Hey there I'm new to the forum so I just wanted to say hi.
I currently drive a 2009 jeep wrangler sahara and an '04 nissan 350z but I'm selling it because I really want to get a miata. I still haven't decided on whether I want an na or nb. Also considering a mazdaspeed nb.
All I know at this point is that I want to be FI.
Either way, I just wanted to say hi and that I'm looking forward to learning from the forum as I'm new to miatas.

Here's the z just to show what I'm moving on from.
It's a touring model with 66k on it
Not much work done to it. Just CAI, wheels, tires, coilovers and some suspension geometry parts.

Damn! Are those Michelin tires?

Clean Z. A miata will feel like a 1/5th scale model of it that's more fun in every way but accelaration. A turbo miata will solve that last part.

I'm thinking Wanli or Sumitomo, but OP will need to confirm.

Girz0r 08-05-2015 02:47 PM

If I were you... I would try to find a sweet deal on a low mile NB2 with a 6 speed. Suspension/rims/tires and attempt to learn how to tune with a megasquirt while not FI. Check out the build section for some great examples & make a complete A-Z list for turbo pieces.

Become poor.

Tell me more about the "extra torque" your annoying-as-fuck VVT mechanism adds on your huge 1.8 litre motor at 2000rpms. :fawk::giggle::bowrofl::rofl:

If only that was the sole difference. And it actually does. When it works right......lol

concealer404 08-05-2015 03:16 PM

I just like simplicity and lightness. The NB1 is a good way to get the good parts of an NB without tacking on a fuckload of weight.

And i've had a bad experience with VVT.

18psi 08-05-2015 03:18 PM

yeah, we both have
I really like nb2 bumper and lights, and interior tho.

concealer404 08-05-2015 03:34 PM

Interior is like... the same. But with a better center console. Also: I haz NB2 interior in my NB1, so nyah nyah nyahhhhh

That light output, though.

18psi 08-05-2015 03:40 PM

cluster, seats, console, door cards, c'mon now

Wanlis! and yeah it will definitely be like driving a scale model of my z which is what I love about miatas. I've driven my friends miata and even though it was extremely slow, it was so much more fun than driving my z.
I like nb1's and nb2's so I'm pretty much open to whatever I find a deal on. I found an amazing deal on a na last weekend but it sold within 24 hours of it being up. Would've been a perfect platform or flip car.
Learning to tune with megasquirt is a good idea. I've been looking into that and then going fi.
What are your thoughts on MSM's? I mean factory turbo just makes it easier to work with when I decide to throw something bigger in there am I wrong?

1) Ok so swap it
2) Still junk
3) yes
4) yes

I suppose i should say that i really just have an NB2 carpet and dash in my car. The rest of those things listed went in the trash. :giggle:

18psi 08-05-2015 03:52 PM

They're great, but the turbo is tiny and lots of stuff needs to be replaced to make them nice. Basically most of the stuff on them is an afterthought, so to make one nice you'll spend about as much money into parts as you would to boost a n/a miata.

But they're still cool, and I loved my MSM

concealer404 08-05-2015 03:54 PM

And they look thooper.

If you can be happy with ~220whp, they're an easy button, if not the cheapest button.

For 250whp or more... just start with a normal Miata unless you have a burning desire to be able to tell people you own an MSM.

On the stock ECU, they're a great way to get run down in the straights by my stock motor n/a NB1.

18psi 08-05-2015 03:58 PM

stock ecu

LOL

I ACTUALLY ordered an MS3Pro for my MSM after the very first drive. Literally 5 miles of driving on stock ecu, and I ordered the megasquirt :giggle:

Oh yeah, it's that bad. I had to explain to the dude why this was happening.

I don't even have a standalone on my car yet, but at least it doesn't feel like a bag of shit.

I test drove two stock MSMs shortly after they came out. I had to ask the salesman both times "Uhhh.... is this broken?"

psyber_0ptix 08-05-2015 04:15 PM

Buy my NA

Welcome to the forum

DNMakinson 08-05-2015 04:19 PM

People like to rag on NB1's but look at how many there are turboed on this site. 9.5:1 CR is another plus IMO, over NB2's 10:1, for the FI (not everyone has E85).

MSM's are pretty. No question.

18psi 08-05-2015 04:23 PM

I wouldn't say rag. I don't think anyone here actually dislikes the nb1, actually most of the track guys prefer them over the 2 due to simplicity and more parts carryover, and cheaper ecu solutions. Kinda like what concealer is getting at

ryankpeck 08-05-2015 04:36 PM

Dang psyber I just saw your build.. 301 hp! That's awesome. I'd be happy with 230-250

I definitely don't have a desire to tell people I have a msm
I'm thinking you guys are right and I should start with a normal nb2 or nb1 and go from there!

That depends on YOU and your abilities. If you can handle the tuning learning curve then have at it. Obviously stay stock & tweak your msm base tune to perfection.

Reason(s) I went with my mazdaspeed.... "That front bumper doh..." & Clean interior/exterior & Ti paint color.

When I arrived at the dealership 4 hours away, I was surprised with a BEGi S3 kit under the hood. And a life time supply of lemonade :eggplant:

Braineack 08-06-2015 06:04 AM

Welcome, ryankpeck. Check out the Miata Gallery and post up some pics!

Become poor.

These two things for sure.

I changed over to MS3 while na. Best decision I made. And sure you arent going to have a super duper awesome race car with race car noises.. But you also won't blow up your car.

ryankpeck 08-07-2015 04:44 PM

Yeah the plan now is to definitely go megasquirt before going FI. I started to read through the "how to tune your megasquirt" section on their site and it looks like there's quite the learning curve which I'm sure I can handle.
I'm in no rush to get one so It'll probably be a while until I find the right one at a decent price.
Lot's of plans that will all take time.
I want whichever one I get to eventually be a track car

Haha you're probably right but at that point I need to build internals and it starts to get really expensive.. Not saying it's going to stop me :hsugh:

Way to take suggestions.

And....

Buy his NA if he's selling it. Seriously, what a sweet car.

ryankpeck 08-10-2015 08:35 AM

I found an NA last weekend, MINT condition with 84k miles with a hardtop for only 2000 but I called the lady selling it 16 hours after she posted it and it was already gone. :sad2: I probably would've just flipped it to be honest since I want to get an NB now but still.. It was a great deal I missed out on

I'll find one eventually

Girz0r 08-10-2015 09:19 AM

Save your monies for 'THAT PURFECT' miata :burncash:

At this point I have the money.. Just waiting for "THAT PURFECT" miata to come along. That one was it but I was just wasn't quick enough

ryankpeck 08-19-2015 08:47 AM

So last weekend I found a pretty good condition, completely stock na with 76k miles. After negotiating I got the car for a pretty good deal. Not sure if I'm going to keep it or flip it and just keep looking for an nb. Either way I'm pretty excited with it

Girz0r 08-19-2015 11:34 AM

Photos or it didn't happen! :likecat:

Photos will come this weekend! I went and saw it on the weekend but had no way to get it home so I just need to take a trip to the dmv to get it registered so I can go pick it up.

Never updated this but I ended up selling the red NA because I got an offer I couldn't refuse.. That was quick...
But I ended up buying another NA.
93 with a 1.8 out of a 97. Right now it's na but I will be boosting it over the winter. A few things have to be done before I do that but that's the plan.
I have some questions about megasquirt but I'll search and possibly start a new thread about that.
Anyway.. Here's the car
