Anyone running supermiata damper, 36-1 on 01+ head with MS3 ?

Going from NB1 with modified intake cam (2 nubs ground off) to 01+ NB2 engine. I would like to keep the damper for obvious reason.. Pulley are easy to find and you can just swap exhaust to intake pulley since they're the same. Grinding 01+ intake cam should do the same but those cams only fit 01+ heads are difficult to get or you have to buy a whole head.

So I don't care grinding it, but would like to know if someone already done it before breaking something...

I do have a spare head and another cam but would like to keep it OEM spec if hardcoding is happening one day.

The *nubs* more like flat bars (1 and 2 around 180*) at the far right of the picture.

This course of action would work but I do not recommend it at this time. Removing teeth from the VVT cam seriously reduces the available resolution for proper valve timing control. If it were a non-VVT app, I'd say go for it, because the cam sync is only used for cylinder phase detection. The resolution becomes more critical when you're swinging the cam around.

I've previously spoken with Emilio about writing a wheel decoder for his 36-1 wheel with NB cam sensor. He's supposed to be getting me some captures to make that happen at some point. I don't have a timeline at this time. It sounds like you may not be in a hurry, so I'd suggest waiting for this to be coded.

Good to know Ben, what kind of capture do you need ? Simply a log while cranking?

I could send you those next week... I'm not in a hurry will run stock damper with stock redline and still have fun.

Honestly, there is very little - if any at all - difference between the 36-X and the stock 4T.

I just removed my 36-2 from my car today and felt the same thing when I first installed the 36-2: nothing.

Just reinstall the stock 4T.

IIRC the stock 4T won't fit on the SuperMiata damper, hence Emilio sells his own trigger wheels with the damper. I don't have one though, there might be some way to hack it on there or I could be completely wrong.

No need to hack a 4-tooth on, you can just buy one for the SPM damper. There's also a 12+1 wheel for use with an AEM and stock NB sensors/cam wheel.

Yeah I know but changing it when the engine is out is easy, with rad and big front sway bar, ducting and more, not so easy. And being north of the border isn't helping either.

Anyway no more championship for me this year because too many troubles... Just some good time and enjoy this last track weekend before snow and working on 2015 setup...

MS3 already has code for 36-2T wheel and stock VVT cam signal. You can just cut an extra tooth off the 36-1T wheel to make it 36-2T.

No, he can't.

Explain?

The ignition mode is called "Miata 36-2". They added it relatively recently. This trigger wheel is this ->Flyin' Miata 1 800 FLY MX5s

Works with MS3 without grinding nubs off the camshaft.

If you open the MSQ from that thread you will see he is using that "Miata 36-2" mode.

The only difficulty is matching the 949 36-1 trigger wheel with Flyin Miata 36-2 wheel. If this is what you're referring to, then yeah, I guess he can't

The phasing on each is different and proprietary.

The MS3 does use the extra resolution from the 36 tooth wheel compared to the OE 4 tooth wheel. There's no down side, but OTOH I can't quantify if there's an upside, either. Theoretically the extra resolution will help the ECU make better decisions in transient conditions, so why not.

Either way, we'll get the code added for the SuperMiata 36-1 when we get the data files we need.

At least 2 logs while cranking, maybe more, and recording with the cam swinging from min to max. And then test experimental firmware to make sure the decoder works, and if it doesn't wash, rinse, repeat.

Time for a thread revival !

Any new outcome ? Will drop the vvt engine next week and wondering if the code is in the new MS3 firmware...

joyrider 04-16-2016 10:32 PM

Got the new 36-2 trigger wheel from 949racing, will it work with the new firmware ? I guess 949 used FM pattern... not sure yet

Ben 04-17-2016 06:43 AM

FM 36-2 was coded years ago.

Can confirm 949 36-2 works on ms3. Select Miata 36-2 and off you go.
