hey just to know what kinda intake temps you guys getting. im getting super hot and i have a intercooler about the same as bens. and what the rule when you get high intake temps on tunning? more retard? could i be getting high intake temps from high egt? im only at 15 to 16 full advance on a t25 at 12psi. just a few questions i thought i would ask. just blew my engine rings or ringlands broke. i will take it apart and see whats up soon. but heat or lean or det would cause this problem correct?

Mach929 12-10-2007 11:08 PM

how high are your IAT's? what's the ambient temps.

patsmx5 12-10-2007 11:09 PM

retarding timing will increase egt's, not lower them. You should mention some numbers, like the temp readings your refering to. Maybe mention the ambient temperatures as well, so we can compare efficiencies.

what miata? 12-10-2007 11:21 PM

i know retarding timming results in a higher egt im asking if a higher egt would make the turbo hoter increasing the heat on the compressor resulting in a higher ait. ambient is between 85 to 90 i (miami) im seing 101 while cruzing and driving and 120-150 in boost.....

Mach929 12-10-2007 11:30 PM

you're right it sounds a little too high 120isn't too bad 150 i think it too high. During the summer on a low 90's day a friend and i beat on the car for a couple hours straight, highest IAT we saw was 113, 15psi. the t25 is a little bit smaller and will blow a litte hotter at higher boost, but i would focus on my intercooler and timing.

supersuk 12-10-2007 11:46 PM

Holy crap!! Thats not right. I'm running those temps in 80 degree weather 6 psi no intercooler. I thought mines was bad......

I see about 10 above ambient tops at cruise. Under boost the most i've ever seen is 111 F. Pretty sure it was like 88* out. This is only at 8 psi though.

Hey man-- good meeting you the other day at PRI.

If you tuned at controlled intake temps, got your timing dialed in just right, and then started seeing much higher intake temps on the street/track then yes that can lead to detonation. 150F is high, you could tune around it, but you're definitely down on power.

I tuned our car here in ATL with roughly 65 degree ambient temps, and in boost I wouldn't see over maybe 80-85 degrees or so with a good fan on the IC. In Orlando for PRI we didn't have a fan on the IC and it was 80 degree ambient. IATs got up to 129F and I had to pull some timing back based on the higher intake air temps. We were down 30whp for the show because of this. That was after making the first pull, hearing a couple hints of det, and making the above changes. I had already set the ECU to pull a bit of timing at higher IATs, but not aggressively enough, it's there now.
