There are a few non-PNP Megasquirt installations running on '99 cars already. Most of them are running a '97 or earlier cam sensor or a Ford crank sensor, but a few guys have pushed the envelope and run the stock sensors with experimental MS2/Extra code.

Will DIYAutoTune.com release an MSPNP for the '99 and later models? We intend to build one, but there are a couple of other projects we will need to finish before that happens and a couple other MSPNPs we plan to release. So we can't commit to a release date at this point.

I think this application has some great potential IF it could be done as PNP. Definitely seems like there's a market out there since the cars are almost ten years old now. It would be shame not to use the OE crank trigger though given it's accuracy over the "timing belt" driven CAS. I used the OE trigger wheel with Link wire-in - just removed the extra trigger "nubs" off the crank wheel and used the cam sensor to set coil phase. Worked great.

I ended up buying a MS with a Parallel Boomslang style install cable (Mostly Plug and Play) from Chad Jernigan for my 99. I don't have the time to wait for the true 99PNP setup, and Chad was great to deal with and runs a very similar setup to me.

I will probably get my setup from Chad sometime this week, or next.

That is what I did. I installed a used CAS on my '99 and had Chad build me a MS with a boomslang. So there is no need to wait if you want to go MS now. The CAS will add cost. From what I saw they sell between $100-$150 used.

How is your car running? What size injectors are you running? Sound like most of us have similar setups.

Right now it is on jackstands for the turbo install so it is not running.

BUT I am almost there, just need to install the gauges and clean up the wiring. I should have it running again this weekend. Right now I have the stock injectors installed but I have a set of 550cc RX7 injectors in hand cleaned and ready to go.

If we are all using about the same stuff then sharing tuning info will be easier :bigtu:

actually, they generally go for about $50 incl shipping via ebay. just bought one a couple of days ago.

Isn't one of the key issues dealing with the different system the NB uses for the alternator?

If you go with a parallel installation the alternator is still controlled by the stock ECU. No problem. There are some good threads here with more info. Try a search on 'NB MS' or something like that.

What i'm thinking about doing now is pulling the 99 Alt remove the 99 Cam Sensor add the NA CAS and Intake cam gear and running it pretty much like an NA.

My only problem with that is losing OBD II scanning. We don't have emissions testing right now but i have a feeling it's coming in the next year or two.

If there was an MSPnP I could just pulling the Pnp out and put my EMU and Stock ECU back in just for the OBD II scan needed to pass emissions.

The other thoughts i have are using the 96-97 ECU in parallel with a MS. This way i'd still have OBD II scanning and it would use the CAS.

OK, I've refrained from posting this since it'll open another can of worms, but here goes. This is what I did to my '99 to get a trigger pattern similar to the NA CAS (Might work for a MS too).

1. Remove the plate from the crank, and carefully grind down the teeth at 10BTDC leaving no trace that they were there. That will leave you with two at ~75BTDC.

2. Take a carbide burr and grind the double-teeth off the intake cam nice and smooth leaving only the single pulse.

3. You're done, if you want it back the way it was, just replace the intake cam gear (might even have the same marks on the ex cam?) and stick a new trigger wheel on the crank.

Or use a 90-97 CAS and put it in the back of your head where you have a block off plate instead...the end.

Yes, I could be over complicating things..

To me it doesn't make sense to have a sensor installed that nothing is using. if I did that the 99 Cam sensor would be sitting there doing nothing 99.999% of the time.

With the right Boomslang style harness i should be able to switch between the 96-97 ECU with the EMU and the 96-97 MSPnP without changing anything but the ECU, this appeals to me.

I don't understand what everyones issue with this is. I am fully OBDII compliant besides my dead rear O2 sensor. With the MS in parallel with the stock '99 ECU using a standard ECU patch harness, 90-97 CAS, and MS controlling fuel and spark. You end up with a super simple solution that works flawlessly.

The issue is that there are two systems when all you need is one. Whenever you introduce more systems you are also inducing more possible failures.

It's cool that you are happy with your solution and I’m not trying to crap on it. To me, it would be better to only have one system run the car daily with the option to add OBD II compliance when I need it.
