Default Newbie to the boards.

OK, so first and foremost, My names Kyle, and second, I dont own a Miata (Would love to have a first or second Gen). I actually drive a 1988 Mazda 323 Turbo, which shares alot of similarities in the block as the first Gen Miata's. It has a itty bitty 1.6l B6T factory Turbo, and at the present moment is undergoing a heart transplant. The original motor has 220k on the clock, compression had sunk to about 100psi across the board, andon my last trip I took it on (to Seattle from Portland), the oil pump gasket blew on me.

The new engine is going to be fully built by mistake sort of speak. I was only meaning for a simple stock rebuild, but things got out of hand fast. Problems arose that could not be fixed with OEM or Aftermarket OEM style parts, forcing me to go heavy duty. My pistons and rods are a good example.

Anywho, I wont bore you with the specifics unless your interested.

Myself, I live in Troutdale OR. and work for Ron Tonkin Mazda as a Technician. Im no noob when it comes to Mazda's, ive been driving them most of my driving career. Im hoping to find myself a miata here in the next few years (first year will be spent paying off the CC after this monster engine build).

Anyways, Hi!

Wow, that was quick!

New toys and current status. Plus some snap shots of the engine build.

The adjustable coil overs aren't installed yet, but everything will hopefully be done a drivable in the next week or two.

Nice progress. Not very often you see one of those with the work you've done to it. Good stuff

Thanks! Its been a fun project this far. Needs paint bad. Ile make a list of the current status here later.

I do want to ask, has anyone had experience with SuperTech Miata forged pistons? Im using 8:8:1 pistons with Eagle H beams, and I did see a thread of someone who killed one of these pistons, but I think it was due to a lack of communication, or even brains on the retailers part.

Thanks again!

There are tons of people on here with supertecs. I think a search in the engine performance and build thread section will net you good results.

lol, the trucks my roomates. its a 65' C10. We just dropped a freshly rebuilt Corvette High Performance 300 Horse 327 in it with a rebuilt 3 spd overdrive. Looks like a truck even Sanford and son wouldn't drive, but it goes like a rape dape. My roomy also has a beautiful 64' Chev Impala SS with alot of rare and fun factory goodies.

My build is including:
-SuperTech Forged pistons 8:8:1
-Eagle Rods
-New/Ground B616 Crank (Original one suffered the dreaded crank wobble)
-Mazdaspeed Oil Pump (30% more Flow)
-New HLA's
-CorkSport Adjustable Cam Gears
-Gates Racing blue Timing Belt
-ARP Head Studs
-Full Cometic Gasket set Including Cometic Metal Head Gasket
-Mazdaspeed GTX Clutch
-Mazdaspeed Motor Mounts (already installed, but wth)
-Rebuilt G Trans with 626 5th Gear swap

And of course all the usual stuff, New ACL bearings, seals, etc.

I also picked up a Prosport Premium boost gauge.
I will be picking the engine up on Tuesday from the Builder (Finally!) so I can continue getting this thing done. I miss my little turbo sedan!!

As the car sits in whole (with the new motor Specs):
-Motegi Rims with BFGoodRich rubber
-HKS TT
-Autometer Boost and A/F gauges
-Clear Euro Headlights with JDM Mazda corners
-HID's
-Factory Digital Dash (Jammin Digital stuff out of the 80's, Woo!)
-323 GTX Factory Recaro seats
-Lowered on Intrax springs and Tokico's (Soon to be the Eibach Adjustables)
-KVR Rotors and Pads
-14" Slim Fan
-95' Ford Escort Power Moonroof (Stock is a manual crank Panel sunroof...and it broke)
-HKS SSQV/Turbo XS RFL/Turbo XS Type H (All Depending mood and driving style, easily changed)
-Chipped Corksport ECU to Adjust the fuel map to handle 16 PSI.
-Kenwood Head Unit, Polk Front speakers, BlowChUnKs in rear
-Civic short Throw Shifter
-OEM JDM Mazda Badge's

There is probably a few more im forgetting, but ile add those later. There is also more Ide like to do to it.

Durring disassembley

Heres an update on the progress. I finally got her right where I need her.

Purrdy new and shiny B6 Turbo motor.

Heres a heart warming site. Theres a motor in my kitchen!

Out with the old and dirty...

...in with the new and shiny!

And Skadoosh!

At this point, things started turning bad. My Stupidity and ADD kicked in to high gear. I gave my engine builder the Adjustable cam gears to install, and when I got the engine back, he had the exhaust cam lined up using the timing degree marks on the adjuster instead of the "E" and Arrow. This was a very easy mistake, as I would have done the same thing. It was rather confusing. Anyways, Mechanically, the engine was properly timed. While the engine was in my Kitchen, I decided to change the position of the cam gear so that the "E" was timed right, as I had "assumed" the Cam Dowel was in the right slot on the gear. Wrong. This had me playing guessing games for near 5 days as to why the engine wouldnt fire up. I finally sat right up in bed out of a sound sleep one night and litterally said outloud "I know what I did wrong!" and come to find out I was right. I pulled the cam gear off and put it on the right slot and timed it up.

And as she sits right now. Smooth, quiet and powerful.

The more I break in the motor, the more power I can feel in the engine. It just keeps wanting to go, but I know I need to control myself durring the first 1000 miles or so.

Anyways, thanks alot to the some of you who helped me out with a few of my quirks. Im very happy to have my little "Toybo" back on the road.

For what its worth, it looks like we might be taking in a Beautiful 2002 Yellow SE Miata with the factory body kit I believe and the stock, really nice Enkie alloys. Was a beautiful car and would look great in my driveway. If not, im still looking for the perfect one to come my way.
