready to be manhandled into position.

I threw the head on with intakes / exhaust header / coolant pipes but phone kept crashing. Will throw up more tomorrow.

Essentially I need to:
1. Work out heater reroute. Why can't I drill hole mentioned above? Then a 12mm to 15mm pipe xfer
2. Front cover plate

Then it's go time.
