1.6 TPS Confusion, need help.

1 Attachment(s)
So i'm trying to install my new BMW TPS. It didn't come with a pigtail so I soldered wires to the connectors thusly:
Attachment 208503

I have tried combinations of plugging the wires of the new TPS into the stock TPS connector, tried just plugging ground and power on the new TPS into the stock connector, then running a wire into the car directly to the MS. The MS still isn't seeing it. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Could it just be a bad TPS? Do they even go bad?

Which pin at the stock ECU connector is the TPS signal run through, 1N or 2L? I tried both to no avail. Thats when I tried running a wire directly to the MS still to no avail.

This should be so simple, but i'm making it harder than it should be I feel. Ideas?

Hey! thanks for posting this. I am hopefully going to try to start gathering the bits to do the VTPS very soon too.

Just an idea but don't you have to do a TPS calibration in MT to tell MS what to look for ?

Please keep us posted an good luck. :)

You first have to get the MS to see the TPS for it to be calibrated.

One look at the DB37 Wiring Schematic made me realize the errors of my ways. The blue TPS wire needs to connect to 1n on the stock ECU connector, and the grey TPS wire needs to connect to 2L on the stock ecu connector. I hadn't even soldered a wire to (pin 26?) on the DB37 thus confusing the shit out of myself. Going to go out to the garage and try this new method out :)

Ok, i'm getting a signal to the MS but now there is a clicking under the dash and everything is backwards in MT. Its showing 16 when fully open, and 222 when fully closed. I've tried reversing wires, no luck. Does this just mean that the TPS I got spins the other way and isn't going to work? Its Bosch model 0-280-120-406 and it bolted on just fine. Used this part number as per the MSPNP FAQ.

It's just a potentiometer. They can be wired either way, and you've just got it backwards. I know you already tried flipping some wires, but I'm telling you it really is this simple. If you've currently got it going from 222 when closed to 16 when open, all you have to do is flip the two wires that are currently connected to +5Vref (pin 26) and GND.

Clicking under the dash is worrysome. Details on that?

haha, figured after I decided to switch back to the stock TPS someone would have a suggestion =P

When I reverse the wires I get numbers that make even less sense. With the wires the other way I think I got like 255 closed, 230something open. Which is still backwards and makes zero sense. Atleast with the wires the other way it was a full, seemingly normal sweep. You say to switch +5Vref and ground? I was switching +5Vref and the other TPS wire. I have +5Vref hooked to the red wire, 1N on the stock harness, and the Blue TPS wire on 2L, Ltgreen/white wire. Is this backwards as well?

And as for the clicking...no clue. Was louder at first, now I can hardly hear it.

Impossible to say, since you've got a foreign TPS hacked onto the other end and I have no idea what the correct pinout of it is. But clearly you had the "other" TPS wire (the "wiper" terminal, connected to pin 22) correct in the first test, where it was linear but backwards. You just need to reverse Vref and GND, to flip the polarity of the sensor.

Ok, its working now and no clicking under the dash. Thanks joe, this shit is money. Cant wait to see how my idle is tomorrow.

Hope it works for you. I am dying to fix my idle problem. I have a light flywheel and I think it makes it harder for MS to deal with the idle.

If you could share the p/n for the VTPS and links to information it will help me a lot.

Thanks :)
