New to miataturbo.net

Hello fellow miata gurus. I decided to join miataturbo.net for the insight and help in my quest for turbo power.

I just recently picked up a 1999 classic red miata 5sp with the popular package and factory 15. The car is stock. Amazing deal for 2500 only issue is piston 4 psi is at 150. No biggie as it's the best excuse for a newer lower mileage motor while I tear the factory one down. It does have 192,xxx miles on the odometer but the vehicle is very solid.

My plans is to turbo and be reliable street/track/weekend miata. I do have years of experience around cars and with my brother and his 94 begi s3 miata on mspnp putting down 230whp on a mustang... We will turn this nb into a beast. I will update more later on.

P.s. anyone know if all 99 miata cam with 3.9 final drive? My miata on 15x6.5 with 195/50 at 78-80mph runs 4100-4200k rpm. From my search it is said all 99-00 besides the 10ae is 3.9. I'm I wrong?

Welcome to the forum. I thought the ones with 5 speeds came with 4.10 gears but I'm not sure I was paying attention to the NBs.

From the wiki:

The 4.30:1 came on:
-1999-2005 5-speed
-1999 auto

The 4.10:1 came on:
-1994-1997 5-speed
-1994-1997 auto
-2000-2005 auto
-2004-2005 6-speed (including MSM)

The 3.909 came on:
-1999-2003 6-speed

The 3.636:1 came on:
-2001+ Austrailan 6-speed

In 2003, Mazda switched from the Torsen to the Tochigi-Fuji (T-F) LSD. The 2003 T-F diffs were prone to failure, so avoid these if you can.

Be advised that the 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed Miata was equipped with a similar 7" ring and pinion, but the differential unit itself is larger. When referring to a "1.8 LSD" the presumption is that the MSM is not included in that category. The MSM also uses larger axles, which are only compatible with the MSM diff.

The MSM limited slip is similar/identical to the limited slip unit found in the Honda S2000.

I see. Dame that is horrible then. Thanks for the quick replies guys. Seem like I gotta source a 3.9 r&p or complete diff. Would it match the 5sp or does most guys prefer the 4.10 with it? Turbo in the very near future.

MSM came with 4.1, not 3.9.

Every 5spd NB1 i've driven has a 4.30.

Thanks guys for the quick response. Seems like I'll be sourcing the 3.9 soon. Also I am hmong btw.

I wonder if the list applies around the world. Like the Japanese and European market got the same thing as USA. I can pick up a jdm 3.9 lsd up for cheap.
