Ohio noob

Hey guys my names Michael, I'm located in Alliance Ohio. I picked up a 160k 1991 Mx5 that needs some love.. Basics needs - a top (hardtop would be great), fenders, heater core, clutch and alignment. I got it with a 93 engine installed, the stock 91 suffered from short nose crank syndrome (that motor came with the car also). It has stock lsd, I jacked the car up and spun a wheel to find out.

I joined to learn from your mistakes and hopefully help others from mine. I just want to build a car to have fun with. I don't race or drift just drive back curvy roads and push the limits a little. Thinking about energy suspension bushings, race springs, tie bars, drag radials, at least a roll bar (I'm a single parent safety is key) then boost for around 200 whp? I have a low budget so I need to research and be sure before I spend.

Currently I am removing the parts that need replaced, cleaning the carpet/interior, reading a lot trying to plan out the build before buying parts.

How it looked when I got it.

Welcome. There's a few Ohio guys on here, myself included. I have no idea where Alliance is, but I'm not originally from Ohio...

What's the purpose of getting drag slicks? For the way you mentioned you might use the car it seems some sticky street tires would be enough.

Definitely do some more research before you spend any money.

What do you mean by race springs? and no on the drag radials, for the street RS3's

This is a great and proper introduction. You will be liked here if you keep this up. Welcome!

H&R Race Springs, they drop the car couple inches and have a stiffer spring rate.

I was going to run Falken Azenis RT-615 195/60R14 on Honda hx wheels. The rims are light and I hear good reviews on the tires. I do just drive on the road most of the time but would like to try a road course track day, drag strip and auto-x with these tires as well.

Thanks for posting, any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to MT. I'm from cincy

I had those h&r springs some time ago, thy lowered the car like 3" and where not much stiffer, you will bottom out all over the place. There are plenty of good write ups on suspension here, check them out first.

Welcome. I'm in C-Bus.

No on the springs....seek out some FM springs. You can often find them used for a reasonable price. I've bought several sets from $100 - $150.

leatherface24 02-18-2011 10:36 AM

H&R springs checking in as well but I cut my shit lol

I am definitely going to be reading up in the suspension sections before I buy. I cut my spring a lot back in the day, I want to try and avoid that this time around lol

Soloracer I come to C-bus a couple times a summer usually for car shows or events. Its a fun couple hour drive, it's nice to get away from home for a day or two.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

Welcome, Ohioian.

You're way too close to Mid Ohio to not do a track day.

Nice! Come check out the Louisville SCCA. I may see you up there.
