Probably About Time

Greetings, I have been reading and searching this site for about two years with the interest of adding a DIY Turbo system to my 96 MX5. DIY route for the enjoyment of designing and building a system.*

I have had the 96 for about four years and have slowly been making improvements along the way. When I first purchased it, it had a pinging problem on regular gas and I could not retard the timing to reduce the ping. Turns out that the timing belt was off by two teeth. New timing belt correctly installed corrected the Ignition timing issue. Still had pinging issues on hot days even though no over heating issues. Replacement of the stock radiator with a Godspeed all aluminum unit helped some. DIY coolant reroute with a 180°F thermostat was even more effective. I probably need to remove the Head and check for carbon build up in the future. I'll probably wait until I pull the engine to replace all the leaking seals (I Hate oil leaks) and upgraded clutch replacement.

LC1 installed about a year ago. I used it's output which simulated a narrow band O2 sensor for the ECU input and have loss about 6 mpg. I recently completed building a MS I and installed it in a parallel mode (dpdt switches to allow switching between the MS I and stock ECU). I chose parallel to retain OBII functionality with an installed ScanGauge. Now I am working on a tune.

Still have to decide on which turbo (probably a china charger), manifold and down pipe, fuel injectors. Intercooler already purchased.

Dave
