Was: Anyone ever clean their COPs? Now: Help me fix me s***

I've been experiencing a bit of a hesitation lately that I was attributing to very old spark plugs. I took them out last night in preparation of replacing them today, and discovered a fair bit of corrosion on the top contacts of one or two of them.

Experience told me this corrosion and rust would be on the inside of the COPs as well. And it was. Anyone else have this?

It's very hard to photograph, my iphone wants to focus on anything except the dark hole at the bottom. These are all taken with the rubber boots at the bottom and the springs removed, and after I blew out quite a bit of rust dust and other junk in there.

Here's the 5/16" end mill I used to clean it up:

And here's the setup I used. My little mill vice wouldn't work since the whole setup wouldn't fit under the drill head by an inch or so, so I had to hit this vice around with a 5lb sledge here and there to line it all up. Wasn't too bad.

And here are the results:

I'm off to the hardware store for new plugs and hopefully so I can find some replacements for the conical springs inside the tips, mine look pretty sad.

I measured the depth before and after milling and I only took about .010-.015" out of each.

Everything ready to bolt back up once I'm back:

IIRC i read somewhere people recommending the use of dielectric grease to prevent this. I'm a TOTAL cop noob though, just getting on this bandwagon now finally.. Bought my cops/pigtails and I'm about to build a harness this weekend.

Yeah, I put some of that stuff on.

I bought some springs for $.69 each at ACE. The stock ones are conical, the wider part screwing in to the base of the COP and the narrower part touching the top of the spark plug. I bought straight ones cause I didn't have a coil with me to make sure the conical ones would fit, and used the dielectric grease to hold them in. We'll see how screwed I am next time I go to remove them.

Finally just replaced my rear race pads with street pads to get rid of some squeal, so I'm about to make a run out to the store to see if this "mod" rid me of my hesitation.

Nevermind, COPs wasn't causing my problem, although it's still a worth while "mod".

Now, help me solve my problem.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the AFR dip seen below:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351347077

It's right at 3300 RPMs and it's bugging the crap out of me. Spark angle is pretty steady there, between 19 and 20 degrees. TP stays at 100% as shown, and MAP stays steady at 156. Only thing that's dipping is the AFR.

Ideas?

Edit: log attached

its your shitty acceleration enrichments :)

im assuming your on mapDOT still, youre triggering during boost and you dump in WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much fuel for a split second. you're adding a bunch of fuel when the event is triggered, and I see a 10:1 AFR drop into the 9s.

curly 10-27-2012 10:21 AM

Isn't it done with accel enrichments by then? It's 4 seconds after I floored it.

*Warning, only on 1st cup of coffee.

Edit: re: my accel enrichments, I need to go back to the base map. I made a million changes and got no where.

Braineack 10-27-2012 11:42 AM

look at your log. at 227.044 sec you trigger accel enrichments.

WTF is causing it? MAPdot, TPSaccel, and GammaAE are not showing anything there.

curly 10-27-2012 12:24 PM

Didn't notice that before, thanks.

I see the light flash, but why?

xjdesertfox 10-27-2012 02:39 PM

Did you know you can delete the springs inside COPs and replace it with wire or copper rod for better spark?

Copper rod:

However, by the pictures im not quite sure how this could work with a toyota cop.

post your msq.
