New MSM owner in FL, lots of pics

Greetings fellow turbo Miata owners. My long search for a Miata finally came to an end back in February of this year. I have been looking for the right one for a couple years now, actually signed up on this site back in 2010, but haven't posted until now. I had test driven a couple of turbo NA's, which were fun, but they were mostly all done being built, and I wanted a blank slate I could make my own. I decided to start searching for MSM's, and was holding out for a Lava Orange with the GT package, which I luckily eventually found locally.

I picked up my bone stock 2005 LO GT on Feb. 22nd, here it is next to my DD. The previous owner had added Clearwater component speakers and an IPOD integration to the stock Bose unit, which sound pretty good actually. The car also had a brand new factory canvas top installed a couple months prior to me buying it. :bigtu:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

The first things to go were the headlight covers and front plate frame. First thing to go on was a faded red hardtop with headliner and defrost off a '99 I scored for $700.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Which was soon plastidipped black by me, along with the gas door and hardtop striker plates.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Next I added a 320mm Sparco wheel and an Autometer boost gauge to the a-pillar. Also sourced some OEM Mazdaspeed floormats since my car did not come with them.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Went to Miatapalooza and ended up winning 3 dyno pulls from BSI Racing in Holly Hill, FL. You can also see the Llumar Airblue 80 tint I had installed on all windows including the windshield in this pic.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Then I went over to BSI Racing and proceeded to get some baseline numbers. the car seems to have some serious heatsoak issues. Hopefully a bigger intercooler will help with this down the road.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

I then ordered and installed a MAF relocation intake kit put together by a member over on Mazda-speed.com, and went back to BSI for another dyno run. The car picked up an extra 26hp and 25tq at the wheels from the intake kit. Drivability improved with the kit as well.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

BSI quoted be a pretty reasonable price to install the Hard Dog hardcore roll bar I had sitting around, so I decided to let them do it!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

The Hard Dog looks great, and I could tell a big difference in chassis stiffness after it was installed. Especially going in and out of driveways, and driving on uneven brick streets.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Future plans include a 2.5" ebay stainless downpipe, a brake overhaul, then probably coilovers and new smaller/wider wheels and tires.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370274993

Thanks for looking!

Where in Florida are you located? I am pretty sure I met you at Miatapalooza. I was with FrankB and we had the 2 MSM's, silver and black, that were sitting in that long row to the right of your car.

Welcome. Clean car good choices with mods so far. Get EMS and unlock all the power you're missing out on with the stock ecu.

I am located in Downtown Orlando. I remember meeting you guys, which one of you bought my NRG short hub? lol

Thanks, EMS will be added depending on if/when I get tired of ~200whp. ;)

Ryan_G 06-03-2013 12:31 PM

Frank bought the short hub. I suggest you get a new EMS even if you don't want more power. It is not really the top end that benefits as much as the mid range. The stock ECU is a pile of shit. The MS2 was the best mod period for the car. No more bog, no more afterburner at 5.5k, you get a higher redline than 6.5k, and much more reliable AFR's. The stock ECU is lean for quite a bit of the map in boost.

EDIT: If you look at your dyno plot you can see how the stock ECU keeps you in the high 12's until about 5k rpms. You hit max boost long before that. With the EBC hooked up I am hitting 14 psi by 3.2k rpms and holding it until redline. I'll have to link my virtual dyno for you so you can see what I am talking about.

18psi 06-03-2013 12:32 PM

If only that 200whp was over a broad rpm range and not the last 1500rpm it'd actually be fun. But its not.

ozbrock 06-03-2013 12:50 PM

Hmm, you guys are making some very strong points!

Here is a virtual dyno from when I was still trying to tune the car which is why the boost has that dip at 3200 rpms and the AFR's are not smoothed out and fully tuned in in this graph either. This has since been fixed but this graph still gives you a rough idea of the difference an MS can make.

ozbrock 06-03-2013 09:55 PM

Does that virtual dyno reflect all of the mods in your sig as well? Also, are you tuning it yourself, or did you take it somewhere? Those graphs look pretty tasty.

Impuls 06-04-2013 02:32 AM

+1 on a standalone next.
My engine is an 04 MSM.
I was running 15psi and reaching fuel cuts but it was such a blast to drive.

Braineack 06-04-2013 03:36 AM

Welcome to the site ozbrock, thanks for joining up!

Yeah that does reflect all the modifications in my signature. You don't have an aftermarket exhaust yet so that will present a restriction from what I have there but you will still notice a significant gain from the megasquirt.

Doppelgänger 06-06-2013 11:43 AM

Welcome.

If you're looking at exhausts, I'd HIGHLY recommend Enthuza products over eBay crap.

ozbrock 06-06-2013 12:14 PM

Well, I already have the Ebay 2.5" downpipe sitting in my garage, but I wasn't planning on using anything else Ebay as far as exhaust goes. I plan on swapping out all the hardware that came with the Ebay pipe with some grade 8's from Ace Hardware. As far as the rest of the exhaust goes, I haven't made a decision yet. I have browsed the Enthuza site and everything looks nice, may have to go that route if nothing used pops up on the forums.

Doppelgänger 06-07-2013 11:48 AM

I will also warn you that you need to make sure you get something pretty quiet/deep. If you go with something that is too open, you will start to have issues with exhaust leaks at the manifold/head. I've seen first-hand that loud exhausts on MSMs cause the nuts on the manifold to come loose over time. It's something about the heat and design of the manifold/turbo/exhaust that creates a resonance which causes the nuts to come loose.

Thanks for the heads up. I would like to keep it on the quieter side of the spectrum because i do a lot of highway cruising here in Orlando. That and I'm not a ricer.

So its been over a year since I've updated this thread, I'm bored and I figured I'd update MT.net on my progress on the car so far. I still have yet to upgrade the ECU, but that is finally next on the list once I get my tax return back any day now, going to go with a Rev built MS3. My only reasoning for holding off on the ECU for so long is the fact that my MSM is particular only very rarely exhibits the hesitation and neck snapping 5500 rpm boost spike. That and my friend with a Big Enchilada MSM (hydra) still has yet to take me in a drag race, but he has taken me a few times at autocross.

I'll try to keep this update in chronological order. First up is a custom washer fluid tank built by FrankB!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698353

Dipped it black
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698353

Here you can see the stock washer bottle in the engine bay, and a mock up of where the aluminum tank will sit.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698353

And finally installed.

Headlights were looking pretty hazy after ~10 years in Texas and then Florida, so some sanding and polishing was in order. I had them sprayed with automotive clear coat afterwords to protect them from future fading.

You can kind of see how yellow they are in this pic, also a foreshadowing to my future autocross numbers.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698648

After, so much better.

The stock IC wasn't cutting it, so I purchased a 350hp unit from Fab9 that fits wonderfully in the mouth of the beast.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

My 225/45r15 BFG Rivals wore out after about 10k miles of very spirited street driving, and I acquired a set of 225/45r15 Hankook RS3 V2's to replace them.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

High horsepower sandwich.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

I wrapped the radio and shifter surround with some black brushed aluminum vinyl to cover up the awful factory faux carbon fiber look, and also to match my new 320mm MOMO Monte Carlo. Also pictured is my new Miata Roadster short shifter with angled extension, and a factory NC Miata shift knob. Another new mod visible here are my Mitsubishi Eclipse air vents, which I am also in love with.

New keychain from Revlimiter.net
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Full turbo-back exhaust came shortly thereafter. I added a 2.5" catless downpipe mated to a 2.5" to 3" Flyin' Miata Mazdaspeed exhaust. Sadly the only picture I have of the exhaust is the one I took of it strapped to my rollbar on the way to get installed.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Found my cars on Google Streetview.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Had the car washed, buffed, and sealed by a friend. She sure is a shiny bitch now.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Cleaned out my garage and played around with some 26" tires left behind by an old roommate. Now the Miata finally has a roof over its head and I can easily maintain the incredible shine brought forth by the paint sealant.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Parked next to a sweet green FiST.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Finally headed to my first autocross with my friend Justin and his Titanium Grey MSM. I had so much fun, and much to my friends dismay, was faster than him by a handful seconds. After competing in Novice class and taking 1st place on my first time out, I was bumped up into BSP early.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

My friend still stuck in Novice and me running either BSP or SMST2 depending on which club we were racing with. Also, purchased some magnets to give her a General Lee look.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Remember that paint sealant I mentioned? Look at those beads!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Purchased some hood louvers from Singular Motorsports that I still have yet to install. Need to grow some balls! I will only be using the 2 side louvers, and painting them matte black.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

More autocross action.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Purchased some front frame rail braces from Garagestar, and holy cow did these stiffen up the front end! I was very pleasantly surprised with their performance.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424698935

Now I've finally caught up to date with the present and my latest mod was a set of Tein Flex coils with 9kg/7kg spring rates. They ride like a dream and handle amazingly. I also just had the car aligned with 949Racing's dual duty street/track alignment settings. Please excuse the dirty car.

Now, my 225/45 RS3's are very near to the end of their lifespan and I very excitedly acquired some 245/40r15 Maxxis Victra RC-1's, which are 100 treadwear DOT approved rubbers. I also painted the letters on them white, which is something I've always wanted to do, but at the same time always told myself I would never do it unless I was painting real racing tires.
