AIT sensor + intake manifold = Heatsoak?

I was considering drilling and tapping a hole in my intake manifold for my gm style AIT sensor. It is on the plastic intake piping now and im going to be going turbo soon. (begi s1) I was wondering, Will the intake manifold heatsoak and cause the AIT sensor to read higher than it should?

Thanks in Advance,
Wes

I wouldn't think so. The element would be more likely IMHO to pick up on the air temp inside the manifold than read the heat conducted into the sensor from the manifold.

If you do decide to do this let BEGI know so that they do not put a bung on the intake pipe for it.

The sensors heatsoak really bad in IC piping. They heatsoak worse in the intake manifold because it never cools off. Atleast when you're going down the road air rushes over your IC piping and it cools down.
The vibration from mounting it in the intake mani is also an issue. It has broken many sensors by dislodging the thermistor from the housing itself. If you want to do this, take the cage off the sensor and "pad" the sensor with silicone so it doesn't vibrate as much inside the cage. Do NOT get any on the end of the thermistor itself.

So it would be a better idea to put it on the IC piping after the IC? If so i can just have begi put one on there for me.

You have to have it in the piping after the IC anyway.

And yes, it does heatsoak a lot in the factory plastic piping but it is easily tuned out.

yeah, that seems like the best option, i will be calling tomorrow to order the s1 kit. YAY! anybody know about how long it takes them to ship it out?

shuiend 01-14-2008 09:27 AM

It tooke BEGI about 3-4 weeks to get me my customized S1. Part of that time was spent though waiting for them to get in parts to make part of my kit and also waiting for me to send them my turbo charger to clock and make sure it works wiht my kit.

Yeah, i ordered it today and corky said 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 weeks

it took them 5 weeks to ship mine. They first told me 2 weeks and after the 3rd week I had to call them every other day... Then they forgot to send the DP flange I bought separately and to finish up the DP go home 5 days after the turbo... and I also had to port the wastegate opening bc it was overboosting (Corky Bell didnt know why, I found the solution because the guys in this forum helped me). I also had to modify the heater hoses (made my own) because they touch the downpipe.

So good luck

That sucks, hopefully my experience isnt the same. So is everything running well now?

i need to move my AIT, i have it pre-turbo just because that was the easiest place to put it.

Yea, just need to figure out the MS. If you need help sometime let me know, I live close to Indianapolis. Not that I would be great help but I just installed the turbo two weeks ago

And if you need any welding, (tig and mig) my uncle has a Lincoln Tig welder and he is a certified welder and will probably do it for cheap. (Example, weld the IAT aluminum bung to the IC piping)
