Turbo Newbie Saying Hi
 

A little about my self... I'm 24, in school for automotive technology and about finished. I'm going to be getting married in two weeks, and I absolutely love this car (below).

What brings me here is this thing:

I want to turbo it in the future but it will be a slow process. Right now I am catching up on all the maintenance on it and fixing everything that is worn out.

I just got a free T25 off a SR for doing some work on a guys car, so I am going to rebuild that and base the build around that. So I will be doing a lot of research on here and other places and don't really see turbo being ready for a year to 2 years.( Mainly because I will more than likely be building a new engine for it) But I will be steadily buying parts as the money allows and deals come about.

My power goal is only around 150-170. Not much to some, but from my what I have driven in this seems to be my ideal goal. Enough power to get out of the way in emergency situations, and enough to help going up hill in the mountains during local club drives.

Those wheels make my vagina hurt.
A mild rebuild with upgraded rods and pistons will only cost a couple hundred more than a stock rebuild, so you can "skimp" on the engine with forged internals good for 350whp and never have to worry about your upgrade path down the road. With a good ECU, the SR20det T25 is good for about 210-220whp on a 1.6 w/3" exhaust.

If you're going to take your time, watch your budget, buy used, etc... then you're going to end up buying parts that will take full advantage of the capabilities of that turbo, and you will not have to limit yourself to 150whp... shit, there are guys with mild 1.8litre NA builds that are over 150whp now. If you seriously "only" want 150'ish, you can do it naturally aspirated without much trouble nowadays.

Start with a megasquirt, learn the basics of how to use it and go form there. And please tell us your getting rid of those wheels.

Yeah I am not a fans of the wheels either, but its what the car came with. They will be replaced with something a little easier on the eyes once the tires wear down on them. I would like to move up to a 15 inch wheel.

I am fairly new to miatas and what they are a capable of, so the initial 150-170 hp was goal was based off what I figured be reliable and safe. But I am not going to lie, a safe 200-220whp does sound incredibly nice. I don't want to skimp on ECU/Fuel management so I will probably get a MS before anything else and learn how to use it while the car is stock and probably simpler to tune and learn on. And hopefully that will get me prepared for when the turbo goes in and needs to be tuned.

Starting with the megasquirt is the plan. And no worries I am getting rid of them. They came with the car, but they have brand new tires on. So once the tires wear down in life I am going to get something in the 15inch area that is eye candy.

Eye candy doesn't cut it around here (unless it's pix of your fiancee, of course). Function over form. You need lightweight and strong.

Good luck with marriage. It's important to push things early in a marriage to establish boundaries. The trick is to not push too far and give in hard when needed. Also, don't worry about crying. Freaked me out the first time my wife cried on me. 26 years later, I'm used to it.

Right now I am trying do a lot of reading on starting with a MSPNP setup and the difficulty or how-to getting setup on the 1.6. Got to say the tips on the stickys about using the advanced search was a big help, wasn't getting far just doing a basic search.

Maybe you guys can give me your opinions.

I have been give an option right now as a wedding present. I just keep going back and forth to which one and I am just doing circles in my mind. My options are FM V-Maxx coilovers or a MSPNP. I don't know which to choose. Winter is coming soon and the car wont be driven as much, so I keep telling myself I can wait on suspension. But then I am not sure if I want to jump into a MSPNP at this stage. What would you do?

You definitely want to do the MSPNP while NA. That'll let you learn it prior to biting off the turbo build. You can also remove the AFM which gives a real bump.
