I think $350 for a good clutch as the FM level 1 is a good deal. Paying $200 for a junk eBay clutch is just pissing money away.

sickmiatabra 08-21-2011 08:43 AM

I have heard nothing but good about fm level 1 and it's trq capacity is legit. There's just something about spending $2,000 in a week that makes me stingy lol. But I guess I can handle a little more. Even if I ordered it today, it may not be here till next weekend (which is install weekend) Let's say for some reason it was the week after, will the stock be able withstand any power? Or just stay out of boost and cruise till I have a clutch?

sickmiatabra 08-21-2011 09:34 AM

EDIT: This actually works out because Flyin Miata won't receive my voodoo box until tomorrow or Tuesday. So instead of getting the refund of $415 - 15% restock fee = $350, I can opt for store credit where they won't charge a restock fee, and I'll use the credit for clutch and call it a day. :)

So assuming shipping will be like 30 bucks. I'll have to purchase something else from them worth $25. lol

shipping is 26 for just clutch. Brings to it around $380 and small items will not make shipping go up much if at all. So I cam up with these things to throw in (1) Flyin Miata work gloves $20 (2) Magnetic Oil Drain Plug $13 or (3) Water wetter $10 Can't decide to go with one or two of these things..... any ideas?

I'm not going to keep $30 of store credit just chill there. I'll also try to see if I can get the difference back. But these small items interested me. Sunday morning bump..... one week away.

What turbo and how much boost are you going to be running? My stock clutch did OK under like 7psi unless I launched it really hard, then it would slip. I ran my stock clutch on like 12 psi (225 whp in my case) and it would do ok until I floored it, then it would slip. I'd say anything over 200whp, and your stock clutch will break loose. Basically, whatever the stock injectors can support, is what your stock clutch can support. It's ironic that it works out that way, but I swear that when the Miata was designed, it was designed to have a turbocharger bolted onto it and someone figured "let's make the injectors and clutch pretty much max out at the same point".

I look at it like this. Once you boost your car and feel the difference of it with boost from what is was before, you'll be like "holy Freakin WOW". Then after a while you'll be like the rest of us and get bored with it and you'll put in bigger injectors and turn up the boost, then you'll definately need a better clutch.

Their little jackstand tool is kinda nifty if you like your pinch welds.

$2000 in one week?

This is the song my wallet sings about my car lol

sickmiatabra 08-22-2011 12:11 AM

Yeah I spied the jackstand unit also. Guess I'll decide over the phone tomorrow morning. Either way, the level 1 clutch will be had :) i'll drive the stock clutch till it says hell naw. It's a t3 garrett and i'll have it on 7 but maybe 10 now that I have the 460cc injectors and MS. Should be right around 200whp..... I think.

Love the music video, I'm cutting off spending for a while after all this is legit. Hope to have a legit "build" thread soon, covering everything done with plenty of pics.

Anyone going to Import Alliance Sep 18th? or the H20 the weekend after over here in MD?

thirdgen 08-22-2011 01:10 AM

Nah, I have race warz that weekend. I'm gonna run for pinks. Some clown is gonna run me in an S2000. I will win, and he will lose, then me and my dad are gonna cruise around together in our Mad Tyte JDM Shitz. My boy Brian says the S2000 has over a hundred grand under the hood, but I'm callin B.S.

sickmiatabra 08-22-2011 09:17 AM

good luck man. Thanks for everyone's input and helping me to get the right parts. I knew I couldn't go wrong being a member here. I also hope I can point people in the right direction if when they plan to boost their NB's or any miata if the info supports it.

Just got off the phone with Flyin Miata and their awesome woman at the desk, Deb. I exchanged the voodoo box for the FM Level 1 clutch, their flyin miata mechanics gloves, and a magnetic oil drain plug. And still a little amount of store credit there for future use.

They were about to put the clutch on backorder because they don't have the override switch in stock right now........... I do not mind starting the car with 2 limbs. LOL. Everythings coming along. This week- manifold, injectors, and actuator are coming in. So I can finally start putting shit together. Here's some pics for now. Sunday can't come any sooner....and no more Rebecca Black lol

Looks like you're off to a great start! Wideband is strictly needed and is it first thing you should have.

pdexta 08-22-2011 12:46 PM

I know exactly how it feels with all these new parts coming in but you would be well ahead if you were to hold off on the turbo parts until you get the megasquirt in and working.

Install the megasquirt, play around with it, and get comfortable tuning the car NA; it's much more difficult to blow the car up that way. Then you can drop the injectors in (remove the top half of the intake manfold and they're much easier to get to) and adjust the tune accordingly. Once that's done install the turbo and retune again.

It's much simpler when you're dealing with one factor at a time. Especially when those inevitable issues do arrise; at least that way you'll have pretty good idea what you're trying to fix.

sickmiatabra 08-22-2011 01:03 PM

Thanks thirdgen!
and pdexta- I didn't think about installing it before the setup. Braineak is setting up a map i believe for the 460cc injectors and I've never tampered with MS before so I'm not sure how to go back and forth.

This weekend is pretty much have essentials taken care of - oil pan tapped, intercooler piping fabricated and the downpipe modified. Now once it is finally a "bolt on kit" I'm still going to run the stock intake and maf (have intercooler piping disconnected at throttle body. And drive it like that till megasquirt comes. This way, everything is functional, oil is being fed to turbo, open downpipe will still be open downpipe, I just won't be able to hit boost and I don't need to just yet.

**EDIT: And I'll finally be MAFless after the MS install also. I HATE MAF'S!! that was a big deal on the 240 game.**
MS will come, I'll drop in the injectors, hook up charge pipes, i'll have my vacuum lines routed (just plugged) and get them straight. get the laptop out, and get to tuning. (with friend's help of course)

of course my thread will be full of pics, and/or videos especially when the clutch comes in :)

Should be everything I expect it to be.

EDIT: 195500-1350 rx7 460cc injectors - I've come to find these are not exactly plug and play but that's what the pig tails are for. So am I in the clear with these??

No I have not searched this too much, but if I find answers before I get the "search noob" responses, I'll delete said questions lol. Thanks :)

sickmiatabra 08-24-2011 07:00 AM

TTT, Injectors will be fine as is after wiring up pig tails. Actuator came yesterday. Finally get to glimpse the manifold today. I'm ready to get this legit.

Reverant 08-24-2011 07:58 AM

These may be low impedance injectors, double check with a DMM to be sure. If they are, you may not want to go that route with a Megasquirt.

Loki79 08-24-2011 08:29 AM

Get TunerStudio if you're ever planning to do some mapping yourself.
Cold start enrichment i.e is something you can only do every time you start the car from cold, and being able to fix that yourself is worth the study.

The autotune part of TS is almost idiot proof, so tuning is easy even if you're a n00bie. Get a pal, a laptop, and go have fun. It's a good excuse to take the car out for a ride AND show it off to friends ;)

LEWK, I HAF PRON PROGRAMMABLE STUFFZ IN MY CAR!!

sickmiatabra 08-24-2011 09:33 PM

this is not loking like too much fun anymore

Turbo manifold and actuator came in yesterday. Swapped in a new a radiator (other one had the usual cracking at the head and jb weld was only doing so much lol)

My clutch is being shipped out today from flyin miata. Should be good timing.

I still can't figure out how I'm going to run my i/c piping. Everything else we've figured out, but that is going to be BIGGEST pain. I already posted for help in the DIY turbo section. Hoping to see some light soon.

last pic is me saving pinch welds lol

Get rid of those injectors. You need the high impedence 195500-2010's. At least I think that's the number of the 460 PNP's.

sickmiatabra 08-25-2011 02:57 PM

I was told I may still be good with those injectors though. Just some came high or low impedence and I'm still trying to look into how to tell the difference.
