Newbie in Central PA

Hi all. I have a 1995 Miata that I got earlier this year that I really enjoy. It's still got pretty low mileage (around 73k) and is in nice shape. So far I've done all the prerequisite maintenance, some chassis stiffening and suspension work, so my mind is now on power. I honestly have no idea what route I'm going to go with FI, but I'm here to observe and learn...keeping my mouth shut and ears open for a while. Thanks!

Welcome!!!
Harrisburg is about 1 hour from me.
73k is low mileage for a car that is 16 years old, especially a miata.
If you want to discuss a few things/ get some great ideas about the direction you want to take with your car, send me a PM and we'll meet up. Hell, I'll even let you drive my car. I guarantee you'll want to turbo your car within a week.

Welcome. Check out lvmoc.net if you like wine, cheese, & club runs.

thirdgen 10-31-2011 09:16 PM

Hey Tim, do you go on those runs? I always thought about cruising with them cause they're so local to me.

TurboTim 10-31-2011 09:39 PM

I haven't in a few years, since gas got silly expensive, we got other hobbies, and the other locals stopped being involved as much. We used to at least do the Pocono Run and the drive to survive. Back then, it was a nice variety of people & personalities.

thirdgen 10-31-2011 09:42 PM

I never did any runs with them, but I think they went right past my house. One day I was mowing my lawn and I saw about 40 Miata's go past my house. I live on a very popular scenic road to cruise on. In the summer time, it is a Harley/ crotch rocket/ vette cruisers hot spot.

RedCarmel 10-31-2011 10:00 PM

Thanks all!

Thirdgen: I'll definitely take you up on that offer! We're currently in the processing of moving into the the state and trying to close on some property here in the next month. Once the dust settles on that I would love to experience what you've got going on with your setup. I might try to avoid that oil usage, though ;) So far my only experience with turbo miatas have been limited to taking a few minute ride in FM's Igor around their track in Colorado. That's not enough to tell me if I like a turbo or supercharger (I know, that's a dirty word around here) better for my "needs".

Turbotim: Thanks for the heads up on the local club. Fun runs are nice, but I'll be especially interested if they do technical events too.

TurboTim 10-31-2011 10:21 PM

I'm sure they do. There's a few turbo, supercharged, and V8 guys there, and they do track events too in addition to the wine runs. The old FM guy, Ken Hill/Oracle Tuning, is also a member.

have you ever been to Centralia?

TurboTim 10-31-2011 11:03 PM

Yep.

thirdgen 10-31-2011 11:39 PM

What did you see Centralia on the history or discovery channel? Centralia is right near where I hill climb (dirtbikes), and about 40 minutes from my house.

pusha 10-31-2011 11:42 PM

nah, my buddy went to Duquesne and he'd go to that area to find wild mushrooms.

RedCarmel 10-31-2011 11:59 PM

Its kind of a spooky place to visit. Another place worth going in the area is known as whaleback. Its a really neat geologic formation that's worth a visit if you're into that sort of thing.

thirdgen 11-01-2011 03:35 AM

Wild Mushrooms near me usually grow in cow shit.
I never heard of whaleback. Some landmarks near me include: the bake oven knob, the pinnacle, the mahanoy city wind farm, numidia drag way. I'm right smack dab in the middle of all that noise.

you probably have to be a nerd to appreciate it.

Thanks for joining, RedCarmel!

So it says that the whaleback is on private property in one of those links, how angry do the owners get if people go climb on it? If i ever went to check it out, i would have to go walk on it and see.

RedCarmel 11-01-2011 01:51 PM

I was there years ago so I don't remember the specifics, but I don't recall any sort of barrier or even posted signs. It's pretty well traveled by many different folks. It's owned by a mining company so I don't think they care as much as an individual landowner.

The pictures don't do it justice. The scale is pretty amazing when you're there in person.
