My Turbo Project In Progress

Hello Miataturbo people,
This is my very first post I have made on the internet so forgive me for any noobish stuff. Okay, This is my current project in progress and it is obvious what I am creating. This is a 1.8 mk1 engine with a homemade manifold and with Garrett t28 ball bearing attached to it. I have also machined my cam cover to give me exposed cam gear. I will be creating a custom inlet manifold over the next few weeks. More posts to come. Why keep the power steering? |
Yea.. It looks a bit extreme! I will be running a 3" pipe from turbo back, I did not want to use a tight 90 degree bend at the turbo so i decided to go down the tiltly turbo route.
I work on classic and vintage vehicles with no power steering, and this will be a daily driver so i want a small bit of comfort of power steering while driving.. |
I'm all for keeping power steering.
...but that angle looks a bit extreme. hope you don't toast the turbo or the rear seal like that |
Yea, me too, this is a bit of an experiment... the oil will be under pressure so it 'should' be fine. I will soon find out when I run the engine.

Garrett has a .pdf floating around that specifically list turbo angles(? not quite sure how to word that) and what the limits are for the CHRA to allow proper oil flow/draining. IIRC they want you to have a slight tilt, but it's not necessary for longevity. No idea about your tilt, though.
Can't wait to see the downpipe and dump tube routing. |

Yea, I remember finding and reading that piece! I did follow it, but i may have added a couple more degrees and then with welding the manifold up the flange moved a little bit more... if it doesn't work and blows the turbo I will make up a flange to turbo tapered spacer that will level out the turbo, there is always a fix .... I will keep you posted, I can be the test dummy! I will hopefully have the engine up and running in June-July time.

Welcome. Nice attention to detail. Now start working on a support to hold up and stabilize the turbo.
