Phoenix noob love Miatas and women

So after years of saying I can't drive a Miata I rescued a 1992 classic red with the wrong transmission and a rod hanging out the side of the block.

Moving backwards I then pulled the BNC 1.6 and swapped in a $50 SNC 1.6 from a manual transmission 1990 that had keyway damage which I loctite repaired!

Now that the car runs reasonably well the next logical step is TURBO!!!

I'd love to swap in a stick but my wife won't let me :giggle::loser:

Gunna do some driftz and stretch the tires?

zoomazoomzoom 04-16-2014 12:20 AM

I'm not sure what I want from this car, I know it needs more power. Right now I just want to drive with the top down and be able to merge into traffic without almost getting hit.

Two of my other 4 cars are sticks so I'm okay with the Miata being an auto. It would be more enjoyable as a stick but theres a lot going on driving it so auto is okay. I had the motor out so I missed my opportunity to right the wrong. When the motor fails I have 2 spare Big Nose Cranks, the BNC oil pump, a spare head and the rear main seal.

Tell your wife to learn to drive stick, or find yourself a boyfriend that can.

You will get used to that with me, that and my terrible grammer and spelling ( did you see that I also swapped in a 1990 SNC that had keyway damage!!!)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1397795075

I have 5 cars, 2 are autos 3 are sticks..... not bad odds. Two months ago it was 3 and 3.

Who knows how long the 148,000 mile automatic will last with 5-8 psi!

Here is a history of the fun cars I have owned.

Current Daily Driver, its a 1999 Altima SE Limited with a 5spd manual transmission. I would like to eventually turbo charge it, 160 hp stock and 2800 lbs, adding 6 psi should be plenty will run bandaids, MSD timing retard box + FMU. I bought this car for $600 with a broken timing chain. Took the motor down to rotating assembly in the car and rebuilt. I have 170 psi across the 4 cylinders with a factory compression of 178.

My daily driver up until I almost lost my license in it was a 2011 Jaguar XF Supercharged. I miss this car all day everyday but I would be on the bus if I had kept it.

75 mph - 160 mph took about 18 seconds, 0-60 was traction limited but about 4 seconds, 1/4 mile was 12.7 again traction limited. It dynoed at 448 RWHP bone stock. My only mod was Michelin Pilot Super Sports. The speedo went up to 185 mph and the car would bury it in 6th. 0-185+ was under 30 seconds of WOT. I had the car for 2 years and never got used to the acceleration it was unsettling how fast it added speed.

At the track vs GTO I ran a high 12 he ran a mid 13.

before the Jag I did 7 years and 127,000 miles in a 2007 G35 Sedan... first year for the VQ35HR motor that made 306 hp and redlined at 8,000 rpm. This car was so much fun at the drag strip because it ran 14.0 @ 102 all night long and the Mustang GT (pre Coyote) ran 14.3-14.5. I killed them every weekend for the first 3 years I owned it. I also spend some time getting a PRO Autosports unrestricted license and raced at Firebird racetrack 4 times a year. I ran Kumho V710 slicks in 275/40/17 all 4 corners mounted to Mustang Bullet 17x9 rims. Nothing ever broke this was a fantastic car.

This picture is from the day I sold it.. I like to keep my cars clean

one of my first trips to the track vs a 2006 Z. The chatty guy in the passenger seat owned the Z and could not beleive I kept beating him so I let him ride along if he promised to tape the race. .213 was my reaction time, which is slow for me.

Before the G35 I had a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4 door with a Hemi. It ran 16's when I bought it and 12.8's when I sold it. I made 380 hp on the motor and ran a 2 stage nitrous kit, 75 hp 1st stage off the go pedal and 125 hp 2nd stage off a momentary switch I would zip tie to the steering wheel at the track. In 2006 I took 1st place in the Bill Luke Hemi Shootout at Speedworld in the trophy class on the motor.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1398312047

At about 57k miles I finally broke the transmission. 4th gear clutch packs came apart and took out a few of the other sets. I rebuilt the Dodge 545RFE myself using a Suncoast upgraded Koleen friction and steel set. I already ran a Suncoast 2800 stall torque converter, transgo shift reprogrammer and had modified the pump using a resistor to always spin faster than it needed. I had a deeper transmission pan and a temp gauge.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1398312047

The day after I rebuilt the transmission cylinder #3 ate its ring land. I swapped out the cylinder, rod, bearing and rings and traded it in for the G35.

One of the exhaust systems I built was long tube headers and glass packs... didn't make enough back pressure to pull 3rd gear :-( Sounded fan-diddly-tastic doing it though

Welcome to the forum.

We have a couple of drag racers around here but they are in the minority because, well, it's a Miata.

zoomazoomzoom 04-24-2014 12:22 PM

I'm thinking to buy another automatic and tear it down. I do business with Hughes performance they could build me a strong miata torque converter that stalls around 3,000 rpm. I can vastly improve shifting speed and harshness via the valve body springs and increasing line pressure using a resistor. Probably can get sun coast to cut me some Koleen friction clutches.

Probably would make the auto a lot more fun!
