New to turbos, not Miatas

What's up guys,
I've been a member her for awhile but never had anything to contribute. Hopefully that will be changing soon. I am in the process of piecing together a turbo setup for my '96.

I made the mistake of using miata.net for Megasquirt advice when I should have come here. Anyway I've been running my car for the past 3 years on the MS and it's been great. The last few months I have been buttoning down my car and making sure it's all ready for a turbo in the spring.

I have a '96 motor with '04 pistons, and ported '96 head with oversize valves rebuilt about 70k ago. I'm running 10:1 compression which is definitely not ideal for a turbo, but the way I see it; if the '02+ Miata guys can boost their cars why can't I? My goal is only 200whp which should be pretty attainable considering I'm making 130whp N/A right now. Hopefully I can hit that with a T25 and 8-10psi. I'll be using a Mazdaspeed Miata clutch probably unless I can buy a used ACT cheap from a Spec Miata racer or something.

Welcome, clean car. Where about in CO are you? Keep in mind your effective compression ratio will decrease with altitude, and either way you will be fine with 10:1 with good tuning.

Do you have a dyno sheet of the current setup? Just curious ;)

Thanks man. I'm in Denver. I'll be down there in Taos this winter shreddin up your mountain though!

Yeah, the altitude definitely helps, already been taking advantage of the extra timing we can run :)

Here's me on the way back from Taos last year and my dyno sheet. Guess the numbers got inflated over the years in my head haha it's closer to 120whp.

Eh, 123.75 rounds up to 130 as long as you aren't showing someone the dyno sheet.

Sick man! I made 240whp on a dyno in albuquerque with my old tired 1.6. Your goal is easily obtainable. That's hilarious and awesome that your ski car is a miata, props. Hit me up if your at TSV, i'm always up there. Hopefully we get some good snow asap though..

Thanks man, I'm running one of your Megasquirts in parallel :bigtu:

While I got people's attention, does anyone forsee any problems passing emissions if I reinstall the OEM computer and MAF and wire the wastegate open completely? Will the turbo build boost even when the WG is open? Emissions here is only a sniffer, they don't even care about a CEL, just the sniffer. They also run the cars pretty hard on the rollers to get "real world" emissions so there will be no babying or shifting below 3000rpm, they usually rev it up to 5k at least.

If I have to put it all back to stock that would suck but testing is only every 2 years so I can live. Also we have roadside vans that do spectrometer testing on highway on-ramps so maybe I'll just make the effort to hit the right number of those (and coast through with the key off haha).

Subscribed. I'm in Fort Collins and will be attempting a similar build. 99NB, currently with MP45 JRSC but will be going MS3 and turbo in the next year. I've been curious about emissions as well. I know with my SC, I can pass by zip-tying the bypass open and sending a prayer to the gods of smog. Don't know a thing about turbos and MS vs. emissions...yet....

And welcome to the brutal world of MT.net. If you're ever heading up north and have an afternoon, hit me up and we'll do the brewery circuit.
