Default New MX-5 owner from Sydney Australia

Hello all, my name is Alexander and I just bought a Japanese imported 1990 mx5 with 70,000kms (40,000 odd miles) on its rebuilt 1.8 flyin miata converted engine

I have never owned a MX-5 but after driving my friends one i was very impressed with how raw they were handling wise

heres a list of the modifications it came with (mostly copied from the add)

-NB LSD
-Rx7 AFM
-wrapped Extractors & 2.25” exhaust
-Magnecor Leads
-Pod filter & custom intake
-Mazda Competition Mounts
-949 Racing Twin Plate Clutch & Flywheel (weighing HALF original setup; increased performance & fast shifting. All GB & engine Seals replaced when this was done)
-949 SS Clutch line
-M-Tuned Coolant Reroute
-Brown Davis Roll Bar
-NB brakes
-XXR mags
-Whiteline front brace
-uprated swaybars & poly bushes
-G4 adjustable Coilovers
-OMP wheel
-Front & Rear chassis braces
-EBC Yellowstuff Brake Pads
-Goodridge SS Brake Lines

Let me know what you think?

it drives soo well so i dont feel like i need to modify it anymore but feel free to recommend any i should get.

thanks for looking at this thread and id appreciate it if anyone can link me a thread they found really usefull for maintenance ( i tried searching maintenance in the search bar then engine oil but i got unrelated results)

appologies in advance if i have made a typical new guy mistake and posted this where i shouldn't have, i'm still new to forums.

Welcome to the forum, Alexander. It sounds like you found a car with most of the smaller upgrades done to it. All you need now is an ECU and you'll probably be ready for a turbo.

FYI - The Fortune 500 Gen 4 adjustable coilovers have spring rates that should be 336/252 (6kg/4.5kg) according to my research.

thanks guys,

I dont know the exact model of the coil overs but i will be servicing it this weekend and giving it a good clean so i will be able to let u know

I dont think im going to go down the turbo path yet because i like using this car as a daily driver. Its probably sacrilegious to say something like that in this forum but to register a car thats slightly modified in New South Whales Australia is a nightmare, let alone insurance.

A mate told me that a good investment on these cars is a quad throttle body kit. Has anyone done this to their mx-5 and recommend it?

i looked on the internet and they are a very expensive mod (not sure how much the ECU for it will cost but i dont know if its worth the upgrade)

Do more reading. On this forum people won't tolerate questions that could be answered with 5 mins on Google. don't buy quads unless you want to be booked just as bad as a turbo but make much less power and spend more money. Fellow new south Welshman here, Newcastle.

yeh i figured people dont like questions that they you can easily find on google but most search results showed up with honda threads like this one

Individual throttle bodies are they worth it and what kind of hp gain do they add

i was wondering if anyone had a different experience with an mx-5 but yeh cheers for clearing that up!

Quad throttle bodies are not a good return on investment at all- $/HP. They will require a new ECU and will be more difficult to tune than a single TB. Quad TBs will also destroy your midrange and low end torque in exchange for a small high RPM gain. It is a lot of money for 10-20hp at the expense of 10-20hp in the heart of your operating range for a daily driver.

With a turbo you could keep the bottom end torque but add 100hp+ up top for similar expense. That is why it is so often recommended. But I understand the governmental encroachment on personal freedom problem.
