Turbo noob here

Hey guys names Donny! I drive an 99 emerald mica green NB. Im a member on clubroadster and when i asked for some turbo info I was directed here. I did read most of the DIY turbo thread also being in an auto tech program at the local tech school helps as well. I have quite a few components to my DIY kit universal inter cooler piping. Wideband, bov, external waste gate, boost controller. All I need is a few more things.

People in my class believe that a 50 trim turbo is to big and all I'll get is lag...is there a way around this? I hope to learn quite a bit from this forum!

I think you will be disappointed with a 50trim. I had one on my Talon a few years ago and even on a 2.0L motor it was bordereline for my tastes. There are much more efficient turbos out there that would be less laggy and probably way more fun, unless you are only concerned with top end. Even then I'd go with something else. If you've got it on the shelf for free, or almost free, then sure give it a shot. I put a 16g and a log-style mani on my Miata and it's about as slow to spool up as I'd ever want.

A custom built tubular mani from one of the fab shops who support the site will a long way towards making it livable, though, and if you decide to ditch it you'll be set up with a kick ass manifold ready for a more streetable turbo. I'd avoid a log manifold at all costs if you want any action below 4K rpm with it.

Unless you have a built motor I would be more concern with the limitations of the stock block (~250whp/wtp on average). The turbo you choose is more directed as to how you want to reach a particular power goal.

Hey thanks for the fast answers..I'm from green bay wi currently living in Madison. I received he turbo items free and new the previous owner was going to use them on his mustang but ended up moving away to college but I want to do this right my goals are about 220-250whp so I'll do a little more searching on what works best for turbo sizes and what not!

Welcome. you should not be worried about a 50 trim.I also have a 99 and I am using a t3 50trim ebay turbo at 10psi. full boost before 3500 rpms, i dont consider that laggy at all. been on my car for almost 20k miles now. my engine also has nearly180k miles (still going strong) so you are in good shape.

Thats def good to hear...I still might look into a different brand since I've never heard of Jdm sport I just want to be safe.

Techsalvager 03-28-2012 01:11 PM

a straight t3 50 trim would be fine
T3\T4 50 trim like you have, welcome to lag city.
Otherwords, don't use it.

Ive never heard of EMUSA before i bought this turbo but that is the stamp on it (180shipped) and im also using a EWG from them (50 shipped) flawless since installation zero shaft play.

Big turbo :)

donnyg20 04-14-2012 08:54 AM

So I was thinking maybe going with an internally wastegaTed turbo using the mazdaspeed downpipe and running low boost? (I have other aspects fuel, ems etc etc covered) I don't want immense power just something that give me lets say ~200-250rwhp
