New guy, moving to SSM

I've got a 94 r-package in STR with xidas, rs3's and big front bar, no power mods besides the crystal mod. So after having a bunch of miata people comment on how my car has now power, compression test yielded 140-150 psi on all cylinder, oil brought that back up to 175. So she needs a rebuild. Local shops wanted like 4-5k for a 020 bore with factory pistons and a head refresh. Looked a forged VVT engines, same price, knew I was going to SSM in a couple years anyways, so figured I'd just get there a tad early.

Right now, the handling is pretty down pat. At the devens tour this weekend with a better driver, 10* warmer temps, and class prep hp, the car would have won the class easy. Heck from my data 10* warmer temps would have moved me up ~4 spots since most of the S2K's ahead of my in STR were on star specs.

So I'm just hear to do some research on making somewhere in the 300-400 neighborhood. Start with high 2's until I switch to hoosiers and have aero, then see how far I can push it before it hurts drivability. I'm thinking BW EFR 6258 and welding up a manifold that mounts is low against the block near the steering column. I have to make sure there is clearance for power steering, since I will NEED it to be fast once I have 275 hoosiers and silly amounts of downforce. I was also looking at the rotrex setup, but from the looks of the kraftwerks one, its a no-go with power steering. Its not like I couldn't machine my own bracket setup for it, but then I have to come up with a solution to tension the belt and worry about a whole host of other things. So, research time.

I'm also supremely jealous of your suspension setup. wanna be my sugardaddy? :naughty:

I took this one today. The SPS stickers need to come off. Those are required for national events but look like ass. And I traded my AST stickers to a friend in CSP and looks like they won $500 between them from AST. I'll get a new set when theirs come in and put them on. It felt funny to be one of the only cars going that had ast stickers for the contingency and was actually running AST shocks.

All the other pictures are kind of old.

We need more Miata's in SSM....welcome to the world of "Super Street Mazda"

Leafy, congrats on signing up at the best site on the web!

o rly? Mine is fine with PS...

Sounds like you know more about going fast on the track than many here.

Check out the race prep section and ask your questions there.

Note that the EFR will probably not be readily available until next year.

I was just going on looks from the pics on their site. To me it looked like it went almost exactly in the spot the ps pump goes, but its not like those pics are tiny or anything.

Hah, check out the instruction PDFs in my build thread. The KW website even has a dropdown when ordering for PS/AC or no PS/AC option. Only difference is the belt length.

Welcome, STR brethren. :) I'm running my 2006 S2000 at National events and this year it's finally prepped about 90% of the way. That's awesome to see you guys (NA/NB Miatas) participating in STR as that is quite an underdog-taking against the s2k and NCs out there. I thought about prepping my 2000 Miata for STR but the previous owner hacked it up so much that it's just staying as my track rat. Post up some action shots if you have 'em and good luck on the build. I'm currently it the process of saving up funds for a turbo setup as well.

Oh, and I agree that those SPS stickers look like crap.

No current action shots that I know of. I've got a couple of me driving it on stockish suspension with various different street tires before and after I bought it. Our regions typical photo guy seems to keep missing it. Honestly its not that much of an under dog. Kicks the crap out of any sk2 on street tires I've seen handling wise, we're smaller, lighter, and I think if you can hit 140 whp and get down to 2150ish with driver and gas it should be an easy win for a miata with a half decent driver. Would need to have both tires though, kooks when its over 75*F and dry with toyos otherwise. Our local good STS guy raw timed all of STR by over a second with a 1.6 at the tour, so it really shouldn't be hard.

SSM is fun, especially at a prosolo... even if you end up in near dead last place... cause even if you drive for crap that day (like I did at blytheville) a fast car is always more fun. That said, given the power deficit we have against the FDs, I think you wanna go 6758 if you're going turbo, the spool is not much worse (300 rpm I've seen) but you've got a good chunk more top end... its what I'm looking at anyway. the s4/2560 is way underdog on a stock block for sure, lol.

Congrats on taking the plunge. I will be joining you in SSM soon enough I hope. A year tops is the goal. Anyhow, research the power steering pump from Porsche or Subaru thats electric. I think there was even a thread on this site about it. No belt so mounting is at your imagination. I plan on going this way when I get there.

What, no more plans for a 300whp 1.8 that's n/a? :D

I looked realistically, it was going to cost too much, need to be rebuilt too often, and I could never get down to the minimum weight legally.

I dont think the power deficit will hurt too much, last I checked they were around a 6:1 power to weight ratio, thats only 350 hp at our minimum weight. BUT you shouldnt need that much to beat them. I was even thinking going with the 6255 rather than the 6258 to reduce the rotational inertia even more and decrease the transient effects. But it looks like I would surge trying to push the power down low with it. Though it looks like it would be in positive manifold pressures only slightly off idle.

My car Raw Timed the three fastest SSM FD's on one of the courses last weekend at the Pro.....but conned it away. And going into day two of the tour was only 4ths out of first. We had a few mechanical glitches and Erik was having issues with his car. All in all it is more than possible for the Miata to compete with the right driver....I'm just not it.

I can tell you that it is not the cars that Make Brian, Carter and Erik so fast. Those 3 guys are amazing drivers and would be fast in ANYTHING.
