NOOB Alert: Chris from Greece!!
Hello everyone,
First of all, English is not my mother language, I am sorry if I make some minor (or major) mistakes in grammar, please bear with me. My name is Chris (short of Christos, Greek name meaning the one who is useful) and have been a stalker of this forum for over 7 years and eventually decided to bite the bullet and join since I just started moding my Miata performance wise. I am a systems engineer specializing in networking and hardware. Have also some programming knowledge in python and C# as I design custom monitoring systems for server rooms and networks since 2017. The car is a daily driven 2003 Mazda Miata(duh!) or MX-5 as it is being called in Greece with the "Sporty" package, meaning bigger brakes, 6 speed transmission etc. and the BP6D 1.8 VVT engine. Car was bought stock and since then has had a full suspension refresh + the installation of tein street advance z coilovers. A K&N air filter along with a twin exit muffler and MS3 Rev-built ECU that found really cheap locally. Non performance mods include white enkei mazda wheels,a custom built immobilizer unit based on Arduino mini with a fingerprint sensor which (thankfully) works really well with the MS3, some rewiring of stuff that previous owner payed with and left as a mess and custom built 7" display based on a watercooled odroid xu4 running Android 8 for multimedia purposes. For all of you that got bored with the text, here is a set of pics from my ride to say thanks for taking the time to read it. :D https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7a05e64324.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9f5eb9de1a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a01aef033b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8eef0c1663.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8b753b2dd8.jpg |
Welcome to the forum. What are your plans for adding a turbo?
|
Thanks sixshooter, my goal is to reach eventually a healthy and reliable 200-220 hp at the wheels. Only 3 requirements are:
1) Being able to hit full boost by 3-3.5k RPM 2) Minimum spool time 3) Almost everything has to be done in a DIY manner Correct me if I am wrong but based on my research, it is pretty "easily" achievable either with a rotrex c30-74 SC or a GT2860. |
Rotrex won't make any power at 3.5k.
If you only aspire to reach 250whp or less a 2560 will give you more power in the lower RPMs than the 2860. And it will be more responsive and quick. A 2560 can make twice the torque of a rotrex at 3k RPM just by being at full boost already. |

Not an expert of course but from what I read it seems that the 2860 would run lower boost levels for the same target hp. Also at, let's say, 6-7k will the 2560 work efficiently or is it going to just spin around and produce just heat? |

I know, the only reason I mentioned the rotrex is that it is an option for safe 200hp, which sounds really nice.

Think this will be likely the turbo I will buy. I'm aiming for similar power as you. |
Have been following Bofi racing for a long time. Tbh, I am really tempted to just pull the trigger on that turbo right now.
Have you checked https://www.kage-uk.com/ ? Α friend of my, with a 2003 1.6, just purchased a full turbo kit from them. Will wait till it arrives and check build quality. Seems pretty promising and leans on the cheap side to be fair. |
That looks like a Malian kit; it has been discussed before in here. TBH I would save a bit more and go for a quality cast manifold.

I would be interested to know what the quality is like myself, please let me know when you have a had a look, I think a pretty good kit could be put together using some parts from bofi and kage!

How did you do the immobilizer, sounds really interesting?
If you can share details, of course. Also, have you picked up the MS3 on a secondhand goods website or through local community? I am also based in Europe so looking to get one for cheap. Good luck with the build. |
A 2860 / 2871 will make more horsepower at a lower pressure but it seemed like you were interested in the only going to 250 horsepower so it would make more sense to get a turbo that would spool earlier and give you more power under the curve.

Good luck with the build. I got the MS locally (bought from a friend who was reverting to stock) but I have found bofi to have some good deals from time to time in Rev built MS3s and the MS3 Mini.
