n00b Intro and Brief Build Plan
 

Hello best website in the world! My name is Ryan and I am from the south eastern Michigan area. I am a student currently studying for a masters of science in medical dosimetry through the University of Wisconsin.

I've had my miata for about three years now and have decided to pull the trigger on boosting it (hopefully the right way). The miata is a 1990 with 67k miles on it and completely stock. It was a Friday the 13th purchase, so the car has been dubbed with the name "Lucky." While I know its not the ideal car to turbo, I just love the thing too much to buy a later gen miata. I also ended up getting a steal on a nice matching hardtop for $200 as well (best day ever).

If the compression and leak tests go well, my current power goal is 230-250hp and the build will consist of:

First installing and learning how to use a MSPNP
Rx-7 or Rx-8 Injectors
Stage 3 clutch kit
NA8 Rear Differential
Coolant Reroute
FM's DIY kit (Manifold, downpipe, oil lines, and water lines ect).
A GT2560R Turbo
Ebay Intercooler and piping

Overall plan looks really good. Definitely RX8 over RX7 injectors, they'd be worth the couple extra bucks. Not sure what a Stage 3 clutch kit is, but I have a FM Level 1 Happy Meal and love it.

Welcome! Have you considered swapping in a 1.8? Used motors can be had for pretty cheap and you're taking things apart to install the clutch anyway and messing with the wiring for MSPNP, just do eeeeeeiiit!

What I've read indicates your HP goals will be too much for the RX8 injectors, go with the flow force ones from TSE like DNMakinson said. What are you doing for exhaust DP back? Are you planning to run a stock radiator (and caps aren't brown are they?!?) I guess you might be fine on the street with stock radiator and reroute I wouldn't count on it though. You need to think about gauges and a wideband o2 sensor. What about a BOV? Boost control?

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely pay a little extra and get those instead.

I have considered swapping in a 1.8 many times... I might just do eeeeeiiit haha, but I almost feel like I would be better off buying a 94+ miata instead as it would already have the 1.8, stronger dif, bigger brakes, and more bracing ect. If I did install one, I would probably go about it by buying a salvage miata and taking off the rear end and 1.8 motor. I would just part out the rest to make some extra $.

I am planning on getting the forceflows now. I haven't really gotten to the specific exhaust specs yet (obviously I'll something less restrictive than stock). I forgot to mention that I plan on getting a Mishimoto radiator. I'll probably go with the FM boost control. What do you suggest for a wideband O2 sensor, guauges, and BOV?

You can DIY or ebay a manual boost controller for pretty cheap if you want to save a little there. I think innovate wideband is the common choice. For gauages you want at least oil pressure and people usually run boost/vac gauge as well. It seems many people use Innovate MTX or LC-2 or an AEM UEGO wideband (I have UEGO). I'm not really sure about BOV. I have one from silicone intakes (it was a part of the used turbo kit I bought) and I still haven't installed my turbo so I can't really comment on how good it is!

Those are actually some of the things that I know the least about since they came with my car/kit so I didn't really research. I was just looking through my parts list and noting things that you didn't mention and need to consider.

ARTech and Absurdflow do some beautiful things with exhaust, check them out if you haven't.

Do you plan to track your car at all? Or just street/AutoX? A lot more to consider if you want reliability on the track.
