Have had my Miata a year, coming into some money so Ive decided to build and boost my 1.6.

The car was built april 13 1989, same day i was born, didnt know that until after the fact, its been through hell (previous owner). Primer sprayed everywhere, just an over all bad job by the PO.
When i Bought it:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351672011
The soft top leaked like a siv, so the interior was tossed, and a hardtop was bought. A bunch of stuff happened.
Roughly as it sits now:

Long story short, Im here to learn more about boosting my 1.6 and what is the best course of action to build the motor itself.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Guess I should Mention, Im in the process of piecing together a stronger motor; for some weird reason I want to keep the 1.6, so that it can take boost properly. If anyone has recommendations or info on build a 1.6 Im all ears (unless that recommendation is change to a 1.8).

Sup phaggot... good to see you over here now as well.

I meant phaggot as a term of endearment... phaggot

Actually miss seeing you shit on peoples threads. But seriously :fawk:. lol

On a side note, I probably wont be doing a lot of talking on this site, as it seems to be rather technical and Im not knowledgeable about this stuff yet. Just gonna be finding info, though one thing I havent found yet is a rebuilt 1.6 that is boosted anyone know of a thread with one that I can check out?

dk wolf 11-04-2012 03:50 PM

rebuilt boosted 1.6? There's quite a few.
Here's one I found after spending a deci-second of searching.
boner

There's others... so just search keywords (1.6 boost/boosted) depending on what you want, keep looking. Charlie91 I think is also on here.

I don't take a shit on too many threads here though (kinda hard doing that seeing as everyone usually beats me to it). Mostly just read up on stuff and say outrageous things in the BS section.

Thanks; I just havent sat down and searched yet, also didnt think too many people would actually boost the 1.6. Ill check out the thread in a bit.

Yeah I have a feeling Ill just be posting to this thread, or asking a question to make something more clear, and that's about it.

Welcome! I havea turbo 1.6 as well, fun motor, just for different application.

Fireindc 11-06-2012 04:33 PM

You can make plenty of power on a 1.6. I made 240whp on mine, although I'm still making the jump to 1.8 for more power under the curve.

thenuge26 11-06-2012 04:43 PM

You can boost either one, but I think it is pretty much decided that the 1.8 is better in every way.

You wouldn't be the first to build a 1.6, but if you are going through all the trouble of building an engine, you might as well start with the superior one.

This. And i'm a current turbo 1.6 owner.

I'm contemplating buying a 1.6 out here to turbo... or else just go through the headache of doing a 1.8 swap... =\

Say it loud, I got a B6 and proud :greddy:

The 1.6 can make just as much power as the 1.8 but, it all depends on how usable you want that power. For a car that depends on the low end and "under the curve" power, there is no replacement for displacement. Both motors have the same "danger zone" for torque on the stock motor. Slap a gt2560 onto both motors and you can easily see 240-250whp, the difference will be the 1.8 making that power a little bit sooner and have a little bit more torque. Stock for stock, I really don't see a drastic need for change unless you have plans farther down the road for a road racing car or some other specific application.

For a weirdo like me who wants the majority of the power from 4k and up (short runner intake, gigantor turbo, etc..) the 1.6 will do just fine as the powerband shift north will be smooth and help with traction when I start picking fights with supercharged vettes.

thenuge26 11-07-2012 12:03 PM

I get that not everyone cares about power under the curve. But are the B6 heads just as bad as the BP heads? Will the B6 still make power over 8K, unlike the BP?

Fireindc 11-07-2012 03:45 PM

VVT head > 99-00 head > 94-97 head > 90-93 head iirc. but 90-97 might be basically the same in flow, i'm not sure.

^This guy, I like him! :bigtu:

Edit: Seriously though, this is pretty much exactly what I want to do too. Though I am looking at doing a full rebuild of my 1.6, not sure if Ill increase displacement.
