Default Been Poking Around A Bit (From TX)

Hello everyone, I'm kind of new here, joined a while back and been looking around.
I'm in North Houston, in The Woodlands area.
I have a 2000 Miata that I have had for about 4 years.
My goal pretty much is to make my car a tad faster. I hate being played with by Civics with a fart can, but I have no power.

So far I have been building a custom setup consisting of:
-TDO5 16G DSM Turbo with integrated 7psi actuator.
-Header
-Downpipe
-That Timing Retard Plate
-Fuel Pressure Regulator
-HKS SSBOV
-Intercooler + Piping

I really don't know what to use for the engine management yet. Any suggestions/ tips welcome, and I would love to meet some fellow Houston peeps.

Welcome to the Texas crew!

Your plan seems to be pretty sound. I think there should be a DIY PNP Megasquirt in your future. Of course I'm biased, though.

I'm on the Northwest side (cypress). You just missed the HMC meeting last Friday, but we have turbo Miata gatherings occasionally.

PNP MS is popular around here... So you will be able to get tons of advice and troubleshooting for it. Welcome aboard.

What kind of timing retard plate are you talking about?

Sorry, I meant the adjustable timing wheel from FM.
Lets see if I can get some pics to work.

Friggin' rich *** Woodlands people. Jk, we have some nice folks up here too.

I live on the north side of the lake, and work in Spring. Let me know if you'd like to meet for lunch sometime and talk turbos. I will spend the whole time trying to talk you into real engine management. A couple of guys have got the MegaSquirt up and running on your year, but there are other nice options as well, such as the Adaptronic.

Pretty soon you'll conquer your desire to dust the Civics and then not even look twice at them. I'm to the point now where I'm tired of the inflated ego Mustang GT drivers, and making a few upgrades that will me walking on all but next year's model.

Take care,

Damon

I'm not rich and neither is my neighbor lol.
Well it would be great to meet up and such. For some reason Canes Chicken comes to mind...
I won't be in town for another two weeks, but then I'm down for a meet and discussion for sure.
Yes, I can not stand the tools in the Mustangs Gt's, I'm thinking with 7psi to start I can take them, is that close?
Pretty much, eventually i'm hoping to be able to run with a Camaro SS or maybe be close around the Vettes.

Depends on the turbo, and you've got more displacement. I'm at 12psi, but on a 1.6L and a small turbo that runs out of steam up top. I'll get walked on if my tune is off.

No reason to stop at 7psi if you've got an intercooler and enough fuel. Car will be really quick starting around 10psi.

I've only played with one new Camaro. I kept up with him til 90mph when my top spontaneously came undone. I didn't see if it was a 6 or 8. Either way, my car is slow until I get a turbo that has some real mass flow rate.

Any Z06 and all C6 Vettes are untouchable until you exceed what the stock rods can handle. These cars aren't meant to be straight line monsters, but they'll take 98% of what's out there.

I'm sure I will get quickly addicted lol.
After putting this turbo on, i'm sure I will put the boost up to 10psi rather soon. Maybe 12...
I still have more homeworks to do to know exactly what else I need to buy.
I'm thinking for now I need a wideband O2, engine management, injectors, and the oil lines and such, then I can get to business?

Yes, definitely get engine management down FIRST.

Become accustomed to tuning, then put the turbo hardware on...profit.

See I've been looking at FM and Bell Engineering and the only options I am seeing are the Hydra and xede. I have come across the DIY PNP, but those are the only 3 I am aware of.

Adaptronic is a popular standalone for 99-00 cars. It's priced between the MS and Hydra, very capable and fairly easy to tune. I had one on my 99 when I was turbo'ed.

Check out our vendors' section for the Adaptronic (under Boundary) and the sticky at the top of the for sale thread for custom built Megasquirts from Braineak.
