Default Back again! Couldn't help myself

Hey guys,

I used to have an 03 NB miata, with not much done to it. I ended up selling it for a more comfortable car (my GF at the time was living an hour from me, and the commute there and back all the time was killing me).

I got married, and my wife lives here with me now. So my G35 got vandalized and they ended up payment me out about 7K, so I went out and bought what I wanted, and it was a MSM.

I was debating between this MSM (100K, all stock) versus a BEGI S1 powered 10AE. However the cost of the 10AE and the MSM was about 2500 (guy with the 10AE wanted more) but had no info on the car, sans the turbo kit (couldn't answer anything about engine management, or anything, just knew it was a BEGI S1), however the fellow the MSM knew virtually everything about the car, and he also did a lot of SCCA.

Anyway, so I am back, and I will be lurking some more. I know people say the stock turbo and engine management suck, but I'll probably be buying MS first before anything major (I plan to do intercooler, downpipe, and exhaust) there's a fellow that sells an intake that relocates the MAF as well too. Before I go MS. Fortunately enough, my car doesn't bog like most people say.

Either way, I'm happy to be back!

so your car does not feel sluggish before 4500 and then finally lurch forward like all MSM's? I find that hard to believe

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't feel that way to me. But you also have to keep in mind that I have never driven another MSM.

The only time it feels weird is if I'm sitting right at 0 on the boost gauge. When I'm doing high load but low cruise (like climbing a hill without going into boost).

For a BOG test I would start a slow 40mph roll in 5th gear and do a WOT pull up to 5.5 or 6k rpm. Should be violent once in the upper range.

Boost gauge, check

Do you have a wideband in mind? Innovate? AEM?

I'd get the wideband o2 along with the megasquirt and familiarize yourself with air/fuel ratios etc.

Get the PnP megasquirt for the MSM, profit

Do you own a cat ?

I've used AEM in the past, but this time around I'll be going with an Innovative unit, since they have one that works as a wideband display and turbo timer. Keep everything nice and together.

Can you add a little more to the "violent"? Does it jerk? Or what does it do exactly?

the torque onset is mild before about 4500-5000, then it suddenly "opens up" and pulls hard.

I have yet to drive an MSM that doesn't have this on stock ecu, and that includes the ones running the FM signal modifier doodad.

the only "real" fix is a proper ECU to replace the stocker.

it always interests me when people say theirs doesn't do this, I always wonder if that's actually true or they just think the terrible stock mapping is OK

I've had a chance to test drive four different MSMs when searching for my Miatas...

One actually ran decently without the dreaded bog.
But. It has about 32k mile on it.

The rest ranged from bad to downright horrible.

Nice! Yeah I don't really notice the bog in my msm as well. Maybe my ***-dyno is off or something.

The latter may be the case. I mean if anything, it does feel like there's a lot of timing retard in the lower RPM's, but it doesn't bog. When I hear "bog" I think of a car running out of gas or something along those lines.

It doesn't matter really. I'm slowly saving up for MS anyway.

Okay guys, you were right. I did my front mount intercooler, and downpipe yesterday, and NOW It's really apparent. The power comes on super late, I hate to say it, but it feels like an angry vtec now :(

Someone on the other site suggested you do some silly band-aid "fixes" like pulling the TPS and installing bigger injectors.

Don't do those things.

Don't plan to. Sounds like a waste of money. I plan to do bolt on's and save up money on the side to go MS.

Right now the car doesn't feel as bad as one would think. Fortunately, I've got about 300 saved already, but I want to do intake mods to fix all the problems with the car now.
