New NB owner in Austin TX

Hello all, coming over from mkI MR2 supercharged ownership. I got the miata bug last year when I picked up a 90 to drive while the engine was out of my MR2. Found out I liked the miata way more than the MR2, but had to sell it to buy a house. Well I've been pining for one ever since, and after I got my MR2 back together sold it and just picked up the following:

2003 triple black base model Miata
98k miles
completely unmolested by the previous owner
$7500

A little more than I wanted to spend - was really looking for a newer NA, but this one popped up and I really liked it. Don't have much cash left to do the turbo just yet, but I'm trying to learn up now so that I can move on it when I'm ready.

I'm hoping to eventually have a not-too-extreme reliable setup right at 200 whp, and I really like what BEGi and FM are offering as far as all the parts in one package. Right now I'm leaning toward going with an FM no-electronics kit with the GT2560R and try and check out e-manage, as I think this might offer a little better tuning than their voodoo box for pretty much the same money. I'd prefer to megasquirt, as we've started using it on a BP-powered festiva that we're building for GRM $2009, but it doesn't look like there's been too much megasquirt action in the 01+ NB area.

Anyhow, just popping in to say hello, and so far this forum looks to be a great resource.

Welcome, great first post!

As for the turbo, I'd go used with the hardware (turbo, mani, etc) so that you can spend a little extra on an EMS. y8s on here uses a hydra EMS and likes it well enough, I think his is <01 too.

right on, I have no problem buying used stuff, just have to make sure the turbo hasn't been wrecked by the PO. especially when the turbo is like $1000 of the kit price.

I haven't completely priced it yet, but they may give you breaks for buying the whole kit. at right around $3k shipped it seems pretty tough to beat to have all the parts there as soon as I'm ready to install.

I really like what you've done with your car - the lip and vents are a nice touch, while still subtle. and you can't beat the big ole intercooler hanging out up front. how was setting up the MSPNP? wish they'd make one for the NB.

Thanks! There are a couple more pics of it if you click on the car.

Setting up the MS was simple, I was scared to do it so Ben and M2cupcar helped. Once it's in and the timing is set you're good to go. Too bad the MSPNP isn't an option for you though. It's a great deal.

I'm sure that buying the whole kit would be cheaper than going no-electronics and then procuring the EMS separately. As a bonus, buying the whole kit qualifies you for FM's discount thing for a year and you get their support for the EMS.

yea it probably would be cheaper in the long run, i just have a hard time fronting the 5500 all at once, heh. i'm hoping if i wait long enough someone will come up with a breakthrough with the MS.
