new and building a monster

Hey all
Decided to buy a Miata to autocross. Been running an AWD laser for several years and want to go low and light.
Just bought a 91 w/ a Greddy but have not picked it up yet. It will never be licensed. It will be a racecar only.

Here is the goal:

The goal is 1700lbs and 226hp for a ratio of 7.5lbs/hp. It will be an xp car on 15x10s. It will not have an interior to speak of - no dash, carpet, etc. A lexan windshield. No mirrors, lights, etc. Downpipe and motorcycle muffler. Just skins for the hood, trunk, and doors. Some of the wiring will get removed. And that's all before I start really looking for the small stuff.
By the way, any leads on light wheels? I know of Real, Bogart, and Keizer. 949 only makes 9" wide and I need 10s. I was hoping to find something a little less pricey than the three brands mentioned above.

Mike

read the noob faq.....add location to profile...update sig.....

your dream of having a "monster" is great, but I think a better approach would be to have lurked and read up on the many informative threads here. Jumping in claiming to build a monster and asking where to buy wheels will not get you taken seriously, at least by me anyways. Everyone wants to build a monster/fast car...its how you go about doing it that matters.

and finally, welcome

KPLAFIN 09-27-2008 06:31 PM

/\ what he said....

CCW might be worth calling about some wheels. PM "dans creations" here for pricing info/details on ordering.

patsmx5 09-27-2008 06:37 PM

SEARCH Read faqs and stickys.

949 has made a batch of 10" wide wheels before.

omaharam 09-27-2008 06:39 PM

Well gee. Thanks for the warm welcome.

1. I put in a location
2. I did not fill out a sig because the car isn't even in my possession yet.
3. I see no sticky for a Noob FAQ
4. It's not a "dream". I'm pretty sure I'm capable considering the vehicles I've built over the years. It WILL be a reality.
5. Let's see. I mentioned 4 places to buy wheels and only asked if anyone knew of a source I am unaware of. I guess it's not acceptable to ask questions on this forum even after doing a search for wheels.

Again, thanks for the warm welcome.:jerkit:

Either look around at some of the other intro posts and newb threads or just take my word for it, you got a very warm welcome compared to what people normally get. There haven't even been any ban threats yet for crying out loud!!

patsmx5 09-27-2008 06:49 PM

I've had nothing but poor communication with 949. I PM him, he says check the website it will answer my question. Doesn't even answer my question. So I look on the site and don't find the answer, again. So I PM him and he doesn't respond.

Yeah we don't hold hands around here. Your grammar is ok, that's a plus. You didn't ask a bunch of stupid questions, that's a plus.

Go to the main page. It list all the different forums. There's one for DIY turbo stuff, prefabed stuff, miata in general, engine management, and several others. Click each one and at the top there will be stickies. Read through them. That will keep you busy for a while. I will stop, I'm not the newb police.

Where's Samnavy when you need him?

Toddcod 09-28-2008 11:12 AM

That's weird, I bought my MSPNP from him and he gave me great service. He even gave me some phone numbers to call to help with a project I had.

Welcome to the forum.

They are refering to the DIY all in one post under the DIY section.

Anyway. You shouldn't have any problem getting 226hp with management. But I don't know much about hacking up the interior for weight.

Good luck.

airbrush1 09-28-2008 03:58 PM

I had an AWD turbo laser for about a year, fun car before I melted the motor (literally welded part of the piston to the head).

How bout a mods list on the laser and some pics?

Thanks

I know a 91 that is down to 1900lbs and I can see an easy 100lbs that can be removed and after that I'll have to get down to the nitty gritty to get to my 1700lb goal.

slutz4 09-28-2008 04:45 PM

good luck getting the car to 1700 lbs, it wont be easy

patsmx5 09-28-2008 04:53 PM

Within reason, it's easier to add power to get to your goal. Sure, you might be able to get to 1700 if you remove enough, but it would be easier to get to say 1900 and then add some boost. But if you get to 1700 go for it. You know there's a lightweight miata forum, right? Might wanna check it out. That laser looks crazy.

airbrush1 09-28-2008 07:14 PM

holy wheel fitment batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my mods list was much shorter on my laser. Big16g, supra sidemount, hard IC piping, 3" exhaust, S-AFC, etc...

18psi 09-29-2008 01:16 AM

laser does look prety badass.....Im curious what you will possibly be removing to get to 1700, cause holy shit thats light

kotomile 09-29-2008 09:17 AM

Is RMCELWEE's car still for sale? 'Cause this build sounds exactly like what he has/had.

Welcome!

I think they didn't get enough deposits for the 10" wheels.

paul 09-29-2008 01:57 PM

6.8 lbs/hp here.

Preluding 09-29-2008 02:21 PM

that laser looks badass.... must be a blast to tear around in!

Mmm, misinformation.

Nice to see a DSM'er taking corners.

Welcome.

Welcome!

I emailed back and forth with him. I was seriously considering buying that car, it's just too far from me. I'm filling with diesel right now on my way home from picking up the Miata.

Just from pictures, I can see another 100lbs that can come out of his car which is why I know I can get to 1800lbs but put a goal of 1700. 1700 may require some fabing of a few parts and take some time, but it should be down to 1800 pretty darn quick.

Hey John
Not FTD anymore. Matt and John in John's miata have been destroying us. Hence, the new build.

I flew to florida to get my second turbo Miata. I got buddy passes and drove it back. 18hr drive. Whew.

Good luck with the new build.

Welcome.

I could swear he made a batch of 10's. I read about it on m.net. The V8 guys were drooling.

944obscene 09-30-2008 02:03 AM

Guess I'm doing pretty good then, since my greet thread got pretty much no attention vs. people waving their n00b sticks at me. But I know a couple people on this board, and (I think) I gave a good bit of knowledge on m-net that a few others saw. So people know I'm not brainless.

Nice to see a Mitsu guy looking for something besides big power. Unless you count the 5 liters of Ford power (if you want to call it that. Just teasing.) that you want to dump in the front.

paul 09-30-2008 07:19 AM

Did I miss where he said he wanted to drop a 5.0 in it? By monster I think he just means in terms of power:weight, not being scary that it could break down at any time.

Surely not, as he clearly stated that. And to which I addressed in my joking reference to the 5liters of Ford power.

No dissagreement.

omaharam 09-30-2008 07:04 PM

Got a question for you guys. I've been doing some reading and have looked for answers to some of my questions. Here is one I haven't found.

Ok
NA is a 90-97
NB is a 99-05
NC is a 06 to current

Right so far?

What is a BP?

Right. And BP is the designation for the type of engine our miata has. Kinda like Honda has D series, B series, K, H, etc. We have BP's.

944obscene 10-01-2008 01:49 AM

I thought the the 1.6 NA's used like a B6. Or B6e. Still learning all the engine lingo.

omaharam 10-01-2008 08:29 AM

There's all kinds of lingo I haven't figured out yet and some other questions as well. I've been reading posts for hours. Supposedly all the answers to my questions exist somewhere and I should find the answers rather than ask so I don't get flamed again. Oh well, back to reading.

944obscene 10-01-2008 12:00 PM

Yeah. I'm gonna have to look around and get familiar with the Miata motor variants. This would be so much easier if we were dealing with Toyota motors. Now there's a language I can speak. ge, gze, 4a, 3s, 5s, 1uz, fe etc.

There you go.

jayc72 10-01-2008 01:58 PM

1700 is a lofty goal I think. You'll be removing at least 400lbs + what you are adding in terms of turbo gear and rollbar. I'd say you are looking at 500lbs to reach your goal of 1700.

Also the greddy turbo isn't what you want for an autocross car. I found the power to come on late and far too suddenly. A GT2560 or GT2554R should be what you are looking at.

Good luck, if you get it there it'll be stupid to drive!

omaharam 10-01-2008 07:44 PM

The response of the greddy feels pretty good to me. It also depends on how you drive. I left foot brake.

As for the 1700lbs. Might make it and might not. It's simply a goal. I believe that 1800 is attainable for sure. In XP our minimum weight will be 1648 so I set a goal close to that. If I can only get it to 1800 so be it. It's still gonna be a pretty fast autocrosser at that point. I have my work cut out for me to try that's for sure.

omaharam 10-01-2008 08:08 PM

On the turbo subject again. I can't say that I have any experience with a BB turbo and what that center section does for spool. But of the turbos you mentioned the Greddy has the smallest turbine wheel and based on that alone would spoon the quickest. It also has a smaller aspect ratio which is quicker spooling as well. The compressor side is a little smaller, but from what I've read should support well over my hp goal.

I'm just one guy and I'm here about 80 hrs a week. If I'm at the track for three days, I don't pick up the phone. Leave a detailed message with a question and phone number, I'll always return the call if I don't pick up.

No offense but I don't answer anyone's PM's. I can't disable them on CR.net so it says so right in my signature. You have no idea how many PM's I get a day otherwise. Guys asking for advice on which used car to buy and where to shop for it, how to fix a problem with a part I don't sell that they bought used off of ebay, the price of something that is right on the home page, and so on. I'm cool with it all but I simply can't keep track of PM's on the seven different forums I frequent. Getting about 150 emails a day and that's plenty.

Shoot me an email or pick up the phone. The most common question is when will the wheels be in. So the answer is right dead center on the home page of the website and on each wheel item page in big ass font, along with the answers to the 20 or so most often asked questions on the homepage and "FAQ" page.

If you asked me a question I understood, I most definitely directed you where to look or sent a link, i.e: "check the homepage of the website for latest details". I must send that reply out about 20 times a day.

Honestly, I'd rather show you how to find what you are looking for than find it for you. Rather teach a customer how to determine the correct answer themselves rather than make it for them. I've been instructing people how to either race bicycles or cars for over 20 years. That's how my brain works, for better or worse.

So back to the OP, I never did make 15x10's. Tried to, practically giving them away and still couldn't get enough orders to make the run happen profitably. FWIW, the new factory doing the spun forged 6ULR's owes me a tool. Free tooling is the only way I could swing a 15x10, which would inevitably be very low volume relative to the 15x8's & 9's. We'll see how things look after the 15x7 and 15x7.5 6ULR are done.
