Default New to the forum.

Miata noob here!

I am excited there is this much of a following. Hopefully I can contribute to the community.

To introduce myself :
My name is Kyle and I literally just bought an na miata (91) it has a different motor than original however it is still a 1.6 out of a car with 88xxx miles on it. It's white and has the stock 5 speed, what is not stock is the Garrett turbo kit. I bought it for 2k delivered (I think a steal). It has factory a and power brakes. Before I bought it compression test cylinders. They all hover around 152. The turbo was rebuilt when the engine was replaced (td04). It has a vortec raising rate fpr And an msd sebring. It also has the flying miata duals.

Now to the bad:

I don't know shiz about miatas...

The car will only produce about 1lb of boost

The ebrake needs to be adjusted

The stereo is inop.

Needs a hood prop

Someone clearly failed with installing the ic piping will fix l8r. I took delivery 30 min ago.

What I have done based on other threads I have read prior to purchasing the car is to check the cat and see if it is clogged, make sure the waste gate actuator is moving freely, check turbine for play, look for leaks in the system and make sure it isn't detonating.

What I have done;

I have checked for leaks

There is no shaft play

The wg actuator moves with a little force.

The only thing I can think of is if it's from the crap bov gone releasing all the charge pressure.

Any thoughts on what to do next or just thoughts on the car would be cool thanks for looking😈

Well many ways but I'm an audio engineer and I build and develop loudspeaker systems. As a side hobby I do car audio, graphics and window film. Also if you know what it is I have my FFL and a full machine shop at my desposal.

Do you have a wideband air/fuel ratio (AFR) gauge? If not, get one and install it before you go searching for boost.

After you've done that so you can properly monitor your AFR, you can go about trying to make it work the way it's designed to work. That looks like a Greddy kit which, while not the highest performance kit, is far better than an eBay kit in terms of reliability.

Oh, and install an air filter, FFS.

Yea I have the aem wide band uego. I've got a filter on the way. That picture was 10 min after it was delivered to my house.

So update :
Fixed the winking light.

Have a filter coming in

I got pvc end caps so I can pressure test the system to find the suspected leak.

Ordered the extended plugs and upgraded pcv valve from flying miata.

All should be in by tomorrow so Sunday I will fix the sh** job intercooler and piping. Remove the bov for now (it's crap anyway). Put my new parts on test it and hopefully I'll hit 4.5 lbs!

I was going to give a very detailed reply but to each his own.

Having been burned myself taking on someone else's project I can only produce negative thoughts of the amount of money you'll be wasting on a 1.6L garrett turbo car. Cool it has an 'ok' turbo kit but your fuel and timing management aidz are dated. Crooked radiator guessing it's just wobbling there while the bad IC route blocks it from being mounted.

You could of started fresh with a 1.8L car and no turbo, seen the light and built a proper setup along the way. I feel you'll be fixing problems more than driving with this vehicle in particular.

You seem to be taking a correct approach though, so keep us updated on the progress.

I hear ya, however I know what I bought and know what I am getting into. It's a project car not a dd. So if it takes 6 months than so be it. It's a hobby car. When I fix this up if I really fall for miatas than I will go with a big boy set up. For now it's a silly toy to get my feet wet. If I do fall for the miata I will do a monster build with it and go crazy but for now it will be tons fun for 2k.

^yup. OP seems to have his head on straight. Nothing wrong with getting the car cheap and fixing the ghetto stuff to make it good. Sounds like the engine in healthy enough, and most of what you're fixing will take time and just a bit of money.

A lot of people seem to forget that you don't have to have the best/most ideal setup to have a ton of fun. Just look at Aidan's build. Kid spends a lot of time wrenching, but a lot of time beating the **** out of his car... with a ****-eating grin on his face.

But for the love of god don't swap a 1.6 for a 1.6.

I'm all for beating the **** out of your 1.6, but if you are going to put the swap effort in, find a 1.8.
