Viking will turbo

Hei.

My Jeep Cherokee broke down 9 months ago and since then I have owned a MX-5 Miata.

Now, for my own enjoyment and learning expirience, i will put a turbo in my Miata.

What i have done so far:
- Assembled and installed a Megasquirt DIYPNP
- Fitted IAT and filter
- Wideband LC-2 and AFR gauge installed
- Tuned some AFR and spark tables with Tunerstudio

Parts I have:
- Volvo td04hl-13g turbo charger, off a v70
- ebay cast iron manifold
- intercooler and piping

Parts i want
- vTPS
- boost control
- blow of valve?

To do list:
- fabricate down pipe
- turbo my miata

All help and tips are very much appreciated.

Best regards,
Omnia

The car, taken last summer.

It's not stock rims/tires, the stock rims is used for winter tires.

I'm curious how you plan to put that on the ebay manifold. I'd pay $200 to not have to clean that thing.

aidandj 02-19-2016 09:12 PM

It has a t3 bolt pattern. Its the same turbo I have, but with a smaller compressor housing.

OP, its a good turbo. I milled my flange flat to get rid of the weird volvo step flange. I'm not sure I would do it again, it left me a very thin flange.

The wastegate design is fucking awesome though, looks like an EFR wastegate.

You have a different downpipe flange from me so no help there.

If you have the built in bypass valve, use it, its awesome.

I actually have a 13c sitting in my garage, that looks a lot less nasty than that one.

Now my real advice.

Buy an ebay T3. With some wastegate porting it will spool just as well and be awesome. It won't be shitty and covered in junk. Just do it. Please. This is coming from someone who runs that turbo everyday and thinks its awesome. But if I could do it again I would use a different turbo.

tommy, link him the right turbo to buy.

Thanks all for your input.

I have a adapter flange to fit the turbo. Volvo parts is common here in scandinavia, throw a snowball and you will hit an old rusty one. You might say there are more volvos than you can shake a stick at.

I chose this turbo partly because I want to know why someone would rather pay $200 than to clean it. I have never taken a turbo apart before. Learn by doing! This build is not just about geting a faster miata..

What are your thoughts about adapter flanges? As long as there are no leaks, free-flowing exhaust and dont take too much space, i dont see why not.

deezums 02-20-2016 04:25 AM

So that's a t3 flange?

I don't see the point on the inlet flange adapter then, don't run the manifold to turbine housing gasket. You'll need the thing milled flat if it won't seal without leaking.

The other flange should be fine for making a downpipe. There's less pressure on that side, run a gasket there if you want.

Can it be clocked easy enough, while keeping a stiff and reliable wastegate can location? That's one of the reasons I'd rather just start with the $200 turbo, easy install. I wasn't the first to use it and I had pretty good info leading me to believe it'd be reliable and pretty poppin' still and I wasn't let down.

Welcome, omnia. Check out the Miata Gallery and post up some pics!

Good idea. Ignore the advice of the one person here who has used this turbo.

I'm out.

the "adapter" he posted makes sense, so he can fill in the weird circle with material and seal against a normal t3 outlet.

If he mounted that directly to his cheap tacotaco manifold, the gasket would blow shortly. if he didnt use a gasket, it would have a huge exhaust leak.

like, it's pretty obvious this:

wont seal on this:

Assuming you used oil feed M10 x 1.5 to -4AN line, did you use any restrictor on your oil feed for this turbo?

Its not a T3 flange, its a Volvo (Mitsubishi turbo) flange with a T3 bolt pattern. The turbine channel itself is more rectangular (similar to the T3 outlet), the round hole functions more like a key hole and taper down to a elliptic rectangle, so fitting the adapter flange between the T3 manifold and the turbo would be (almost) as nice a fit as bolting the turbo to a stock Volvo exhaust manifold

I just built a vtps based on the wells201. It's pretty easy, but i don't know if you can get them in europe. I'm pretty sure people have used bmw sensors for the same though.

this might help get you rolling:

No shit the adapter will work, i have 3 of these turbos in my garage, but why.

You have to buy an adapter, downpipe flange, make some sort of new wastegate mounting.

You need longer studs, and this is a cast manifold, so if you drive it hard you need custom inconel studs.

You need to rebuild the turbo, there's $100.

The adapter will put the turbo higher up, maybe even in the hood. So downpipe will be worse.

All that probably will cost more than a $200 ebay turbo.

Of course you can make it work, I have 20k miles and 10 track days on mine, but given the chance I would do it all over again

Hi wackbards,

Thanks for the tips. I have actually already bookmarked your link. I know that some local wreckers have a lot of BMWs, but I cant find the TPS in their parts catalouge. Most likely it is a part they dont pick and resell. I will contact them next week to hear what they say, maybe they can go pick one for me or let me in to the yard so I could go hunt for one myself. (I hope I dont find a bloody RAV4)

ebay do ship worldwide though, if I must buy a Wells.

wackbards 02-20-2016 04:55 PM

not sure about amazon shipping, but here's the wells:

All valid points. But for my case a $200 turbo becomes $400 including shipping to Norway. Also, a Mitsubishi turbo is superior to a $200 ebay turbo.

Did you use a restrictor on your oil feed line?

aidandj 02-20-2016 07:47 PM

It's better with an OEM rebuild. Which will be another 200.

I went down your path, doing everything I can to keep you from making that mistake lol

I used a 3an line no restrictor.
