New guy introduction
 

Hi everyone. My name is Chris and i'm from Kentucky. I purchased a 90 NA Miata back in October and have been working on getting it back to being a nice car again after it having a little neglect before I found it.

It's already on coils with Koni Yellows, but I have no idea which exact setup it is. I also has a catback exhaust system on it, a Boss Frog Double Hoop rollbar, some bitchin' Wal-mart fog lights, and a set of Konig 15x8's wrapped in some Nitto tires.

So far i've replaced the top on it, replaced the seats with some nicer used NA seats, replaced the center console, and then have been just trying to get all the maintenance caught up on it. The only thing left at the moment is to do the timing belt, then i'll be moving on to boost after that.

Which is why i'm here. I'm currently doing my research and gathering parts for a turbo build. Nothing too crazy, but i'm trying to shoot for 180-200hp.

Will you be going Mega Squirt?

Yes, I intend to use a Mega Squirt. It seems to be the best route to go for what i'm trying to achieve. I'll be using a Subaru WRX TD04 turbo, mainly because it was cheap and seems to be a good turbo for the 1.6L even though it's not commonly used. I'll have to adapt it of course, but that doesn't seem to be too big of deal.

I live in Nicholasville, which is about 15min from Lexington.

I love it around there. This last winter up north really made me miss KY. I like that double hoop bar.

What are you trying to buy/sell?

Blah.... If by good, you mean, reliable? then yes.... if by good you are referring to performance.... then blah....

It may be a good performing turbo for a factory Subaru, but on the miata 1.6 it spools terribly. You dont really start to get any kind of "pull" until close to 6000rpm.

With the right tuning it will get you to your goal HP... but there are better turbos out there that will do the same, and are just as reliable.

Hmmm, the turbo is way undersized for the 2.0l subaru it came off of, seems about right for a 1.6 liter. Not being a ball bearing setup it lacks a bit in transient response... but not that bad a choice for the Miata. I need to re-watch the MCM video on this, but I think it spooled up between 3500 and 4000 RPM.

but most people on this site who HAD this turbo got rid of it and never looked back. Its a very well-built turbo, and definitely has longevity (mine has been on for about 130,000 miles now with no issues) But its not known to be the best for the miata. considering the size, you would think it would be perfect for the miata, but it spools like a turbo 3 times its size, without any of the benefits of a turbo that big. lol

I actually ended up getting a different turbo from the guy for the same price as the WRX turbo. After researching more I don't really think the fabrication work is going to be worth the savings by using the WRX turbo. He says it was from a Nissan GT-R but didn't know which year. It appears to have a more traditional turbo flange on it though.

If it doesn't work I will have pretty much nothing in it so I can always get a better suited one if not.

I'm not in a big rush to get it done so I'm gonna take my time gathering parts and making sure I have everything for a good setup before digging into installing it all.

Most of the GTRs were twin turbo... besides the RB25, which i dont think was a GTR... i dont know though, i love the cars, but im absolutely not a Nissan expert. lol Unless it was swapped to a single turbo, in which case it wouldnt be factory. Is it the SR20 turbo from nissan??? if so, lots of miata guys run those, and ive never really heard anything bad about them.

What I was told is that it was from a twin turbo setup off of a GTR. He didn't know if it came from an RB or off of the VR38 they use in the current GTR. The guy he got it from used one of them on his 240SX and sold the other one to him.

I should have it by next week though so hopefully I can identify it a little better once I actually have it.

oh, ok... cool beans. Being that it was a factory turbo from a GTR it will probably be a little on the small side, but i bet it will spool fast as phuck. lol
and if the SR20 turbo is any indicator, it should be pretty good quality and reliable as well

I believe the twin turbos used on the RB26 Nissan engine are the equivalent of either gt2560's or 2860's, but with a different flange.
