Rx7 turbo

Hello, I have a 1992 miata na and I'm looking to turbo it. I came across a pretty good deal, which is a s4 t2 turbo off of an 87 rx7. My question is is there any manifold I can buy that will straight bolt on to this, or will I have to have a shop fab up a manifold and downpipe. I'm new to miatas and to turboing(not to supercharging though) any answer would help thanks!

What's an s4?

Turbos are cheap. Pick one because it is the right one for the powerband of the engine and has common flanges and not weird ones.

Ok, and sorry I'm not quite sure of the s4. Also do you think it would be wise of me to just buy a complete turbo kit or try to piece together most of it. My budget is pretty low too.

What's your budget?

I want to try and keep it under 2k. That turbo is going for 100 bucks, which makes room for the megasquirt.

2k is going to be pretty tight. You're talking about having the turbo, exhaust, i/c, i/c pipes, BOV, boost gauge, wideband, 1.8L, Torsen, etc. all fit into $1k.

S4 is the '86-88 RX-7. The turbo was only offered in '87 and '88 (as S4 models). S5 was '89-'91.

They are all 2nd gen RX7s. The S5 was a minor model change.

The 2nd gen rx7 turbos are really wonky with weird flanges and sizing.

Your life will be much easier if you chose a much more conmon turbo with a much more common inlet and outlet flange.

Read impossible in your budget for a reliable setup.
Sure, you can turbo your car for that much, but you will spend more money and have much more down time in the long run than if you just save up and buy a good kit from the start.

After deciding for a few weeks, I'll just save up for a little more while and buy a Shanghai s kit. I've never installed a turbo before, but would feel a lot more confident doing it knowing I have all the pieces to do it in front of me.

Forget shanghai, save for MK Turbo setup. Better for similar money.

I would't say everything about my setup is better. The turbo is definitely a better match for the miata, and mine comes with a full 3" exhaust. The Begi cast manifold I will say is better then what I offer.

I'm really liking your setup for that price. Does it come with everything I would need besides bigger injectors, ECU, and oil pan tap?

sixshooter 10-19-2015 10:00 PM

You still need intercooler and piping, but that's just a cheap ebay kit away from being all you need there.

What sixshooter said. Basically you have to come up with your own IC and piping, injectors, ECU, clutch.
