04 engine vvt into 90. Need fuel and timing base map.

OK well I am finaly swapping in the 04 engine i bought. Now where to start on fuel and timing. I know that changing the compresion from 9-1 to 10.5-1 means I need a lot less timing.
Does anyone have a safe starting point.

Things to know.
550cc injectors.
using stock cas on exhaust cam.
Using stock coils
begi exhaust manifold and downpipe. 2 1\2 all the way back
2560 journal bearing.
starting 6-7psi. will move upto 10-13 as soon as I can get it there safe.

Will my stock fuel map work. Maybe increase req fuel 15%?
I know I need to change spark.
I have searched but cant seem to fine spark tables for these yr for MS DIPNP
Any help would be great

Stock plug wires won't fit in the holes on the VVT valve cover, I uploaded a spark table that might blow up your engine so tone-it down a bit, just adjust Require Fuel until it starts and go from there. Go find some E85 because you're not going to like the results on 93-octane.

Wow thanks for the heads up on the vvt valve cover and plug wires. Any suggestions on fixing that?

Savington 08-13-2012 01:17 PM

Use the 01+ coils.

90 Turbo 08-13-2012 02:30 PM

Ok but I only want to change one thing at a time to start so I was hoping to verify the running and driving with stock 1.6 stuff then change over to the newer coils and wires.
I read on here once change more than one thing at your own risk and I dont want to me guessing if its the coils or my wiring of the coils that is the problem if it does not start.
I will test when I get home and see where the interference is. Maybe it will be easy to trim to fit?

I found this thread on setting dwell at 5ms:
Stock ign dwell for 01? - Miata Turbo Forum - Home to the Turbo Miata
What should my accel compensation and max spark duration be; 1.0 and .7? What about cranking dwell?

Thanks.

Oh shit, you have a 1.6. disregard.

I have the coils and an 01 harness in the garage you can borrow or replace if you need this ASAP. I also have a spare CKP and CMP laying around. I'd love to participate in the wire-up so I can have the experience when I do mine because I'm scared and need someone to hold me. I know that you might not be comfortable holding a man, so I will bring a kitty to hold me.

Oh, you need to wire-in sequential fuel too. I have that harness as well for when I convert my turbo car.

which one is the sensor on the back, passenger side of the valve cover the cmp or the ckp? Where is the other?

Hustler the 04 engine I bought had the sensor plug in broken off clean so if you have one let me know I will buy it from ya.
I am going to start the car going with the stock 1.6 ingition and then change over to the 04 coils and wires after I am month or so.
If you are in the plano area over the weekend please stop by. I could use any help I can get and if ya need a hug I am here for ya bro :)

I am so busy at work this week I am nervous I am forgetting something I will need for the swap. I assumed I could reuse my oil pan barb but now I read there are different ones. I have a 3/8npt tap I was hoping this 50 dollar tool would come in handy for the pan barb/drain but now I am not even sure it is the right side and I dont want to have to run out a buy a lot of expensive tool to pull this off.

How about the oil pan. How hard is it to pull. I have the engine out but I hear they can be stuck on there pretty good and some drill and tap with out removing even with the engine out of the car but I would like to pull since I have the gasket kit/rtv and 2 semi circle rubber things anyway.

Someday I will get off my lazy ass and write a VVT swap FAQ.

Someday.

I will beat you to it. Shuind and Y8s effectively made one in my daily build thread. Once I get everything done I will take pictures and screenshots.

CMP is on the top of the valve cover, passenger side, toward the back, sticking up vertically, near the cast VVT piece.

I need it for myself. If you need to borrow and replace, that's great. I guess I could look up the new price and you can pay that because I can't really take a loss on something I bought new and plan to use. It's still in the plastic.
How are you going to get the spark-plug wires down, into the holes of the valve-cover to start it? If you machine/drill out the holes, the 01+ coils won't fit. I have at least one month until I do the build so you can borrow those coils too. They are used coils so you can replace them with used, working stuff.

Maybe Saturday morning. My GF is in town and I haven't seen her in two weeks so our time together is pretty valuable. I'm off on Friday but working on turbo car.

I recommend you move the oil-return to the back of the oil pan, weld on an AN fitting if posible. Abe might be able to hook you up. A welded oil return fitting is beautiful. I have some junk -8 fittings and hose you can have.

Easy to pull if you have an engine stand and the gasket, a bitch if you don't. If the engine is in the car, don't do it.

90 Turbo 08-15-2012 02:12 PM

Cool where is the CKP?
I was planning on trimming the little ring on the 90 plug wires.
Dont worry about the CMP I will buy one from oreillys 70 bucks thanks for the offer.
I will working on the car saturday morning so if you have time. It would be great to get some hands on advice. I will Pm you my cell and address.

I am nervous about welding the pan. I dont know where in the back I would weld it. I can weld but am not the artist some are.
How important is the mod. What are the advantages over drilling and tapping with existing stuff. Just trying to keep this as simple and low cost as practicle.

90 Turbo 08-15-2012 02:13 PM

Ok and I dont have a engine stand. How important is that?

hustler 08-15-2012 02:38 PM

CKP is on the grank, driver side, down low.

How are you going to turn the engine upside down to remove the pan if you don't have an engine stand?

90 Turbo 08-15-2012 04:24 PM

I dont know. Good question?
Could I use wood blocks and set it on the ground upside down or would that screw up valve cover and intake?

WestfieldMX5 08-16-2012 02:15 PM

I don't know shite about VVT swaps, but if anyone needs space to put the info online, I'll put it up on my site.

90 Turbo 08-24-2012 03:49 PM

I would sure love to swap over the 04 coils but can not figure out how. Does anyone know. Please a link or step by step instruction.

90 Turbo 09-07-2012 09:10 AM

I am updating this so if someone searches they might find it helpful. after the swap things I learned:
The idle air controler on the 04 runns at a higher fequence. so in the drop down box you need to go at least 7 in the 30.5 hz box.
making a coil bracket was not that hard but I had to use one longer wire from another set of wires. I just mounted it to the intake manifold. I will post pics.
the 1.6 downpipe worked but was pretty close to steering shaft and bolt that holds together would not fit right so i tack welded it in 2 places. the dam bolt came loose all the time and I will just take the whole thing out if i need.
Really the engine swap moved the turbo forward 5-10mm and 2-3mm towards the drivers side, all guestimates.
I had an ac buddy recover my r134 but did not need to just left ac hooked up and unbolted it before lifting engine then just put it back on.
same for power steering and clutch slave.

I had to trim my fans for the turbo piping to fit that 5-10mm forward thing.
