Overdue Intro: New guy in Indiana, Track focused.

Hello everyone, I live in southern Indiana and have been around the fiddling with car scene for a while now. Last year I bought my first Miata and have owned 4 since. One is now a 1.6 DD and weekend warrior at the local SCCA autocross and occasional rallycross events. The other is a rusty Michigan bred M edition that was transformed into a track car for the Chumpcar World Series. The other 2 were parts or too nice to mess with and sold, for me it's generally function > form. Looking forward to contributing to the forums and sharing my experiences at the track, I've learned a lot in this past year so thank you!

Of course the username is a jest, to each their own

I was ready for eggplants until i saw this.

Glad to se your mind is in the right place.

Dillon, I'm actually about to move to Novi for 6 months starting in September. I've been to Gingerman, can you recommend any other good tracks around? I've been recommended Waterford Hills but don't know much about it.

I prefer my eggplant fried so as best to eliminate all possible nutrients, makes it harder to fit in the race suit though

Never been on either tracks. But i did go to Waterford Hills once to watch. It's an okay track i guess. I don't like how if you go off, or hit the rumble strips you might as well close your eyes and pray. At the end of the back straight there is rocks, big rocks.

Here we are crossing the finish line at Gingerman earlier this year after a 7 hour race, Thing3 Racing

West central indianaSafe place with lots of runoff room just in case...

Yessir, Putnam is my home track we have been using for testing. You go out there often? I run with 10/10ths and usually pit right before the track entrance at the end of the pits. Hopefully the new ownership will pave it, I like what they've done so far. I thoroughly enjoy catching the big horsepower cars in the field after they blew by me on the straight!

I have taken full advantage of that nice runoff on occasion.

We'll have to meet up once I get to town, what do you primarily do with your Miata?

slammed200 08-14-2013 11:07 AM

Harold, Nice lines through there, I take it you've been before :)

Let it sit in the garage on jack stands.

I should be getting my built engine back this weekend.
It's mainly a fun car, i am to poor to wreck it on a track. We do a lot of trips (tail of the dragon every October) tunnle of trees, Hell, westside, up north. Or just cruise around and pick on muscle cars. There are quite a few turbo miatas in SE Michigan, i've even got two in my garage currently. I'd say more than 10 locally that i know of.

The Michigan Miata group on FB is pretty good.

When's the next track day at Putnam you guys will be going to? I still have no tach/speedo so I'm not sure I will run, but I'd still like to hang out and get a few rides maybe.

If you've seen a emerald '99 with little tupperware rolling around Columbus, that's my neighbor who works at Cummins.

There's an Indiana Miata FB group, but it's mostly ricers. Their idea of a 'track day' is drifting.

What do you need to fix your setup, I may have the parts around. Next Putnam day will probably be September 21/22 with 10/10ths, plenty of awesome cars to ride in and I wouldn't mind having you in the passenger bucket at all.

Small world, I park next to him also working for Cummins! I'm in the Indiana group, very minimal interest in racing but there are some and it's a good local source for parts since the local yards don't seem to have any Miatas.

I'll check out the Michigan group, get in on any events you guys put on. I have never done tail of the Dragon or the others, but Hell was fun. I used to take test vehicles out there when I worked for GM, cruising in the zebra camo'ed ZR1 prototype back in the day was quite a rush!

Let me know if you need a hand wrenching the engine bay back together when the engine arrives. What's the goal for it?

Erat 08-14-2013 01:55 PM

High MPG's. And extreme reliability at or around 300-350hp with 8200+rpm limiter. Plus have full AC full interior and completely working correctly as it should car.

I host a fall Dragon run. Well, i'm hosting it this year. It's October 2nd-6th. You're more than welcome to join if you want. More info That goes for everyone too.

I'm not exactly sure yet, I replaced the speed sensor but still have no tach/speedo and I'm still getting the VSS code. When I stop being lazy I will grab my neighbors ECU to see if that is the culprit, otherwise my last guess is the cluster itself. If you have one for a '99, I'll gladly take it off your hands (I want to try this anyway). If it's the ECU I'll be getting an MS3 from Reverant soon, if it's neither the ECU or cluster then I'll be stumped. Either way I should be ready by September.

Yeah I don't really mind since I have minimal interest in facebook. It's good for some clubroadster-esque laughs though, "check out my racelands, just installed them pretty sweet."

Won't be able to help you there, I deal in old school NAs only!

Thanks, don't go as much as i would like, 0 for the year so far but i like that track and the people that run in 10-10 motorsports is great (exept for some of the slower porshe guys that don't like to get pased by a Miata).
I am SLOWLY building a 99 sport with a brog warner that will be much better track day car and street but looks like it will not be done until next year at this rate so i have been playing with the old SC NA

I like owning Miatas in Indiana because it's so flat and straight. Way easier to drive that way.

zero415 08-14-2013 07:54 PM

Yes, flat straight, but there are some towns that have some curves if you like to cruise the back roads.
