A 94-up is preferable unless you want to make a longer list of expensive and time consuming modifications than is required on the later cars. There is a long list on the later cars too, by the way. You are looking at a minimum of $2k above the price of the 94-up car if using used parts. More if 89-93.
<This guy is a cheapskate and did it with mostly used/Chinese parts, so he knows. |

This is the cheapest one in the year ranges I have found. I am requesting more information on it now. I'll give more information when he replies to my email. |
That sounds much more promising :)

Are they interference engines?
Put away the wallet, turn off Craigslist, and start educating yourself before you do something really foolish and fail. PS: no, they're not. |
I have to applaud you for making it this far with the comments you've been receiving without storming out in rage. Though it was entertaining to flip through the first 4 pages, I'm glad that you're finally starting to listen :)
Make sure you google things before you ask any question that might sound silly to MT guys...Good luck finding the right miata! |

Better off buying an unmolested 94+...
I can find them reliably for 2200-3500. Unless you're dying to burn time and money. The rear end on the 1.6's are ok... they are prone to failure above stock power. Also if it's a short-nose crank then that's a loose cannon. Maybe good maybe not... Bigger brakes on the 94+ etc... I bought a 90 and now have a 90 with a 99 motor and 2003 rear end. blah blah blah. Not a platform I'd like to start with unless It was practically given to me for free. Ask me how I know all of the above. It's NOT from reading anything on this forum... I blew out my clutch within a week of turbo, i blew out my rear end within 2 weeks of turbo. There are lots of parts you aren't considering like the stupid shifter condom. that shit's like ~$50. Start with a better platform. It'll cost a lot less TIME and MONEY. It will also give you a car that is a lot nicer and easier to take pride in. Unless you're a freak like Jeff and love taking apart every part on the car and cleaning it. |
