New NA from MA

Hello, my name is Eric and I'm 48 years old. I was a Ford trained auto technician back in the late 80's to mid 90's. I changed carriers several times over the years and am now a Self employed sub contractor / stair builder and part time NRA firearms instructor. Married, with children and a home owner.

I have owned / restored / modified several performance cars and motorcycles over the years. (Mustangs, Ducati's ect) A 68' mustang with a 289, 4-speed was my first. My last was an 85' GT 5.0 with ported heads, cam, Nitrous and numerous suspension upgrades. I have experience rebuilding automatic and manual transmissions, engines and troubleshooting factory electronic engine controls. I have yet to do a turbo build though.

I recently acquired a mostly stock 95', 1.8, 5-speed Miata with 69,000 miles on it and have a desire to turbocharge it. I initially contemplated doing a 5.0 engine build / swap with this car but have decided to go the turbo route instead.I find turbocharged cars more entertaining now and want to retain reasonable economy with enhanced performance. I plan to do some light suspension and brake upgrades as the project progresses. My focus at the moment is on a FM II kit without electronics, coupled with a MSPNP2 or MSPNP Pro. I'm not sure I need the additional features the Pro offers but need to do more research. I'm not opposed to the extra cost if it is something I will make use of later. I'd like to run 3" exhaust on this build at some point and have access to a fabricator. (My brother)

I'm looking at the Flow Force 640 injectors, Innovate WB o2 sensor kit and GM AIT sensor from DIYAutoTune. This and an FM level 1 clutch / pressure plate. My goal is 250ish RWHP with good drive ability and reliability. I wish to retain the AC and power steering.

Budget: I wanted to try and keep this build at around $4000 but see it being closer to $5000. I've looked for places to trim the "fat" but don't want to compromise the quality or reliability of the build. I look forward to learning more from reading what members of this board have done. My next topic of research is learning as much as I can about the Megasquirt tuning process.

Welcome

Best first post on the site!

Looks like you did your research.

I'm still learning this stuff myself, but I'm pretty sure you don't need the Pro. MS3 Basic is easier to use (so I've heard) and is more than capable for your goals.

ID1000 injectors are favored on this site, because unless you end up going E85 and over 400whp, they are the last injectors you need to buy. Also idle quality is the best.

You also bought a 1.8 so that is good. You should hit 250 no problem, reliably. Well, unless you track it often, in which case your 5 speed might brake.

Thank you for your feedback, I will look into the Injector Dynamic 1000's and MS3 basic.

I just started reading the 335 page reference manual for using the Tuner Studio for MS3.

Also, it's a haul for you, but the 19th, the Larz Anderson Museum in Brookline is holding a Miata's on the Lawn event.

Thank you Pat, that sounds like a good time if I can squeeze it into my schedule.

Depending on what I'm working on, it's sometimes difficult for me to get out during the week.

Whoops, 17th, not 19th. It's a Sunday.

Good first post and welcome!
The FlowForce's are great for your application. No need for ID1000's. save the 150$.
You can save an extra grand or so going used turbo and ebay intercooler, or check out the classifieds. There's an FM kit for sale.

Flow force and ID are both EV14, so that's good, but the flowforce will not give you much headroom on E85.
If you have plans for E85 and turning up the boost down the road, get the ID1000s.
