So here is my story: I was in Afghanistan when I decided I wanted a light weight older production car that had to be rear wheel drive, 5spd, and had a history of great handling. Many cars crossed my mind to include a s2000 (out of price range) 1g dsm/2g dsm (power reasons) and many more. I remember when i was in highschool my buddy brought in his 91 red miata 5spd into autoshop class. I got to drive it and instantly fell for the lust of wanting one. Ya they lack power but hell, the fun of hitting the curves was the best part. I feel the lighter the car the more you get out of your power modifications, hence horsepower/wgt ratio. I first bought a 1989 supra 3.0l turbo 5spd for $2k, had 146k miles on and was in rough condition, and they are heavy as hell!!!. I bought a low mileage engine from japan (osakajdmmotors.com) for the supra and tore the head off, put a mls gasket on, arp's, minor port/polish, new ct26 yoda turbo upgrade and then joined the army and sold the car to my best friend chris, which he still has after 6yrs that i have seen the car since I am currently still active duty army 11B (Infantry). Anyways, I decided to start my passion back up after now being stationed here in ft hood, texas (well now being stateside) i now have access to clean cars in the local areas. I couldn't really do anything being stationed in Germany for my first 3yrs, although there were plenty of skylines and rhd evo's i could get for $10k, I even got to drive my platoon leaders r33 skyline, badass! anyway, now I am here in texas and found this 1990 miata 5spd with only 73k miles on it for $2k. It was owned my a doctor and driven everyday total of 4 miles to and from the hospital..lol. I feel that has to be a great find so i bought it just yesterday 20th of july 2012 (for people who read this thread yrs later, whatever). I have been researching the hell out of this car the past few months and what everyone has been doing to them and the results they get from them. I plan on the following modifications:

-Megasquirt DIYPNP
-GM IAT Sensor Kit/$29
-Innovative Wibeband O2

Drivetrain Chassis

Interior
-Momo Hub Adapter
-Momo Steering Wheel
-JDM used Seats
-Water Temp Gauge
-Oil Temp Gauge

probably missing some things but you get the idea of my route with this car.

Oh by the way, the funding for this car is going to be literally built with my own blood, donating plasma every month for $240/mo. the rest is left over army income.

I will also be buying carbonfiber and kevlar weave material and start molding my own parts, if they turn out good i will offer cheaper then retail price service for you guys, to include carbonfiber sleeved IC piping :), this will be a while though.

So here is my pics of my find:

You'll do well here.

brokenspoon420 07-22-2012 02:23 PM

thanks everyone, i will be doing alot on this car and will keep pics/videos updated for everyone. this car is going to be done right, from the ground up, hopefully going for a clean jdm look that would be worthy of a magazine shoot when its all done.

Mobius 07-22-2012 03:11 PM

Welcome aboard. Looks like a clean car to start with.

brokenspoon420 07-22-2012 03:58 PM

clean as can be! thats the best part, i didn't want a rust bucket nightmare to deal with like my buddy chris is now dealing with in my story with my old 89' supra. He just rhino lined the whole car with a roller, wtf i know. so if he ever wrecks it the other vehicle is gonna be sanded down to sheet metal...lol

Pitlab77 07-25-2012 03:05 PM

clean car.

Welcome

I want to repair all the dings and scratches throughout the car, but the only way I think I could do it is to remove the hood, fenders, front/rear bumper, trunk lid, rear license plate panel and sand them down and rattle can them with black rustoleum primer which then I would have to prime the whole car black. I have a friend who use to paint cars before he joined the army and he's in my platoon. He has his $1,200 gun and says I just need to supply the air compressor and paint and he would enjoy painting the whole car for cheap if not free for me. I still haven't decided on a color though, I'm thinking back to the original crystal white paint. What do you guys all think?

ianferrell 07-27-2012 08:03 PM

Bright orange. Different, and all the Texas fools in there HD trucks might see you that way, check out the 949 racing blog... it works IMO.

brokenspoon420 07-27-2012 09:28 PM

sweet, orange sounds cool, ya i hate all this big truck ego scene here.

rkim 07-29-2012 10:58 PM

update: I will be painting this car sunburst yellow for $382 for paint at discount price, my friend in my platoon has a nice $1k paint gun and is getting the discount prices because of his old body/paint shop job before the army. He will be helping me with the sanding/prep work for free! I will post pics when the car is getting body work done and paint process.

brokenspoon420 06-02-2013 11:40 AM

update, I havn't been on here in forever. I originally wanted to turbo the car and what not. I just recently went through the spec miata fever idea and was going to build the car for spec miata racing. I changed my mind, I felt in the end being limited to what I could do to my car would eventually eat me alive. Instead I just want to build it my way.

Modifications since last initial post
-Installed ACT Spec Miata 4puck ceramic Clutch
-Resurfaced OEM flywheel $35
-949 Racing S.S. clutch line
-949 Racing OEM slave cylinder
-replaced rear main seals, trans. seals
-gutted catalytic convertor
-replaced valve cover seals
-painted valve cover high temp black
-modified valve cover, put in steel wool in chambers
-new OEM radiator
-manual dual fan switches
-started sanding body work
-neighbor back into my car and cracked rear finish panel :( so i fixed/painted black
-painted OEM rims high temp bbq black, removed hub centers
-stripped carpet out, removed upper rear carpet
-removed center armrest console
-removed OEM steering wheel/air bag with $30 ebay drift wheel 320mm for now.

More to come and need to take pics of progress.
