Default Passing CA Smog roller dyno. Failed High NOx, things bouncy.

Hey guys. I'm running one of Revs Enhanced MS2s on my built 1.8 with BP4W head.

I've been working on getting my car smogged. On my last run, I pulled:
15MPH. RPM 1815. Test:
Hydrocarbons (PPM) Measured 189. Max Allowed 134. FAILED
CO% Measured 4.23 Max Allowed .82. FAILED
NO (PPM) Measured 306 Max Allowed 847. PASSED
%o2 Measured 0.0
%CO2 Measured 12.4

25MPH. RPM 2080. Test:
Hydrocarbons (PPM) Measured 61. Max Allowed 108. PASSED
CO% Measured .02 Max Allowed .71. PASSED
NO (PPM) Measured 1048 Max Allowed 786. FAILED
%o2 Measured 3.1
%CO2 Measured 12.6
I was working with Rev to smooth out the map and iron out any issues. Now I'd like to see what you guys think. The 15mph test seems OK now but the 25mph test things are funkey. I can even feel surging sometimes.

Heres an index for that log so you guys know what I was trying to do.
  • 7831 - I start the car.
  • 7840 - I free rev the engine. It pops, hesitates, tries to die, its cold.
  • 7926 - I drive the car to the flat lands for the smog drive tests. No obvious issues come to mind.
  • 8366.759 - I kill the engine.
  • 8390 - I start the engine.
  • 8426.475 - Begin 15mph 1815RPM goal in First gear.
  • 8597.06 - Begin 25mph 2080RPM goal in First gear.
  • 8799.562 - Begin 15mph 1815RPM goal in Second gear.
  • 8923.981 - Begin 25mph 2080RPM goal in Second gear.
  • 9027.96 - I do some just driving between 1500-2200 rpms. Light acceleration. Just for fun. and pull into a restaurant for some lunch, and shut it down.
Any comments? What do I do? Where do I go?

For some reason the upload feature isn't loading properly in my browser. I put the long in yousendit for now. I can take another one and try to upload though.

I'll give you that I didn't post the tune. I'll fix that. Apparently my log is too big

rename that msq from Overwritemytune.msq to something more personal please.

How long was your car sitting before you started it up at 7831? It looks like you did about 10 minutes of driving before it was on the rollers, that might not have been enough to really heat up the cat to proper light-off temp.

Try driving doing some highway/freeway driving, or at least steady state at 45+ mph for 15-20 minutes before the test to make sure the cat is nice & hot for the test itself. The longer the car sits and cools, the less the cat will work.

Beyond that I don't really see anything horrible in the tune emissions-wise, maybe someone more experienced in tuning for emissions will chime in with suggestions.

So progress was made on this Smog check. 15mph test passed. 25mph test has way high no. Any ideas?

Significant Progress was made. Here is the latest.

15mph. 1735RPM. Overall PASS!
HC (PPM) Max: 134. Average: 27. Measured: 120
CO (%) Max: .82. Average: .09. Measured .25
NO (PPM) Max: 847. Average: 255. Measured 753
%CO2 Measured 14.2
%O2 Measured .4

25mph. 2929RPM. Overall FAIL! NO
HC (PPM) Max: 108. Average: 18. Measured: 21
CO (%) Max: .71. Average: .07. Measured: .01
NO (PPM) Max: 786. Average: 223. Measured: 907
%CO2 Measured 14.6
%O2 Measured .4

I did notice that the tech shifted gears and did my 25mph test in second gear which had the RPMs at 2929 vs doing it in first gear it was about 2000 before. I took the log driving around my neighborhood. I encountered traffic and changed gears to vary the driving. So there is a first gear 25mph and a second gear 25mph cruise in the log. The target RPMs are 2929 and 2080.

Any ideas?

I've done some reading on high NO. According to what I read, It can be caused by being too lean. Most likely, ultimately, the combustion temp is too high. You can fix it with two things, more fuel or less timing. (or a bad EGR, but I dont have EGR so I dont worry about it)

Before I go messing around with stuff I barely understand I'd like to see what you more experienced guys have to say. Why is pulsewidth and rpm so bouncy? Sometimes I can feel the engine doing it, sometimes I can't.

Pull some timing. You're not too far from passing as it is. How old is your cat/what shape is it in?
There's kind of a narrow window for RPM, so shifting to 2nd for the 25/25 is normal. In some cars I even have to shift into 3rd.

So I pulled some timing.

Then I failed the 15mph test.

25mph @ 2936RPM NOX is good

15mph @ 2936PRM NOX failed. Meas 1018, max 847

It is a cooler day today. I wonder if that changed things. I can cut 15mph timing too, but then it's running like 8 degrees. Something is wrong.

This one is older, but the basic information is the same for all ECU's. Good smog info: MS1 Extra Tuning Manual

MM!! Good webpage. I had seen that once before but forgot where it was. I barely understand what I'm doing, but I'm going to go play.

I cant really log the smog run itself, well I suppose I could stash the computer under a jacket or something

FINALLY it passed smog. I had to take the timing at 1800 RPMs down into the 8 degree range though. Something is funny. I want to drive it and look into tuning for power/mpgs.

Anyone know of a tuning/dyno shop in Sacramento area?

Move to Texas. Remove your cat. Drive past oil and gas wells fast.

We're about to have the fastest speed limit in the country (not counting some limitless roads that might exist in Nevada or Montana -- are those still limitless?). All the **** in Maryland are up in arms (seriously, my wife's from Maryland and her old friends give her **** about it -- but she can't wait to hit those roads with her Expedition in 4WD, AC on, windows and sunroof open, pulling a loaded horse trailer at 10 over).

Fae, you listening?

I think the heat would kill me in 5 seconds in Texas.
