From Subaru to Mazda...

Hey all,

Just wanted to introduce myself...

I'm coming from the Subaru crowd and have a pretty well known car in that community. After recently driving my Brothers' 2001 SE Miata with a few upgrades, I fell in love and just had to have it.

I bought it from him, and I'm in the process of making it a daily driven track car.

Hope to see some fellow owners in the TX area :)

My sn on NASIOC is Paulie.

As far as my plans with the car...

I already took the extreme building approach with my Subaru, in that everything was carefully and methodically done to the fullest for what I was trying to achieve. It took me 4 years to build that car, so with the Maita, I wanted something a little more mainstream. I liked the fact that Flying Miata had just about everything I wanted and could sort me a finished product in house that met my needs.

So I drove it there (awesome drive btw on US HWY 550) a few weeks ago and it's getting the following:

FMII Turbo kit w/upgraded options, 3" turbo exhaust, etc
All the chassis bracing (Butterfly brace, Frog Arms, Cannon brace)
All the cooling upgrades (Aluminum crossflow radiator, fan upgrade, oil cooler)
FM V-Maxx coilovers
Willwood front brake upgrade w/2 piece rotors and RS4 pads (already had the FM rotor upgrade in the rear w/RS4 pads)

And a TON of other little stuff, but that's the jist of it. Should be a lot of fun when I get it back :)

That makes two of us! Any good roads in this area?

^^^

Anyone can throw money at a car. IMO that takes all the fun out of it.

Did you do any of the work to your subaru or did you just pay to have everything done? I skimmed through the build but didnt get far.

I'd say 90% of us would rather have all that shit shipped to our house and take the next week of work off to install it all.

Not trying to hate on you bro, I just call it how I see it. You say you're a pretty big name in the subie community then come here to tell us how much money you've spent. Yawnn......:hustler:

Not offended at all. It's all good. I did some work to the Subaru, and had some done as well.

I agree that doing all the work yourself can be very gratifying, but as someone who has just retired after 20 years in the Air Force, I'd like to be able to actually enjoy these cars, not spend all day building them. It took me years to get my Subaru where it is, and right as I was finished, I went to Japan for 4 years and didn't get to enjoy it.

It's all about perspective, and from my perspective, I'd rather enjoy driving these cars then tinkering with them. I've been tinkering with autos for the last 25 years, and when I wasn't doing that, I raced R/C cars in Japan competitively. Hell, my stable of R/C stuff cost more than the Miata cost me, lol.

And I didn't say I was a big name in the subie community. I said I had a well known car, that's all. I only listed the mods to the Miata because someone asked...

Don't read into it man...it's not that serious :)

I agree with you. I actually get a certain satisfaction of tinkering, and enjoyed every minute of my past projects (not just the Subaru).

I guess I should have said that I also get a certain satisfaction of driving them as well, and that's the part that has been missing for me since I lived out of the country for so long. I figured with the Miata build, I'd just have it done so I can get to the driving enjoyment part that much faster :)

I'm just fucking around with you anyways. I know a lot of guys that would rather just have the car done in 2-3 weeks and pay for it rather than work on it for 5-6 years and barely drive it.

Well once you get it back and play with it some hopefully you'll be re-inspired to do some of that "attention to detail" work on it like you did on your bug eye. I'd love to have the extra cash to do a entire custom interior. Maybe one day.

Welcome. Looking forward to seeing the car once you pick it up and get crackin on it. Although you should have got a NA instead. :td:

The NAs are nice for sure, but I didn't realize that until after I bought my Brother's NB (who bought an NA also).

I think there is so much stuff you can do to the NAs that I'd be forever lost in those "details" you mentioned, ha ha. At least with what I have now, I can get to the actual driving part a little quicker :)

Speaking of getting lost in those "details", I tend to go overboard. Check out this guage project I had done a while back:

Not really. Plenty of space to open up the taps, though. Just be careful, some of the roads are greasy/sandy.

Nice bugeye, man that's badass.

Welcome. I daily a '05 OBXT. Lots of subaru daily driver's here.

fmowry 04-06-2011 08:00 AM

I'm a suby guy too. Major modded FXT -> mildly modded LegGT and stock OBXT.

I hear you on the driving the car rather than working on it. There's a thread in the Miata.net engine conversion section regarding post car-mod depression where some of us lose some interest AFTER we finish our projects. Truthfully I want to take a year off of modding/wrenching and just drive my car for the summer (after I finish it). But hey, I'm one of the older guys here too so I've had plenty of years to work on cars and not so much to enjoy them.

I actually might work on it this weekend. Gonna try and get the pan and swaybar done. Then it's just center console and maybe move my exhaust flex section.

18psi 04-06-2011 12:23 PM

Got an APS ss45 with supporting mods and e85 going onto my 08 FXT. Subaru power BRO's:D

pusha 04-06-2011 02:27 PM

Nice Subaru, bro. I've been considering a 2004 STI that a friend wants to get rid of but I couldn't handle NASIOC for more than like five minutes. I'd rather post on SupraForums again.

18psi 04-06-2011 02:33 PM

Every forum has their downfalls, and nazicock is no exception. Its a humongous forum so you have to take the good with the bad. If you filter out the hellaflush douchebag cocksuckers the forum will be 200% more tolerable

pusha 04-06-2011 02:50 PM

Why is it that when I drive my Z06, I get tried by all kinds of Subaru assholes with huge NASIOC and Monster stickers on their cars?

18psi 04-06-2011 02:56 PM

because they think their cars with shitty cobb stage2 is a highway monster lulz

And most of the ones being hypercritical cocks have shitbox cars. On TampaRacing.com some kid with a '94 Altima in his sig was threadcrapping a FS thread by a guy with an R32 Skyline GTR for asking $20k obo. I was like, WTF?

Wow, didn't know there were so many Subie owners here...

Guess it just proves one thing, we all have good taste!

Just got done shaking down the completed Miata. OMG!!! Fun is such an understatement. Not more than 30 minutes after the last bolt was tightened, I did a track day in Colorado with the Flyin Maita folks, and then drove it across the country to Atlanta for the Mitty - with zero issues.

The car has no ill habits at all. The best part is that everything that makes the Miata good in the first place is still there, except leveled up to the Nth degree. Balance, driving dynamics, it's all still there, in spades...

:)
