Stuck.
Well, I'm at a cross road.
I currently own a 2000 special edition Miata, sitting on Megan's, work equip 01's, garagestar rollbar, wrapped in brown. But, finding myself pulled back to a NA, and wanting to boost one. My question is, what should I do. is it "easier" to achieve 200 whp with a NA, or NB. I have read extensively and all over, and it goes back and forth between people saying 1.6's handle boost better, and then 1.8's do. I'm pretty drawn to 94's because 1.8, and before they went OBDII Kinda lost, I really do enjoy NA's a lot, and then get into the mindset of "alright I'm gonna get a NA, I like them better than nb's" then i look at my car and I get the pre break up emotions of "but wait, we've been through so much, let's work things out" I've just decided to have you guys decide for me :) I could try to sell and possibly purchase something on this forum or even trade. Or, I could boost my car. But, there would be more potential / easier on my wallet if I were to sell this and buy a NA. HELP. |
If it were me, I'd move out of Commifornia first... then turbo whatever your heart desires.
|
Doesn't matter. 200 whp will be easy on either a 1.8 NA or NB. Don't think about the 1.6, they do not hold boost better in any way.

Emissions would not be an issue cause I have a few people I can go to. I was just wondering what would be easiest to boost, but those are good points about the 6 speed and lsd. My cars in good shape, just a leak I have to fix. But thanks for the response guys, I probably will end up keeping my car and boosting it.

nb is in every way superior to na for power and performance.
the only reason to choose na is if you like the looks/styling of them or want/need pre-obd2 |
Isn't there a few hundred extra pounds in the NB? My 2001 NB (SE trim) is 2455 without hardtop, or any weight reduction.
Or is the weight penalty negated by better handling from a stiffer chassis? |
Maybe with the tow hitch and full tank of gas, but otherwise they're 2350 or thereabouts for the sport with the 6sp and all the bracing. So maybe 150-200 more than a NA?

Then you should for sure sell the 2000 and buy 94 then source and swap a 1.8, 6 speed and 3.9 torsen into it. You should also pull the fenders to have the room for bigger tires like and NB. You may want to consider getting rid of the NA headlights to have more room like the NB. If you are feeling it maybe source and swap a superior NB subframe into your NA..... |
And then wiring/trigger system, and chasiss bracing, and...
|
ohhh hohohoho, I see what you guys are doing!
|
Regardless of the fact that you guys are roasting me, it's pretty funny. Thanks for the responses tho guys
|
That's the thing: despite being a bit funny it's actually 100% true.
Go browse all the build threads and pay attention to how many NB parts how many NA owners install onto their NA's. My guess would be 90% of NA's have at least 30% NB parts. Make your own conclusions |
People should start building NAs the way they build Exocets ... with NB "skateboards" :)

Put your OEM undertray back in.

Pretty sure I saw that thing on CL for a very long time.
For some obscenely high price. And also some "warning" ads from some other guy saying that it's a ripoff and you're trying to flip it for several thousand more than you bought it for. lol That color is not common, so I highly doubt it's a different car |
Undertray delete is a pretty good indication you aren't very knowledgeable about these cars.

i remember that actually, but I didn't get it off that person, i actually bought it off my coworker a few months ago, for pretty cheap actually. He traded a beat up 240 for it, didn't like how small it was and sold it to me. I do remember it being up for like 7 grand tho lol.

The paint is in great condition, it is included in one of the pictures. This car's been featured in a lot of car pages on social media. -6 speed with torsen LSD -Professionally done wrap, to preserve the paint and to change it up. - clutch, timing belt, all other belts, valve cover gasket, head gasket, new pads and rotors all around, coolant flush, cleaned and surfaced: throttle body, upper and lower intake manifolds, egr valve, spark plugs, coil pack and a few other things to make it run as healthy as it is now. Recently just did front main seal and cam seals. As they were leaking. -custom garage star type 3 rollbar, with custom powder coat paint matching the mahogany under the wrap. (Planned on taking wrap off) -hardtop that is paint matched with the mahogany as well (very rare), bolted down with Garagestar brackets with security bolts -Megan racing track series coilovers -k&n carb legal cold air intake -custom exhaust with muffler delete and custom resonator, car has a deep tone that's not too loud but nice. -work equip 01 wheel with brand new toyo proxes, more aggressive offset with spacers as well. -jass performance vintage style side mirrors (have original mirrors, but are scratched up from storage) -nrg quick release wooden wheel with nrg hub -mishimoto weighted shift knob -Bluetooth head unit, jbl 2 ways in the doors, with a 10 inch kicker sub and amp. Sounds awesome even with the windows down going 80. Cons: -Cracked windshield -head units display sometimes cuts in and out but the sound stays normal, think it's the ground wire. -airbag light flashes because a resistor was not installed when the steering wheel was put on. -driver side window works normal, just the guides are a little off. I'll show you how to close it. It works fine, you just gotta roll down a tiny bit once all the way up cause it goes about 2 cm too far.
