Default Doing research, Thinking about switching from ASP evo To SSM Miata

Im an engineer and builder, I want a project I can really dig into to build a "to the limit of the rules" car. The Evo is just too nice and tearing apart a $20k+ car seems wrong. A 2040# boosted miata sounds perfect. 300hp would give the same weight to power ratio as my Evo at 450.

This is my 9th season autocrossing and its time to do some traveling, moving to a miata would also make towing to events much more economical (smaller tow rig, less weight pulled).

Current evo now on 285 hoosiers plus the rest of the goodies needed.

Galant VR4 when the engine crankwalked. Of course its back in the garage now for some wheel bearings... ugh, dsms...

Old Talon, 2.4 stroker, over 420hp/470ftlbs torque, 275 kumho V710s, quaife front diff, evoIII rear diff, etc.. Not one thing un-touched.

Any affiliation with the old NABR crowd? The cars and name seems vaguely familiar.

Well to make 300 hp you will need at least how much money. hmm

400 rods
400 pistons
400 oil pump
600 donor longblock
600 EMS
400 injectors
700 six speed trans
1000 manifold, downpipe
500 exhaust
400 IC and piping
100 misc lines
300 gauges
$???? turbo

OK so like 8000 or so bucks. i guess that is not so bad.

Yeah, have had a NABR account since like 02 though not to active there. Been a dsm guy since 99 and always the same name on all the usual forums so you might have seen the name . Def recognize yours from NABR though.

Yeah, something like that. Im figuring it'll be 15-20k through the years but I give myself 6-10k/year for car mods but that includes race tires which can eat a good chunk of it. I'm also a 1-2 mod at time guy and get it sorted. So builds take me a while but things get done right the first time and to a plan. Learned my lessons long ago.

8k is pretty standard for about a 7:1 w ratio, hell on an evo 25% of that is just in the turbo.

I was thinking the 50mph in 2nd would be perfect for the shitty local course then 70 in 3rd for the big course in packwood. Luckily theirs a bunch of options with rear diffs for you guys. Plus the option for an rx7 tii swap.

Looking forward to the cheap, get more done for the same money. And also getting better at not letting awd save my *** and learn more about momentum.

Bringing this back from the dead.. The summer is over, race parts are coming off the Evo, and the search begins for a 99-00 with a torsen and preferably a 6-speed.

This summer has been great (other than a micro-laminar discectomy back surgury ) and the Evo has gotten faster and faster but now at that crossroad. Either the Evo needs to lose 250lbs and gain 75hp or jump ships and build the Miata. The only thing making me hesitant on the miata is the wimpy drivetrain but I think I can be happy with just 300hp.

Selling off Evo parts and adding the money I was going to spend on it this winter, I have 10-12k to get started with buying and building for next year. Now I just need to find a unicorn to get started..
