New guy hailing from Wisconsin with turbo aspiritions

1 Attachment(s)
Hello All,

I guess I should stop lurking. I graduated from college here in Wisconsin and landed a full time job. The day after I heard I was hired, I drove my Honda Fit 5 hours and 4 states away to get my first; '94 Miata with 88k miles on the clock.

The car is black on black and came with the stock daiseys (pretty sure they are solid spokes) and some Kosei K-1's. Sadly I wasn't willing to buy the hard top that was on it for a grand so I left without it.

Attachment 234779

I have been working on my own vehicles (cars and bike) for the last 5 years or so. I think the most in depth work was a clutch replacement on my 94 civic. Since then, I have befriended a guy that was a full time mechanic for 5 years and now is going back to school. This whole thing is probably his fault since I helped him swap a 1JZ into his 1988 Toyota supra.

I just purchased a MegaSquirt II kit from DIYAutoTune with a few mods:
x MegaSquirt-II Programmable EFI System PCB3.0 - Kit w/ BLACK CASE
x MegaSquirt Stimulator v2.2 - UnAssembled Kit (MSStim22-K)
x MegaSquirt Relay Control 'ModKit' (VTEC, TVIS, Fans)
x MegaSquirt Pullup Resistors 'ModKit' (mk-pullup)

(I know I will need a way to get from the MegaSquirt's DB37 to the car's wiring harness, but I figured I would actually build and test the thing first with the MegaStim)

My plan is as follows:
Build the MegaSquirt
Install Wide Band O2 sensor & gauge and use AFM's temp sensor
Get the car running with the MegaSquirt
Install the BEGi Alpha Omega turbo system w/ Garrett 2560
Install DIYAutoTune's IAT Probe kit
Flyin Miata Stage 1 clutch kit w/ lightened stock flywheel or the Happy Meal
EnthusaCar 2.5" turbo exhuast
Koyo Radiator with coolant reroute

I wish the FAQ MegaSquirt threads still had all those pictures instead of dead links.

Please let me know what you think.

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you are headed in the right direction already. Dead links exist because we've been here so long. What are you hunting?

Welcome to the site 4strings, thanks for joining up!

I have 4, 5, and 6 strings

You should have forked over the skrilla for the hardtop.

If you are building the MS yourself and not going with a PNP version, spend the extra bit of money and go for MS3X. In the long run it is a better platform to start from.

What are you end goals for the car. So that this way we can better help you get there. For example I would install the IAT sensor, add injectors, and install the clutch before you even go for the turbo. I would also not think about the new Begi setup if you want it in a timely fashion.

+111111 to everything above.

IMO, if you can swing it I'd get the FM 2 clutch happy meal. There isn't "That" much of an effort used to move the level 2 clutch. Once I broke mine in, it's been butter since.

You may be able to get 'better' results by building/piecing together your own kit. I have a S3 kit from begi however I plan to 'eventually' go the efr/artech route.

But even with a begi cast mani, i could still prob do a gtx28 + tial vband exhaust housing with external wastegate (artech alltehthings) and still be happy.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the replies.

sixshooter:
I'm looking for a way to connect the MS to the factory wiring harness via the factory ECU plugs. I know there is the DIY Breakout Board for $90 and the 2' pigtail for $50, but that seems awfully steep for an adapter cable.

viperormiata:
I really wanted to but it wasn't in the cards

shuiend:
I haven't found any applications of the MS3X that are better than the MS2 and matter for my build. I'm not doing 2 step launch or Methanol injection. I would like to hear more than just people's opinions about why it is better though.

My goals are ~200 whp, daily drivable (I do 100 miles a day to work with stop and go traffic for some of it), learning, and lots of fun.

I have been planning on doing the build in stages like you said.

I'm not super concerned with timeliness on the build. I originally wanted the BEGi S4 but it has been discontinued.

Girz0r:
I'm not planning on over 318 ft/lbs why would I get the super sized. I think I will go the Happy meal route though instead of stock Flywheel lightened.

Thanks again everyone.

Still a ton of just opinions in that thread but after rereading, it looks like ms3x just doesn't need the modding that the ms2 does.

Flyin` Miata supersize clutch Happy Meal - DO IT, YOU WON'T REGRET IT. ;)

While yes, a level 1 clutch only solution 'should' be more than you need with such low goals. I'd highly recommend picking it up with the lightened flywheel simply for quicker throttle response. (very noticeable pickup)

And to my link above, I'd say get that instead if you 'do' plan on getting the flywheel package bc ($150 more) isn't too much. Also the level 2 clutch leaves you with more headroom & options on the table 'if & when' you feel like you want more tq holding capacities.

Id say, don't hold FM's word on clutch feel too heavy in the description. My FM lvl2 clutch+flywheel combo was just broken in a few hundred miles ago. Not sure how I went through life not knowing this amazing engagement feeling. I have a MSM with no boost at the moment and it's still snickety-snick shifting through the gearing.

I wouldn't look at that way of 'not needing' it due to tq rating. It's more of a durability thing in my view. You simply have the "option" to hold that high of rating.

I have a MSM but currently I'm not even a smidge above 1psi in terms of power nor am I expecting to hit that high of a mark with torque in the future. BUT! I have the option to beat on it a little even in semi stock form.

The higher rated clutch leaves options on the table "IN CASE" you ever want more powaah  while still being a reliable heavy duty clutch.

I get what you mean now. I'll keep that in mind when is clutch time.

you plan on tracking or AutoX'ing your miata at all? I'm from WI as well and should have my turbo build done by spring

Yea, I was hoping to try auto cross at some point.

Wisconsin is a pretty big state. Where approximately are you located? There were a handful of turbo Miatas at the last dyno day in Illinois a few weeks back to give you some ideas on how to put a kit together and for rides to know what different power levels feel like.

I'm not too far from the border in the Janesville area.

DNMakinson 11-29-2014 06:04 PM

Since you have stop and go commute, I think the lightened flywheel would be a mistake.

Chiburbian 11-29-2014 06:08 PM

I have a lightened flywheel and disagree. Have I stalled my car? Yeah, I have. But it is VERY rare. I also stalled my car with a stock clutch.

Define: lightened.

I predict a 10lb flywheel would behave much differently than a lightened stock one, if that is what you're referring to.

Also, do you have A/C in the stop and go traffic? If so, how does it react to the compressor cycling?

(Not being sarcastic, genuine questions)

Chiburbian 11-29-2014 07:56 PM

I believe I have the 10 lb flywheel that 949racing sold a year or so back.

Honestly you are right about the compressor cycling issues. I am trying to tune myself out of any strangeness in that area.

Ah. I do have air con in my car and plan on keeping keeping it so that may be another hurdle.
