Default New miata owner,16 year old with a death wish

Hey guys, somewhat new to cars, experienced with forums. I'm 16 and I got a 91 convertible with a 5 speed. I have a 200hp goal, unsure how I want to accomplish it,deciding between turbo,or cams and spray. Hope you can help me decide. Car weighs in at 1550 in race prep I'm told (no hood, trunk,or driver seat)
Mods:
Lexan windshield
No side Windows
Top removed
Emissions delete
No dash
Mild exhaust
Big air filter,no sound deadening in intake
No ac/heater
power inverter

So I'm hoping for good advice from you guys on the cheapest way to reach my goal. Thanks in advance

I get the assumption you have much research to do.

And turbo, cams, spray?

Bro, you're on miataturbo - TURBO will get you 200whp.

And how to you drive with no driver seat? WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS!?!

From my own experience, adding horsepower to vehicle has never been cheap. And I've also wasted a lot of money on stuff that really only gave me a small percentage increase. Where as I could of saved up for a little bit longer and done things the 'right' way the first time around and would of had a much faster vehicle.

Whats a power inverter? Why would you have sound deadening in an intake?

Power inverter converts the 12v power,to 110ac power,so I can plug anything in. Most modern cars have sound deadening foams in the intake so you can't hear induction noise.

As for the seat removal,I mistyped,I meant to say passenger seat. I will get pics tomorrow.

You're definitely going to need cams, although the stock ones are entirely adequate for 200 HP.

Spray (by which I assume you mean nitrous) is a relatively cheap and simple way to achieve that goal for exceedingly brief periods of time. I'm not sure what your definition of "race trim" is, but if it's 1/4 mile drag racing, it'll be perfectly adequate. Just sell the Miata first and buy something else. I have no idea why (I'm not a drag racer), but these cars just seem to suck at the dragstrip. For street or track applications, I wouldn't even consider nitrous. I like being able to go fast for more than 30 seconds between fillups.

For everything else, turbocharging is a simple, reliable, not inexpensive way of making sustainable power, presuming you don't skimp on fuel and ignition management. (Prepare to be bombarded with lots of messages telling you to buy a Megasquirt ECU.)

Since you've started with a 1.6 car, plan on replacing the propshaft, differential and axles with those from a '94-'05 car. The 1.6 diffs are undersized and so fragile that with decent tires you can break them with a stock engine. Also, when you start clutch-shopping, budget for a '94-'05 flywheel again. They're larger, and there are many more good options.

People will also tell you to replace the engine with a 1.8, preferably with a '99-'05 head. This is your call. You can make 200 HP easily on a stock 1.6, even though the later engines are better in every possible way.

That's pretty impressive, must be quite a lot of rust on it. There are a few Miatas running around which have had the entire body removed and just a few bits of tubeframe installed which are in that general weight class.

For what it's worth, the stock hood and trunk lid are both light enough to pick up with two fingers. The hood, in particular, is made from aluminum.

Got any cats?

Please post pictures of your kitty cats.
I like kitties. And 16yr old boys. Post some selfies, please. Preferably with a kitty or two. I have three kitties. One is fluffy and two are sleek and not as fluffy. They are fun to pet. One likes his ears rubbed but one other doesn't like that. He wags his tail and then bites if you rub his ears. The fluffy one likes to be scratched anywhere but doesn't like to be off the floor. If I pick her up she wants down. She can bite and scratches me to get down too. She doesn't like that. The other one will jump in your lap and lay down for a while, but he likes the back of the couch more. He can see the whole room from there. I can't sit up there because I am too big now. I think it would break or fall over. But if I did I would be like a big kitty cat sitting up there. I could see the whole room from there. I could even see the kitchen. Maybe I will try getting up there later and pretend to be a kitty. I can lick my paws and clean behind my ears. Then I can be like a kitty. What's your kitty's name?

Ah. The kind of racing where they don't have a clock or a lap-counter.

Gotcha.

Well, welcome aboard anyway.

I've been reading and thinking a lot about sandwiches of late. I keep being reminded of the book Mostly Harmless, in which Arthur Dent becomes stranded on a remote planet populated by succulent animals, and decides to become the greatest sandwich-maker in all the galaxy.

TED, some months back, did a wonderful segment on a man who, inspired by Dent's sense of futility, decided to build a toaster entirely from scratch. (From scratch meaning literally from scratch- he mined and smelted the various metals needed, excavated the mica, etc.)
