So, here's my intro post. I'm 6'4" and this is my first Miata, a '99 NB. I'm 31 years old and a hobbyist mechanic, welder, fabricator. I received this Miata as a partial trade toward a car I sold. Before I even drove the car I modified the floor pan, installed a racing seat, and built a turbo kit. Just a note, the bumper was that way when I got it.

uh... nothing. I sell software validation and verification engineering services for a living. So, unless you have a Boeing 737 I don't think I have anything to offer.

Thanks for the welcome.

weird. usually when people start machine gun posting in various threads its to up their post count to make a fs ad or pm someone. my mistake

details on your setup?

NordicSaab 08-17-2017 08:41 PM

Setup is a mish-mosh of parts.

FM Cast Manifold
3" SS downpipe, homebuilt
2" aluminum turbo piping
Unknown FMIC
Ebay BOV
AEM Failsafe UEGO/Boost gauge
ME221 ECU running auto tune with the AEM failsafe
Turbo is a T25 with a Nissan (SR20DET) hot side and Mistubishi (4g63) cold side.

I spent money where I felt like it mattered. Overall running really well at 8 psi. I have a couple of holes in my tune, but working to getting it running well.

18psi 08-17-2017 08:42 PM

pretty solid setup except for that ecu
but I'm sure it's still better than bandAIDZ so there's that

I don't get it... What's the issue with the ECU? I have used megsquirt, DSM Link, AEM, Etc. on past setups and the ME221 seems to be just as good.

On another note, If anyone is curious about the seat and mounting for me to fit here is a thread on GRM about it.

Welcome to the forum. What are your plans for the car?

NordicSaab 08-18-2017 07:53 AM

Plan is evolving.
I have this car, a e36 M3 Sedan, and a 1g Eagle Talon.

I would like to track the car. I think the seat configuration will allow me to pass tech, even at my height. So, the near term modifications list include:
- Hard Dog Ace Roll Bar
- Larger fuel injectors
- Oil Cooler
- Oil Temp and Pressure Gauges

Thanks for the welcome sixshooter. I used to live in Tampa and attended many FAST and Corvette club auto crosses. We have probably met at some point.

sixshooter 08-18-2017 08:03 AM

The Corvette club guys had the best events, were laid back, gave lots of runs, and had really high speed course designs.

A tip for taller guys that can make a ton of difference. There is a decent about of adjustment on especially the clutch pedal.
Lowering it so you don't have to lift your left foot improved my experience a lot when I was a new to this cramped cockpit.

Thanks for the info. If I had kept the stock seat and seat mounting points I would have tried this, but the seat install made leg room a non issue. My main concern now is torso length/height. I like the driving position in the car, but I still have some fear I will be above the "broomstick". Once I get the roll bar in I will find out.

sixshooter 08-18-2017 08:51 AM

Adding a little rearward tilt to the Kirkey seat helped the height issue for me. Then I added a spacer to the steering wheel to get it closer to my arms where I wanted it.

Skip the Ace, it's shorter than Hard Dog's other roll bars and made will weaker material besides. You want the Hard Core.

According to their website and the conversation I had with Harddog, it is the exact same height, diameter, and material as the hardcore. With the position of my seat, it is the only one that will work and be track legal. The other variants have a bracket that runs down the rear interior bulkhead. I am using this area for my seat.

This is something I have considered. It would require some rework of my mounting points, but I'm keeping it as an option. I think I might be good with my current configuration. RE: the steering wheel, I replaced the stock with a DPI QR and a Momo wheel. It added several inches of additional space.

Current Seating Arrangement. This was before I swapped out the wheel.

That look awesome. How's the comfort level?

Sorry for the delayed response. Just saw this. Comfort is very good now. Initially, the padding had no lumbar support. I went to a fabric store and got some 1" foam padding. I cut a 12" wide strip and superglued it where i needed support. Now it is just about perfect.

The only thing i would change if i did it again is rake the seat back another 10 degrees. It is a little to vertical, but not bad.
