New Member from New England

Just a small introduction here since I am new to the forums:

My name is Ryan and I live in Massachusetts. I'm 21 and have had a passion for tinkering with electronics and mechanical devices since I came out of the womb. Currently I am on the hunt for my first Miata since I have abandoned retail and found myself a nice, comfy corporate position. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will have some pictures up of my new car, even if its an N/A that is rusting and beat to shit. A build thread will also be on its away in the next few months. When it comes to engines and mechanics I'm a bit green, even though I have spent some time working under a Master mechanic and hybrid specialist for months on end. I know enough to get by and fix my own mistakes. Ever since I helped rebuild a friend's N/A Miata, strip it down, and prep it to be a nice street and track machine I've been hooked. I know I will learn a lot and be reprimanded for dumb shit along the way but that is all a part of the process. This place is already 100x better than Nasioc, where I usually reside since I am more familiar with the EJ platform and dream of turning a destroyed bugeye into a New England street car that can tackle any weather. Hopefully I can be more helpful than distracting. Thanks guys and I look forward to meeting some local members soon.

Welcome to the forum.

Buy a 94-up car to start with. It will have several major improvements Mazda added along the way. Otherwise, you will need to do them yourself at $$$ plus time and effort.

I appreciate the heads up. I've been trolling around, reading everything I can when I have time off or during my lunch hour. There hasn't been anything in my area that is priced relative to condition, not that I'm opposed to going on a road trip but having a few extra dollars in my pocket for other things is never a bad idea. My fiancee is all for it as long as she gets to drive the car throughout its transformation. Hopefully I can teach her some basics and instill some concepts while she gets her hands dirty. That would make my day. The Miata is definitely the car I've had the most fun driving and I've taken out a few and pushed them to my limits and they still had more to give. My buddy's FR-S is nice, agile, and peppy but still doesn't sound as pure or feel as connected as his Miata does. I'm a fool for boxer the rumble but revving up a Miata on back roads with the top down can't be beat in my opinion. Anything beats my old '03 V6 Mustang from high school though.

I've been thinking about buying something newer, more practical, more powerful, but there isn't a car in the world I wouldn't tinker with or spend money on modifying. At least I have a vision and much more wiggle room when it comes to money and mods when I pick up my Miata. Plus the availability of parts, ease of work, etc... the list goes on. Maybe one day I will buy something really frivolous like a 911 and spend a few weeks sleeping on the couch for not consulting my lady about it, but for now I'm more than happy to be picking up what I think is the best driver's car for the money.

Yeah, the Miata benefits from a strong and inexpensive aftermarket.

Hey Ryan where you located? I'm in palmer ma

vtc_ryan 01-25-2015 06:55 PM

Over in Belchertown, not far from you at all actually. My fiancee works in Palmer chances are you have seen me driving around in the Rustang and didn't know it. 18in. Saleen reps, metallic blue, with a white top. Unfortunately it stands out more than it should.

smigiel 01-25-2015 07:37 PM

I have not seen it around yet. I daily a silver 13 wrx. Me and another buddy in town both have miatas. If you want to get into some racing let me know we autocross and do track days quite a bit.

vtc_ryan 01-25-2015 09:26 PM

That sounds awesome. I will be picking up something in the next few weeks after this snow clears a bit. I've been hoping to get a 2012-13 Golf R as a daily soon along with picking up a Miata. Depending on how time and money play out I will probably just pick up a Miata and save up for something different as a daily come next winter. I am so indecisive when it comes to cars, motorcycles, and pretty much anything powered by an engine. The Miata is a go but no idea what I want for a daily. Chances are the Miata will be the daily for a while.

Miata is a fine daily in the summer, with snow tires on its a fine daily in the winter too but only do that to one thats already started rotting.
